* Regarding the number of this list... I looked back at how we've numbered our lists and, if the next list is #331, then we'll be back on track with where we should be. It's up to you George! We're counting on you!

Watch Out For Max!

We're collectively playing a game of Max and trying to safely get the bird, mouse and chipmunk to their home in a tree. This is a cooperative game and I'll set up my copy and take photos of the board after each turn to keep things moving.

The first geeklist item provides the rules of the game and how we will write instructions for a move. The remaining items will be used to discuss and make the moves. We'll make 5 moves per geeklist item. I've set up a bunch of geeklist items for making the moves and I'm unsure how long it'll go. To finish within the week (7 days), I expect we'll need to make around 7-8 moves per day.

Are you willing to be a "move-maker," where you are expected to make moves during the game? Respond to item #1 if you want to be a "move-maker" during the game. All of you are very much expected to encourage, tempt, tease, egg on, laugh at (in a nice way), push and otherwise coax and persuade others into what you think is the best move. I will try to make sure that I don't ask people to make moves when they are likely sleeping in their timezone and I will send a geekmail to you when it is your turn to make a move unless you tell me not to.

Like Round Up, this is another children's game from Family Pastimes. I rate Round Up a 7 and Max a 6, but I do think Max is their next best game (that I've played). While the spirit of our GCL is to "discuss" games, I like to try and get us participating in a different way (if I can). Hopefully, the banter will present plenty of "discussion" during the game. ninja And, I've added a few items at the end for in-game and post-game discussion of what happens during this game of Max.

What Is This?
If you haven't read the information in the header yet, I recommend doing that first.

Set Up:
I've set up the board with Max (the cat) at home and the bird and mouse and chipmunk on the tree stump; Max's 4 treats and the 2 dice are next to the board. Each die has 3 green sides and 3 black sides (green means move a wild animal of your choice one space; black means move Max one space). You decide the order in which they move.

Object:
We win if all 3 wild animals (bird, mouse, chipmunk) have been moved to the healthy tree at the end of the path. If Max catches any of the animals, then we lose... but we'll keep playing until all animals are safe or gone, trying to get the best result possible.

Rules of the Game:
Technically, you guys shouldn't be playing this because it is for ages 4 to 7, so you don't qualify. I'll make an exception just this once though.

On your turn, you either roll the two dice and move the wild animals and/or Max or you give Max one of his four treats to bring him home. Each die has 3 green sides and 3 black sides. After rolling the dice, for each green side showing, you must move the wild animal of your choice one space; for each black side showing, you must move Max one space. If you give a treat to Max, he is moved directly back home and does not interfere with anything on his way there... he just goes home.

Shortcuts - There are some shortcuts on the board. If Max is on any shortcut at the end of his movement, then he will take the shortcut. If any wild animal is on its matching shortcut at the end of their movement, then they will take the shortcut. In this way, it is possible for a wild animal or Max to skip a shortcut by move two spaces in one turn.

Max at the end of the path - If Max reaches the last space on the path, he cannot be called back home with a treat. Max just remains on the last space for the rest of the game.

Wild animals at the end of the path - If a wild animal moves one space past the end of the path, they are moved safely into the tree. If Max is on the last space of the path, a wild animal can still get past him if it is next to Max and moves two spaces in one turn.

Turns:
When it is your turn, choose one of these two actions...

(1) ROLL AND MOVE - Roll a D4 die roll
1 = Black, Black
2 = Green, Black
3 = Black, Green
4 = Green, Green
For each green, move a wild animal 1 space. For each black, move Max 1 space. You may choose the order they move.
To write this move, write "ROLL AND MOVE" and then add a D4 die roll to the geeklist item (check the first comment to this item below if you don't know how to do this). Next, post another comment indicating which animals are moving and in which order. For example, ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Chipmunk, Max. Or, ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 4 -- Mouse, Mouse

(2) TREAT - if at least one of the 4 treats is still remaining, identify which treat you'd like to give to Max and he will be moved back home.
To write this move, write the word "TREAT" followed by the treat you'd like to give him (Cheese, Milk, Plant, Cat Food). For example, TREAT - Milk.

