Whistle Stop is a game about developing train routes and buying shares and...

WAIT! COME BACK! IT'S NOT THAT SORT OF GAME!

So, on the face of it, Whistle Stop has elements of the 18XX family of heavyweight train/stock games, but actually it's very different. Having said that, it's not a light game either, and it has some surprising twists.

The game is played over a number of rounds, and on your turn you can move your trains and/or buy upgrades. Moving your trains is done by spending coal or whistles. Coal lets you move from East to West, jumping over your own trains, into the next available stop to either collect resources, trade goods, or sell resources to gain train shares. Whistles are almost identical, except you can jump over other players' trains and you can move East. If your train reaches the edge of a tile, you can play additional tiles from your hand to keep moving your train to a new stop.

Upgrades give you additional special abilities and end-game VPs but they can be stolen by other players at a cost to them and a benefit to you.

When a train reaches the West coast, you can potentially score lots of VPs and then you remove your train from the game, putting it on a spot that gives you instant rewards (resources or tokens). Be warned though - the first player to get all their trains off the board will trigger the last round, regardless of how many rounds are left to play!

And this was Hugh's tactic in our game. He spotted a fast route to a West coast tile, and racked up a mighty lead after only a few rounds. Julian and I took a more leisurely route, collecting shares (for some not-insignificant majority-holder VPs) and grabbing VPs from Upgrades and other stuff.

In the end, Julian was able to get a train off the board on his last turn which racked up a healthy 25 VPs for the win.

This is a great game. It seems straightforward but has some surprisingly tough decisions, it races along and look - LOOK! - it's bloody gorgeous!

Final scores: Julian 87, Hugh 70, David 62

Well, I thought I'd managed to get my roof onto the ridiculously tall and slightly wavering tower, but someone must have breathed too heavily!

Again, not an unpublished prototype, but another RPG:

No idea if I've found the right image in RPGGeek, but hey they all look the same to me.
