This list is part of the Subverting Convention MetaList - The description there reads:
Quote:
I decided to write an article really aimed at people who are not members of the hobby attempting to explain one of the reasons I find board games so interesting. For me, one of the most interesting parts of learning a new game is if that new design subverts my expectations in some way.

So the thought of this article is to use some of these tropes and show the interesting way in which some designer board games have subverted these tropes. Hopefully showing this gets people interested not only in these games, but in the gaming hobby in general because of the interesting things that can be done with the medium.

In convention 6, we are looking to explore games that redefine how typical I-go, you-go turn structure works.

Similar to above, but this game is competitive team vs team game that only stops play to resolve torpedo shots.

This is a one vs many game where the single player does not take turns but instead simply reacts to the other players. This creates some interesting dynamics.

Perhaps one of the most interesting twists on this is the role selection genre. In those games, a leading player chooses to do something, usually at a small benefit, while the other players can also do the same thing. Thus everyone is involved in almost every turn.

The order token system can create stacks of orders in systems where multiple players want to act. A player must activate an order from the top of a stack, so being buried in the order stacks may force players to pass and dramatically change the sequence of play.

The next player to move is the one who's boat is first in line in the area the sun moves into, meaning players can set themselves up for a number of consecutive moves, or repeat the same action multiple times, but at the cost of blocking themselves for a while.

Interesting, if weird, little game.

Players can knock opponents pieces out of worker placement spots, but in the process giving that opponent a mini-action, or even a whole action at a cost, following the active player's action.

Players draft a role card each round. These cards confer a special action, but equally importantly, they determine the sequence of play.

FWIW zillions of wargames have turn orders other than merely I-go-you-go. E.g. Chit-Pull System games use a mechanism of randomly pulling chits from a cup, where the chits determine not only which player acts next, but also which headquarters activates nearby units, or which area of the map is activated, or similar effects, so one effect of this is that players interleave turns in a randomly determined order.

A Real-Time coop where everyone is trying to treat patients and deal with emergencies that arise. During each round players talk about what the priorities are, roll all their dice once and place the dice that match. That phase lasts only 1 minute and after that there is a cleanup phase.

There isn't a first player or player order, but it does suggest that the most experienced player keep things on track and remind people of what we need to do. Strange that this game encourages quarterbacking in a coop(which I know is a huge complaint for many of all coops), but that's only in the planning phase. It ends up being you roll what you roll and you place what you can place. All your best laid plans may not work out.

Normally simultaneous play through-out, but with an ordering mechanism that can be invoked at any time by any player that cares about ordering of some particular event. The ordering mechanism is interesting, too.

Simultaneous play, effectively a race to solve a puzzle.

SET is similar, as are a number of other games.

Perhaps one of the earlier examples of simultaneous play around -- everyone negotiated, everyone submitted written orders, all orders are resolved simultaneously.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) would be a more modern implementation of this idea.

Similar to Tokaido, previously mentioned. Turn order depends on how far someone jumps ahead to select a particular tile.
