Welcome!

I've decided to create two separate lists for my top solo games. This one is for Print-n-Play games.

The sister list for non-PnP games is HERE.

I was having a hard time trying to compare published games with all the polish they go through with the raw goodness that PnP games offer.

This list is an ongoing work in progress. Comments are welcome!

Agent Decker is a deck building game where you are a secret agent trying to rescue an ally from an enemy base. You have two ways to acquire new cards, fighting and stealth. There is a card row and as cards fall off the end, the enemy becomes more suspicious that something is going on. Wait too long to complete your mission and the base goes into high alert and you lose.

The theme is great, the game play is great, the difficulty is great. You have to complete 5 missions to succeed, and any changes you make to your deck carry over from each mission to the next. It has a similar feel to Friday, but with some unique game play of its own. I hope this game eventually gets published. With more cards and more missions I think it could be as good as Friday, maybe better.

In Utopia Engine, you play as the last hope of a dying world. You are an artificer, and you've been tasked with assembling and activating the ancient and powerful Utopia Engine, which legend says will prevent Doomsday forever. It's not easy though; you travel to different regions in the land searching for the six pieces of the engine, as well as the components necessary to connect and power them. Along the way you can be attacked by vicious monsters, and you only have so much health and limited weapons to defend yourself with. Oh, and each turn brings you one step closer to Doomsday too.

The game plays as a roll and write dice game. The main mechanic is to roll 2 dice at a time and write the values into the digits of two 3-4 digit numbers. Once you have the numbers, you subtract one from the other and the result determines what you find - lower the better. It makes for some interesting tactics, with strategy consisting of choosing what region to travel to next, and what order to assemble the engine in. If you survive to the end and don't hit doomsday it all comes down to one final roll to see if the engine works. It's a nail-biting climax.

This game really makes me feel like I'm stuck in a post apocalyptic world and I am humanity's only hope for survival. It does this with just two sheets of paper, a pencil and a pair of dice. Amazing.

Picture yourself in bed at home asleep and having a pleasant dream... Suddenly that dream morphs into something ... unpleasant. A nightmare. Still, it's only a dream, right? Once its run its course, you'll wake up, right? Right?

In Endless Nightmare, you are having a series of horrible nightmares. Each time one ends, the next one begins. Eventually, your little mind will simply snap! The object of the game is to survive as long as possible. Each turn you choose an action, such as increasing one of your skills or progressing through the current nightmare. However, you are constantly being chased by this evil entity called The Shadow. When it catches up to you, you lose and score points for each nightmare you progressed through.

This is a great push your luck game. During each nightmare the rules change, keeping things interesting. It's really fun trying to beat your personal best score. So far my best is 54. How about you?

Snooker Solitaire is a simulation of snooker, using cards and dice. You play in a single elimination tournament, with a random opponent each round controlled by a simple AI. The cards are dealt into a 4x5 grid representing the table with 10 red balls, the 6 coloured balls and the cue ball.

You use dice to determine the results of your shots. You also have a limited amount of power and chalk you can use to make shots easier. When you make a shot you switch the positions of the cue ball and object ball (and flip over the object ball card if it was red) and then shoot again from there. It's possible to plan out your moves for several turns, which feels a lot like the real game.

I love the way this game really feels like snooker, which I've played many times. It's fun trying to set up several shots in a row, and the game has rules for fouls, snookers, and "english". Each opponent gets tougher as you win more matches. You basically have to run the table to win against your final opponent, and so far I haven't been able to beat him, but I keep trying.

Beast Hunter is a sequel to Utopia Engine, and it uses the same main mechanic of rolling dice, filling up the digits of two numbers, and subtracting one from the other to get a result. It's a great mechanic, and this game goes to show that it's flexible enough to hang more than one game system from.

In this game you are trying to defend a village from monster attacks. You can spend your turn hunting, gathering supplies, forging weapons, or building up the village's defenses. To win you need to defeat each of the three great beasts threatening the city before it is destroyed by attacks.