I Want to be a "Move-Maker":
Reply to this item and tell me you want in and I'll add you to this list. You will get a geekmail message when it is your turn to make a move. If you don't make your move within about 4 or 5 hours then I'll move down the list from your name until someone makes a move. Here are the move-makers so far...

(1) qwertymartin
(2) Jugular
(3) lacxox
(4) hanibalicious
(5) chearns
(6) NateStraight
(7) drbobjack
(8) bnordeng

TAKE 2! It's only Monday. Let's try this again.

This space is reserved for moves #1 through #10 errrr, #15. A picture will be added after each move is made.

Move #1 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 4 -- Mouse, Mouse (lacxox)
The mouse scurries its way down a shortcut and has a good lead on Max already.

Move #2 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Max, Bird (hanibalicious)
Max makes his first move and the bird does too.

Move #3 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 4 -- Chipmunk, Chipmunk (chearns)
The chipmunk is going fast, getting all animals off the stump.

Move #4 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Chipmunk, Max (NateStraight)
The chipmunk keeps going; so does Max.

Move #5 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 4 -- Bird, Bird (drbobjack)
Bird's turn to fly.

Move #6 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Bird, Max (bnordeng)
One for the bird, one for Max.

Move #7 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 2 -- Chipmunk, Max (qwertymartin)
Slowly, but surely, Max is making progress.

Move #8 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Bird, Max (Jugular)
Do de-do-da-de-do da-do-de-da-do da-do-de-da-do....

Move #9 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Chipmunk, Max (lacxox)
(After a wee picture error), the chipmunk is now where he belongs and Max is on the stump.

Move #10 - TREAT - Plant (hanibalicious)
Apparently, Max was hungry enough to come home and munch on a plant.

Move #11 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 4 -- Mouse, Mouse (chearns)
The mouse scurries ahead.

Move #12 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 4 -- Chipmunk, Chipmunk (NateStraight)
It appears that Max has fallen asleep... the Chipmunk takes off.

Move #13 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 3 -- Max, Chipmunk (drbobjack)
Max finally wakes up and the Chipmunk takes the shortcut.

Move #14 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 1 -- Max, Max (bnordeng)
Max looks well rested now and is on the prowl again.

Move #15 - ROLL AND MOVE -- d4 = 2 -- Mouse, Max (qwertymartin)
Max and the Mouse continue.

I'll post some in-game discussion thoughts in the next few items...

(1) Have you ever heard of the game Max before? Ever played it? What is your impression of the game based on what you knew about it before or just from reading the rules in this list?

(2) The rule book introduces the game with this...

GENERAL IDEA: MAX is a cooperative game in which the players must get Little Creatures safely home before Max, the tomcat, catches them. In a simple, exciting way, children will learn logic, consultations and decision making. The game also raises an issue that adults may wish to discuss with their children during play. We don't like Max catching those Little Creatures, yet we recognize that he is a natural hunter. How do we resolve this in our minds and hearts? Children often have some very moving insights into this dilemma.

Do you think children will learn logic through this game in a simple, exciting way? Do "we" not like Max catching those little creatures? Are you able to resolve this in your mind and heart? I'd love to hear any moving insights into this dilemma that you have.

More questions during the game...

(4) Do you like dice-rolling games, where the way the game plays out can be massively impacted by what you roll? We've seen it happen in two games of Max where we roll a ton of black sides in one game and a ton of green sides in the next game. It has a significant impact on the game. Is that okay with you or something you prefer not to happen in your games?

I'll post some post-game discussion thoughts here and the next couple items...

While I believe that Round-Up is far and away Family Pastimes' best game, I do feel that Max isn't bad and it is better known by boardgamers. I've played Max 72 times, though the frequency with which I play it is dropping a lot faster than Round Up. If, one day, I get to 100 plays, I'll post a review.

