Amyandpeteb created the original "Up and Comers" monthly geeklist but unfortunately had to stop updating it in March 2016. This was one of my favorite monthly geeklists, so I want to try to bring it back!
On the first of every month, I pull in data on every game on BGG into a MySQL database. Some of the data I pull includes the number of owners, weight, and rank. You can read more about how I do this and what is in the database here (note: the schema there isn't completely up to date).
What is an "Up and Comer"?
An "up and comer" is a game that has a drastic change in ownership over the last month, which could indicate that it is becoming pretty popular.
How are these values calculated?
For every game on BGG, I calculate the difference in ownership over the last month and divide by the ownership of the previous month. In other words:
Hotness ratio = (This Month's Ownership - Last Month's Ownership) / Last Month's Ownership
I only include games that had at least 50 games last month and I exclude expansions.
