Why did Dracula become a bank? To deal with suckers every day!

Kupferkessel Co. is a game that was new to us in October. Old timer and Game Cabinet publisher Mike Siggins (sumo) describes the game as having a "look ahead" mechanism, but when I searched for other games with something similar, I discovered "look ahead" is not in BGG's vocabulary.

The look ahead in Kupferkessel, Co. that sumo mentioned means that players choose cards on which numbers are printed. These numbers determine how far players move around the perimeter of the game on their next turns. This choice of numbers allows players to plan their future moves more or less.

First, how can we define "look ahead"?
Second, what are some games have it?
And finally, does this mechanism appeal to you? Why?

Lookout Games arguably has a good track record for publishing noteworthy games.

Tell us about any Lookout titles that you are looking forward to trying (Nusfjord, Riverboat, etc)? Or perhaps tell us about a Lookout-published game that you enjoy.

What was the most recent question (or one that you recall) that your children asked which in turn required you to look up the answer?

Alternative question--what topic related to parenthood or parenting have you researched?

Look out below!

One of the podcasts I listen to, The Dinner Party Download, is ending its run after six years. One of the things that the hosts have done with their guests is ask them two questions:

1. Tell us a question you never want to be asked at dinner parties.
2. Tell us something we don't know. This can be about yourself or some piece of trivia about the world.

So go ahead; drop some knowledge on us.

All of the games this week were with one or more of the kids!

I’ll give the top spot to Finn Billiards this week. It is tabletop Molkky more or less. My rating is likely to go up, but before that happens, the kids will need to learn how not to shoot the disk like a bolt from a crossbow. There will be blood if they break a window.

Lines of Action is one of my top 10 new-to-me games from this year, and it’s definitely the best game from the year I was born. I think many people mistakenly think the opening is wide open, but there are moves that immediately begin to limit what you opponent can do. There are plenty of opportunities to play offensively or defensively, and the tension increases noticeably with each move.

Finally, I’ll note that Res Publica is fun with four but terrific with three. N and I introduced this to our eldest, who proceeded to trounce N and give me some healthy competition for first place. Love the constrained negotiation and weirdo Knizia scoring.

Not much gaming this past month, but this last week was busy, thanks to two local game days that we were able to get out to.

G-o-t-w goes to an old beginner-level wargame. I'm ever-so-slightly being drawn back into wargaming (that and sports games were where it all started for me when I was a kid). I've piddled around with getting ASL back out a month or so ago. I'm piddling around with getting Up Front to the table. But Gettysburg got actual plays this past week, as my middle son and I are giving it a go. Well...we will see.

I had one of my gaming weekends, so lots of gaming. Sadly we lost our fourth on the Sunday to the snow, as the route to us is mostly country roads that aren't gritted, but instead we took the kids tobogganing down one of the local hills for an hour or so.

Codenames Duet was the most played game, as my gaming friend and I played it late night after the others had gone to bed, trying to get further in our mission. We did fairly well on Saturday night, completing two more legs, but then it didn't go so well on Sunday!

Pulsar 2849 was the new game of the weekend, which my friend brought along. There is a lot going on in the game, but as time went on it started to make sense, and the second play we added in the player boards, just for more confusion! I also finally got to try Monkeys in the Moon, and was pleasantly surprised, although my husband hated it!

Most of the gaming was with adults, but my older son took the opportunity to ask if they'd play a game of RoboRally with him (as his siblings don't like it, he has to wait for other adults to appear to play it with him!).

Gaming with other adults:

Pretty good variety in gaming last week, including a few new to me games, which is great.

8   Yogi x2 - Quick "while we're waiting" plays in a couple of different groups.
7   This Town Ain't Big Enough for the 2-4 of Us x2 - I should probably upgrade my rating here, this is a really good filler that I should get to the table more often.
7   Terraforming Mars - Game of the week as it's a bit of a milestone that I've finally got to play it. I like it, but I'm not exactly overwhelmed; maybe another play or two might reveal why so many other people are frothing so much.
8   Herbaceous - I've found the member of our lunchtime group who doesn't like this, but the rest of us really like it.
7   They Who Were 8 - A first play, and an interesting bit of abstract stone manipulation; I can see this being a good game to just play repeatedly for an evening over some booze.
7   Libertalia - Not played this for a while, and always has a few big moments.
7   Dixit - At a friend's suggestion we played this with "a Xmas twist", where every clue has to link to Xmas; it was fun, but the game loses something with that sort of restriction.
N/A   Niña & Pinta - Just played solo, which is a little fiddly, but enjoyable and a good way to get my head around the game; looking forward to playing this with other people.
7   BraveRats x3 - Coffee shop classic with Miss B!
N/A   Catacombs & Castles - A first play with Miss B, this works well as a head to head battle, with a few rules simplified from elder sibling Catacombs, though the different shot types can be a bit fiddly.

--
What Martin sees in love letter and Jump Drive, Megan sees in Too Many Cindarellas. Also, baby holding works with it. I'll still play it with her any day, and I'm starting to have fun with predictive play.