(A) After move #47, what are the odds that we don't win the game? When you are playing a game in this type of situation, do you just stop playing or do you see it through to fruition to ensure it all works out as expected? It's not exactly the same, but are you the type of person who won't ever resign in chess or will you resign once you feel it's pretty clear it's over?

(C) If you were hanging out with your 4 year old daughter or 6 year old nephew or someone younger than 8 years old and you saw a copy of Max on the table... would you ask them to play and set it up? Or, would you not bother?

I'm taking advantage of the fact that it's my geeklist and adding another little discussion item here. I played Lost Cities with my younger brother recently (he's visiting from out west). Early in the game, I had an excellent hand in green and just had to figure out what to dump to get a green handshake before I started into my greens... but all I had were 10s. You can pretty much see what's on the table, except for the white 4 that I had played already. I had also discarded my green 2 to the board on the previous turn with the hope that I'd pick up something to play and, hopefully, get a green handshake and he wouldn't take my green 2. I picked up another 10 and was in this spot. It's your turn now...

What would you do?

Games night

Bemused manages the trick of reviewing itself in its own title. We were all quite puzzled by it but curious to play more. The setup is that the players are muses to virtuosi in various fields - the painter, the dancer, the poet and so on. You want to send your virtuoso's rivals insane or kill them, but you also secretly have some kind of relationship with one of them, so you might want to spare them. The play is reasonably simple - draw two cards, play one and discard - and the cards don't have special powers, they just let you add 'doubt' or 'dread' to a target virtuoso. If you receive enough doubt and become insane, your choices get randomised and if you die, you come back as a 'fantasma' and can still win by killing off the other players! It's pleasingly different from anything else I've played and very much a social game. Look forward to trying it again.

Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure was the main event. It's got some fun elements but still suffers from my usual problem with deckbuilders - downtime. There just isn't enough happening on other players' turns that concerns me so it feels like it can take an awful long time to come back round. I also feel that push-your-luck works better in repeated short bursts than just once over the length of a whole hour-plus game.

Spires was great with 4 players too (my previous games were with 3), with a guaranteed clash in the market every turn. So impressed by this - I upped my rating to 8.

Polterfass x2 continues to produce superb moments.

Lunchtime games

Marrakesh - first half of a new game went terribly for me - Joe was inside my head.

Jump Drive x2 - but I got revenge with two easy wins.

Games at home

Jump Drive x3 - all three narrow wins for Sarah.

Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game - Met up with someone looking for people to play games with in my neighbourhood. The request was specific, queer and/or women folk, which lead me to believe that this stranger might be someone I'd enjoy playing games with. MC and I met up with her at a local café and we played this. This is, although it's likely not saying much all things considered, the best Ascension style deck builder I've played. I think being a coöp makes the available card queue less of a problem as the games isn't arbitrarily rewarding some players while punishing others. We only played one game, mind, and got destroyed (although, one of our rules errors made then game harder than necessary). Curious to see what I think of it after another play.

Ghost Stories - Then we played this one and lost again. Badly. In our defence we pulled all the toughest ghosts early on (the black die ghosts, the steal a die ghosts, the can't use tokens ghosts). It was brutal. Also found out that I had been playing one of the ghosts abilities wrong for over seventy games now. Oops.

blush

Minotaur Lords - We played this nursing a hang over. It seems like the blue deck has an incredible advantage over the red deck. I mean, those horde cards, even erratad are really strong. I enjoyed this more than Blue Moon, mind. Even in that first game when you don't know the decks it still seems like you are doing something beyond playing beggar my neighbour.

Werewolf - It has been so long! You know, I always thought I would prefer The Resistance to this, and yet, I don't. This just captures McCarthyism so well. For the first time ever, the mob didn't lynch me. Yay me!

I'm the player who is loud and brash to get the atmosphere going in the right direction. I am almost always killed off for being an obvious werewolf.

Now I wish I had backed for those Werewolf coins.

_8_ Ticket to Ride: Europe - 4 Players
_8_ Can't Stop - 2 Players

(1) Glen More - This game seems to get a fairly mixed reaction, but I love it with 3 or 4 players... best with 4. I haven't played it enough for it to get old yet, but I imagine that will be a problem at some point since it's the same group of tiles every game. So far, I still really like to play this game.

