Welcome to Katastrophy's Print-and-Play (PnP) Showdown SoloCon where I finally play the PnP games that have been quite neglected in my collection.

Day One
Utopia Engine
Earthpost
Survival Tin
Melee in the Mines

Day Two
A Thousand Years of Blood
The Rooftops of Ludovia
Endless Nightmare
Court of Xiang Chi

Day Three
Barbarian Prince
The Dungeon of D

My 3-Day badge will get me into events spanning various PnP contest submissions over the past three years and some classic game redesigns I thoroughly enjoyed making.

Crafted this game in 2016-03-13 into a nice portfolio binder and now it is time to play.

How did it play?
This game is so well written, clear and concise, and great image references throughout that coincided with the great graphics of the detailed adventure sheets. I had no problem learning this game, able to reference action definitions, and calculating the necessary action results because it was a smooth, easy, concise game. Most importantly, a fun challenge in trying to figure out which action to take when, especially after obtaining the Constructs - do I activate it now for the benefit it will give me or do I get more components while on this free day action or... many decisions that are key to how the game will resolve.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
I would definitely recommend this game for anyone wanting a solitaire game that will challenge you but also make you want to try it again and again.

Crafted this game on 2015-05-30 and I have been avoiding because I am not much into science fiction themed games - but I made this so I will definitely play it!

How did it play?
Look before you craft... when I first grabbed this game it was a work-in-progress but was at a very good playtest format, so I thought. The rules were never fully flushed or finished and this left the game with what I would call stuttering - it does not flow well and the turn sequence became too long. Made an attempt at playing the game but even starting out there were some gaps in flow.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
I would not recommend this game until the developer reworks the rules, flow, and turn sequence. There was a strong focus on the story premise, worlds and civilizations, but still needs growth on game mechanics and writing.

Crafted this game on 2015-05-30 and it was the first game-in-a-tin that I ever made.

How did it play?
Took a couple of plays to get the hang of interpreting the die results and then knowing how to take those actions and use them for Solve 1 Problem. I was fortunate enough that my rolls were good for the first game when I fumbled about figuring the roll after the first roll resolution with the die results table. I made it out of the wilderness alive at the beginner (12) level but have yet to do so with the skilled or higher levels. There is a level of luck with the die that can make any session enjoyable or dissatisfying but I just had to keep telling myself it is all about lucky die results, not player skill.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
Yes, it is a quick game to have on hand for travel compatibility as well as a simple, clean mechanic that works great with zippy setup.

Crafted this game on 2016-10-09 from WIP draft format and hoping it plays well.

How did it play?
Liked how this game moved through rounds easy and fast once I got a grasp of turn sequence options/attacks. The diverse characters made this a flexible game where the luck aspect of die rolling did not adversely effect game outcome.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
I would definitely recommend this game to my peers and highly recommend card sleeves for their PnP builds to make card drafting and placement smoother. Fun, quick, and a little dramatic on the killing aspect.

Crafted this game on 2015-03-28 and I have been so bad in neglecting this one - must play!

How did it play?
I very much liked this game and how it provided a 2D way of thinking when it came to line of sight, engagement, and willingness to take a hit. The story premise was fun and interesting, gameplay was quick and clean. I did not find myself confused about any of the actions, either for setup or gameplay, therefore I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game because it was clear and concise.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
I highly recommend this game as the 'in your back pocket' and 'have a die rolling app' kind of game to tote around.

Crafted this game on 2014-11-15 and I have no excuse as to why I have yet to play this game especially since I went out of my way to make the game tiles with adhesive, etc.

How did it play?
Nice concept, appealing design, and mostly smooth play-through mechanics but... it lacked a little something to make it intriguing. It is a great game if you want to compete with other players - steal, push, or set-up for prison - but that can wear itself out as well when the other player is stuck in prison turn after turn because they cannot roll a 6. The mobility of the policemen gets limited when it is a 3-4 player setup but the premise is to move one of the policemen to hinder the next player after you vice adding challenges for your own turn actions.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
If a player wants something competitive and full of options to hinder other players then this is a good game for that kind of fun. It can be a quick play-through for all parties once a player figures out the best strategy for getting those Fame and Fortune points.

Crafted this game on 2015-04-12 and fascinated by the theme and graphics, looking forward to play it.

How did it play?
This game had a unique combination of mechanics that makes it tricky when trying to execute the right option given the fate of the die roll. I did the Basic mode for all gameplays and still found it difficult to balance things out to avoid the Shadow and Progress paths from crossing. The randomness of the Event and Action generation made it hard to even envision a strategy to make a poor outcome better but that is a facet of this game. It is that die-rolling mechanic of this game I do not like but also provides the suspense at each turn. Tricky, very tricky.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
I would recommend this game for those players who like the challenge of a good game-mechanic convolution as this one packs conflicting and supporting actions involved.

Crafted this game on 2015-05-31 with an initial WIP version and what is there to NOT like about the unique and amazing graphics and game mechanics that the superb Todd Sanders creates.

How did it play?
This game played well but it took me some time to get the rhythm on what to do with which card. I had to revert to the rules regularly because I just was not getting the symbolic representation on the cards to the action needed. If the rules had the card action symbols next to the definition then it would have been easier to assimilate. A lot is left up to the fate of the card draw as I had Daemon Princes hitting the Society Row within the first five cycles of cards and with no Generals to keep them at bay. I spent most of my time trying to get CP to get cards that would then defeat Daemons or get me more CP that I never built up any VP to advance my score beyond Commoner.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
This is the type of game where one has to play it about five or more times to really enjoy the mechanics and actions involved. The components can be misleading for some (simple deck and CP/VP tracking) and not be their cup of tea when it comes to balancing multiple factors. I would recommend for the complex thinkers at your gaming table.

How did it play?
This game is tough and it bit confusing. So a player has to use their POWER (HP) cards for combat and Test Checks then discards those cards - confusing because then a player who wins the combat/check is now minus HP of the Effort cards (plays two Effort cards then still loses, total minus 3 HP). Nowhere in the rules does it state the player replenishes the POWER (Effort) cards they use for combat so this makes it very tricky to survive the first few rooms if your POWER HP hand is not the right mix for what you are facing in the room or wandering monster. Rambling around the dungeon level was not an easy feat to do since I did not have the best hand to succeed in combat or checks.

Would I recommend this PnP game to others?
It is a tough game and if you are a player who does not mind constantly dying and having to restart your game then this challenge will test your resolve. It takes a lot of finesse in managing your traits, skills, and abilities to survive the situations you encounter with enough POWER (HP) cards to live through the next encounter. It is by far the toughest dungeon I have ever encountered but it tested my resolve to continue beyond the four times I attempted to get to the final level.