Brutal Kingdom 3p ww x.5

I stab, you stab, we all stab for power.
Bleeding heads of state contained in just a half an hour
--
While we didn't finish due to a teething baby, the two rounds I played reminded me of how much I love this lovely little game. It's got lots of murdering, but also an interesting scoring mechanic, reminiscent of longhorn- the score in influence, at the end of the game, is equal to what's left in the pool. So not just ameritrashy brutal murderizing, but some real fine euro dickery too. So far as I can tell, it gets much, much better with repeated play.

London (2nd) editions 2p x.5

Bootstraps for sale!
Bootstraps for sale!
weathered and leathery bootstraps for sale!
pull yourself up
or go find a cup
and drown your poor ass in a brewery ale
--
Holy crap this version is pretty, and so far as I can tell, far more brutal. I am loving it a whole heck of a lot. Perhaps not enough to bump old London, but perhaps so. The powers latched to the boroughs are a lot of fun though, and add a really intriguing layer of choices.

Istanbul: DW 3p x1

I'll pray the minimum count, he said
or act real piously instead
but to his right
dude prayed all night

--
RJ made a run on mosque tiles, and just ended up creaming us. We all had one good roll, but due to his crystal economy, his many terrible rolls soon became good ones. This was also played by passing a baby between dads- c'est magnifique!

Calimala 4p x1

I'm getting too old for this-No stop!
how dare you try to make that pun
but-
no-
I-
no-
was gonna say ship
I know, be shamed with what you've done.
--
Game of the evening. I thought it was going to be a medium weight longish euro. No way, man, that thing sang. It was so fast and streamlined- and what would be normally really kinda standard fare area control turned into quick heated contests due to the sheer speed. A lot of areas went uncontested due to poor planning and fast stack scoring, which is totally unlike most other area-control scoring euros. I loved it. It had that early euro sheen to it, where, you know, there was a lot of heart- rough edges, sure, but the main bit remained unsullied and pure.

Voodoo Prince 5p x.5

For all my sins, I've now atoned
by getting thoroughly gumbo-ned
--
Only reason it's not a full game is that it was played as a quick filler between food prep and eating. It will definitely make a return. There's real clever brinkmanship, and definitely mean play. The funneled trick play is also very clever, and unlike the smoothed out trump, tricks, game, it's a lot wackier in result. Indeed, I went out first as I played what I thought would be a safe 0. Megan played the suit 15, which meant that my zero took it, in an ouroboran twist. Is that just a Mobius? Whatever, she boned me- and then she was last out due to someone having the same suit left over, impossibly.

Expedition NW Passage 4p x1

If Ice is nice
well, then this ice
has made it twice
or even thrice
the reasonable asking price
oh jesus chrise
--
It's not E:NW Passage unless someone screws up, and Sonja stranded her sled on an island with all of her men. We offered to let her keep ONE person on the ship as a sort of whoopsie, but in the German spirit of hilf dir selbst so hilft dir gott, she refused, reaping what she sowed. There was a wonderful moment where another player zipped by her sled, waving jauntily as he left her men to freeze in the arctic. I got 1st and 2nd in the race, but our resident cartographer took it, due to there being so many ties (Only one category scored!!).

Vampire Queen 6p x.5

See my fangs? See my mask?
See my castle and my class?
Now look me in the face and ask
I dare you
ok-
who's the ass?
--
A retheme of Who's the Ass, part of Kramer's "let's see what I can do with two decks of cards" series. Love it. Love that it breaks the trope of common climbing games in that there's no safe play as long as the ass/vampire hunters are ready to dump on someone's hand. I'm glad it got reprinted, and I even enjoy the new art better. But "who's the hunter" doesn't have quite the same ring as "ok, now who's the ass?"

Fuji Flush 6p x1

Collude with me and him and her
so we can make that guy unsure
'cause even though he's got high cards,
together give him death by shards
--
Not bad. Not great, but a neat little topper to the evening. Can't decide if it's worth it, but I think I accidentally already threw away the box, so, there it is.

I didn't play it, but I taught Bali for four, and meh. It was so much less interesting than with two. There's no scaling, so really, everyone just got half the amount of actions (or less), and I realized that I have far better 4p card games- and far far better 2p card games. So heave ho, despite my initial enthusiasm. I'll pass it on, as it's not a bad game by any means.

Beer Report

Victory At Sea x1
Ooops. Picked it up instead of the calm before the storm due to the fact that they've got sequential labels. Turns out, I actually like the cream ale better, although all of my past experience says I shoulda been a fan of the darker beer (that's not to say this wasn't rich and delicious. It was). Nope. The coffee in the cream ale isn't as bitter, and the vanilla shines a bit more in the ale. Well blow me down.

Was I bloviating or did I actually like this better? Two drinks in I can safely say, this is my favourite ballast point. I mean I like Grapefruit Sculpin, but that's my favourite IPA, and I just don't really like IPAs.

I always split this with my father in law, as it's one of the few beers we can agree on. It's got quite a saucy tang for what should be a fairly plain dark ale. I don't know why, but I love sipping it daintily, like some sort of old biddy. Sip sip.