(2) Tug of War - The name of this game may change, but I decided to start designing an 18 card micro game for a contest here on BGG. It's a 2 player game and end of each card has a point value with the other side providing a special ability. One card is randomly flipped face up between the players and another is discarded. Then, players alternate taking 4 turns each. On your turn, you draw the top 2 cards of the deck, discard 1 card and play the other card to the right side of any cards on the table in front of you. You decide which end of the card to put on your side and your opponent gets the benefit of the other side. After 8 total turns (4 each), the game is over and you score. It works pretty well, though I'm sure I have balancing to do with the cards. I'm pretty sure I will actually enter this game into the contest.

Still no time to go to or organize gaming clubs. As a result, I haven't seen so little gaming in a month (September) for three years (or, not counting the solo plays of C:CvC I recorded, for six years). Whatever, I am trying to survive these weeks somehow. On the positive side, we went to a lakeside with Miska's classmates, and as some of them have little sisters who go to the same class as Borcsa, the kids had fun and I could even relax a bit on Saturday.

On Sunday Borcsa woke me up in the morning - she wanted to play. So we did.
 7   Wiener Walzer
I won only by having one more sets of plates than her (and she missed only one plate for this).

 8   Onitama
It was a game we could not finish but I took photos so we will, soon. In this game only short-range cards were present which made it necessary to be more agressive/bold than usual, so when we stopped she already defeated two of my figures and I defeated one of hers.

 6.8   Carcassonne: Star Wars
 7   Carcassonne: Star Wars – Erweiterung 1
Our godson's family visited us on Sunday and the kids are really into Star Wars now while they love Carcassonne so they really, really wanted to play it 6 now) so we played 4-player, and I won, followed by Borcsa, then Miska and then our godson (who is another clever little guy but they certainly don't play board games as much as we do). Had I bet on the final order I would have become rich. It's quite interesting for a game with quite a lot of dice rolls but that's how it goes.

5   Timeline: Inventions NEW! - I didn't like this game as much two player as I had done previously with three. The rating could go up I suppose but it's intended as a mindless quick game that Kathryn and I can play as a way of getting into a gaming habit. She asked again last night so it may be working.

Sapiens NEW! - Meh, why? Annoying tile restrictions and annoying player targeting actions. Just annoying and uninspired.
9   Quantum - I started well but lost Momentum (literally) and so began the backslide. Love the game, angry with my own weak play.
 10   Go
9   Alchemidus - So good I've just paid through the nose for a copy. I know it's probably a personal taste thing but it's definitely my taste.

Viva Topo! - Sophie did get a little upset when mice were being eaten though not severely. Alice didn't really notice spending the whole time 'feeding' the cheese to mice.
N/A   Shut the Box x2 - Sophie has really taken to this game, and I guess I just have to grin and bear it. Terrible game but anything to encourage play with boardgames.
8   Ingenious - Sophie lost out by a small margin to me this time. She isn't making many decisions independently yet but she's improving in leaps and bounds.

A shortish game night:

Phoenicia 4p - Nicely compact as economic snowball games go, and the faster playtime means my group is willing to play it while Zavandor has become more difficult to get to the table there. But I still miss the tech trees, the asymmetrical start, and generally find Zavandor a better game.

Elysium 4p - This is such a bizarre game, a combination of the innovative and the tired, the elegant and the cumbersome. The different card decks add to replay nicely but make setup and teardown a bit cumbersome, and the set collecting is whatever. But the columns just strike me as an elegant and ingenious idea, and that underlying mechanic continues to impress me.

Innovation 4p/Teams - I'm not sure if this is just groupthink of the table, or an approved strategy universally, but our table seems to have fallen into the belief that it's good to have an offensive and a defensive player -- that one player if given a tool should do nothing but disrupt the opponents, leaving their teammate free reign to rack up the achievements.

*******

Also, I may be writing a book on Mahjong. Any of you play?
