Hi, and thanks for viewing my geeklist! Let's have a little fun. Grab the book that is physically closest to you right now, look up page 52, and add a geeklist item to this list. Begin your item by quoting the first complete sentence. Then tell us what book you have, and maybe some other info, or your thoughts on the sentence.

Have fun!

One entry per person, please.

If the rest of the book is like this, I may not read much of it.

Rulebook ends at page 48, I guess my ganmes are just too simple for BGG. However page 3 in the scenario booklet is Turning point at Guadalcanal. Both sides have to juggle getting a toehold, supplying their ground troops, pasting trenches, blocking reinforcements against sinking battleships or shooting down planes.

I play bball twice a week at lunchtime with a bunch of guys around my age (55) but my left knee's started to bother me lately, so I bought a compression sleeve knee brace on Amazon. This book's been on my Amazon wish list for some time, and I needed to get a little something extra to make the free shipping amount. Still kickin' A on the court, and now I've got something interesting to read on the train ride home from work.

"That was all."
From Best-Loved Short Stories.

Taken completely out of context, this leaves you with a lot of questions. "What is 'that'?" foremost among them.

In that vacuum of information then an empty untested, chaotic experience seems the most appropriate.

However, the story that this line is found in the middle of, is HG Wells' "The Man Who Could Work Miracles". Mr. Fotheringay has just wrought total destruction on the earth with his latest miracle, and the following line is, "These things Mr. Fotheringay did not, of course, fully appreciate."
shake

I have to say I was tempted to choose a game based on the subject of the story since the chosen sentence was so sparse,

The Princess Bride: Miracle Pill

but decorum won out.

The idea that we humans are not equipped to deal with very much responsibility or power seems well represented by "We Didn't Playtest this at all."
Of course, the idea that the being who does assume total responsiblity or power may not have "playtested" our current reality, rings true also.

In a search for something reflecting the subject of the story I found this,

which seems to reflect the ideas quite well.

'Als de Molukkers bij De Punt andermaal toeslaan is de landsvrouwe er even niet bij met haar aandacht - 'Lockheed, the greatest scandal in the house of Orange's history had intervened - en de ministers die hun kans schoon zien, leggen de mitrailleur er over.'

Closest book nearby was 'Als de dag van gisteren' ('Like only yesterday'), a collection of columns by Jan Blokker, written around 1980, inspired by recently published history books of the day. The book at hand here is William Hoffman - Queen Juliana [1979].

The book lay open at page 52, I kid you not.
I'm not superstitious, but considering what Niels Bohr said on that subject - I understand it brings you luck, whether you believe in it or not - I've taken this as a sign to give you a slice of Dutch society, then and now.

The sentence translates something like this:

When the Moluccans hit again [they hijacked a train] queen Juliana has her mind on other matters - her gold digger husband Bernhard took a bribe from Lockheed - which gave trigger happy ministers an opportunity to end matters in a violent way.

These Moluccans where the children of soldiers who fought on the Dutch side in the Indonesian war of independence. Promises were made, and not kept, by the Dutch government. In the late 70s there was a small terrorist spree by these disenfranchised youths. These days, more in line with Real Politik I guess, their testosterone finds its way to a Hells Angels-style motor gang, Satudarah.

I got the book for free. In our city (Groningen) there are several 'give away-stores', places where you can leave stuff you don't longer want, or take stuff you do want. Recently a supermarket near by got in on the action. Free coffee, free books, does it get any better? I could even play boardgames with the local bums, since they set up a table.

The author, Jan Blokker, was considered an opinion leading columnist. I never understood why, and this book hasn't changed that. I think I'll return the book, and get my money back.

I've hit the middle of a sentence, in the middle of a paragraph, and am not sure what to write, so I'll list multiple sentences.
Edit: I forgot that you did specify the first complete sentence. I left the other quotes hehind spoilers rather than remove them entirely.

The sentence that begins the paragraph at the bottom of page 51, that continues to page 52:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
"This is the last time for you old bird!" he exclaimed furiously.

The following sentence in the paragraph, which is the one that actually crosses from one page to the other:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
"When a gen'l'man wants tuh take a drink here, by God he shall, without you interferin'."

The first sentence entirely on page 52: "Now get th' hell outa here before I kick hell outa ya."

The first whole paragraph of page 52:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
But Sheelan had reckoned without scientific knowledge of abnormal psychology and the effects of nervous stimulus. Old Bugs, obtaining a firmer hold on his mop, began to wield it like the javelin of a Macedonian hoplite, and soon cleared a considerable space around himself, meanwhile shouting various disconnected bits of quotation, among which was prominently repeated, "...the sons of Belial, blown with insolence and wine."

The four quotes are from the "Old Bugs" short story in H.P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction. The foreward for "Old Bugs" says:
AN EXTEMPORANEOUS SOB STORY
BY MARCUS LOLLIUS, PROCOUNSUL OF GAUL

This delightful comic tale was written specifically for Lovecraft's young friend Alfred Galpin, probably in the summer or early fall of 1919, as Galpin had expressed the desire to experience alchohol before Prohibition went into effect (July 4, 1919). Several character names are taken from Galpin's acquaintences, including Eleanor Wing, a schoolmate at the Appleton (Wis.) High School. Galpin notes that at the end of the story, Lovecraft has added the following note: "Now will you be good?!" It was first published in The Shattered Room and Other Pieces (1959).

Apologies for getting a little RSP, but it is pertinent to the quote... I've spent the last 34 years questioning the existence of divinity and trying to find any evidence to back up the religion (CofE) I was raised up in, as well as the myriad other religions on this planet. I know it's heavy, but it's a profoundly important question that I believe everyone should revisit regularly.

"Eventually this practice was discontinued as it became clear that there was no life on the Moon."

From the Leaving Earth rulebook. Probably the most interesting rulebook I've ever read. Planning to try out the game for the first time tomorrow.

The whole section reads:
Quote:
Moon
Before the first probes reached the surface of the Moon, no one knew exactly what to expect. One theory was that the Moon was covered in deep oceans of a fine, powdery dust. This was disproved by sending probes, such as Ranger 7, which impacted the Moon at high speed in 1964. Analysis of the crater left by the impact, along with radar measurements and photographs beforehand, showed that the dust layer was no more than twelve inches thick (about thirty centimeters).
Scientists have long speculated about the possiblity of life on the Moon. By the 1950s, we already knew that the Moon was dry and airless. Any life that might be found there would have to be microbial, tolerant of the most extreme conditions. When the first men to walk on the Moon returned to Earth, they were kept quarantined for three weeks to prevent the possible spread of any lunar micro-organisms. Eventually this practice was discontinued as it became clear that there was no life on the Moon.

I'm reading Vengeance by George Jonas, which is about the Mossad response to the murder of eleven Israeli Olympic athletes in 1972. It's a gripping read that offers a small glimpse into the complex and protracted Israeli/Palestinian conflict. I am woefully underinformed about the historical context between these people groups, so this might lead to further reading for me.

"Doors - In this cute little game, there are four doors in succession and you must open them to get the prize behind the last one."

The start of a description of a very simple computer game written in... BASIC. From the book "More BASIC Computer Games", copyright 1979.

Yes, I programmed in BASIC when I was a kid. Yes, I'm that old. And yes, I still have a couple of books about programming in BASIC. blush