I like this one a lot, but it's not quite as innovative as the first. The story is great, but not quite as epic. I like the new directions the designer took the game mechanics in, and like its predecessor each game is an exciting story in its own right.

Still just needs 2 sheets to write on, a pencil, an eraser and 2 dice!

When I first saw this game I didn't think much of it. The theme was different, but not something that really appealed to me. Also, how good could it be with just 11 cards? Still, it was just 11 cards to print and cut out (plus 2 more to track turns), so I thought what the heck, it won't cost much time or money to create.

Wow, was I surprised how fun and addictive it was. It's a puzzle game. Each of the 11 numbered cards represents something you have to place on the tea trolley (card #1). You have to place them in order from 2 to 11, and you only have 15 minutes, or turns, to do so. At the start of the game you shuffle and deal the cards onto the table in a single row. Each turn you can either place the left-most card on the trolley (if it's the next number in sequence) or manipulate the row with one of the card abilities. Cards can be reordered, turned face down, or placed in a "holding area" for future use, among other things. If all the cards in the row are face down, you can shuffle them up and deal them out again. Get them all on the trolley before time runs out and you win. It's also fun keeping track of your best times.

If you like puzzle games, and your looking for something fast and addictive, but you're not sure about creating your own game, this is a great place to start. It's such a good game that it was released commercially with Bowling Solitaire, so if you can find it on a game shelf, I would recommend getting it. Bowling Solitaire is pretty good too.

This is a roll-and-write game based on the modern decathlon. Each event involves rolling up to 8 dice and manipulating the results in different ways to get a score. At the end you add up all the event scores to get your final score. It's fun trying to beat your personal records - not only for the whole game, but also for each event. There's even an unofficial world records thread on the game page on BGG, though I would say most of the records are pretty much out of reach now.

This game surprised me in how each event is different, yet somehow feels like the actual event being simulated. For example, all the running events (100m, 400m & 1500m) use the same basic mechanic, but with different amounts of dice. The 100m feels like a sprint, while the 1500m feels like a long distance race. I really like that. Mr. Knizia designed a great game.

In Night Terrors you are a small child, it's bedtime, and the monsters are coming! Not just any monsters either: ALL the monsters are coming. You can't run. You can't hide. You can't even call for mommy because no one is coming to save you. You'll have to save yourself. Fortunately you have a small arsenal of weapons to choose from in this epic battle for body, mind and soul!

This is a dice placement game. The play area is up to three rows and five columns of monster cards. If any monsters are present in the bottom row at the end of the round, they do damage to either your health, mind or spirit. If any of these is reduced to zero you lose. If you survive, the bottom row is discarded, each row moves down, and a new row of monsters is dealt at the top.

Each monster has a number on it. On your turn you select one of 9(?) different weapons and activate it. Each weapon has unique abilities and lets you roll some dice (usually 4). Dice can be placed on monsters and if the dice total on a monster is equal to its number then that monster is discarded. To win you must discard all the monsters without allowing any of your attributes fall to zero.

I like how the weapons are all different and they each have limited ammo. Especially in higher difficulties you have to plan carefully to not waste ammo in the wrong situation. It's a fun and challenging game with a cool theme.

Overthrome is a patience game. It's played with a standard deck of 52 cards plus one joker. The cards represent different royal families (suits) vying for the throne. Picture cards are royalty.

You have a hand of six cards. On your turn you can play a card matching the suit of the current controller of the throne, which must be a royalty card. You then draw a card to replace the one you played. Your goal is to play all the cards in the deck. Queens and Kings give you some extra ways to play cards from your hand, and Aces and the joker have their own rules to help you and can be played at any time.

As far as patience games go, it's not bad. I like the way the theme is incorporated into the game play, and decisions have to be made on how best to play out the cards in your hand and how to get a new royalty card on the throne when needed. I think a lot of people will really like this game if they like other patience games.
