Welcome to the Long Division GCL!

Episode 40!

We are all in a spectrum of opinions, interests, preferences, tastes, colors, etc... If you take a trait and survey a population, you will most of the time have a nice normal curve on the distribution of the data: Normality with its outliers

While for many aspects, we want to be "normal" (which is always subjective), we sometimes take pride on being "different" than the rest.. In the end, commonality as a human being, and all of these things than make each of us unique, always has been a fascinating thing for me, which may explain why I became a biologist. Let see what is your relationship with... the "Norm"!

(If you would like to follow along, feel free! If you lurk and feel that you have some valuable input, consider posting it as long as it is polite to the discussion group and its members.)

What are your personality traits that make you feel like " I'm just like everyone else"

You like chocolate?, Your hate arsenic-loaded cakes? well I hate to break it to you, but you're just like everyone else.

Among these traits, which ones you enjoy being part of the norm, which ones you hate not being an outlier!

What about you makes you an outlier?

These things that you are really good at, while most people can't do much about it? Or these things that everyone do, but you just can't...

Again, what are these things that you love or hate about being "different"

So, being normal is extremely subjective. it depends on the place, the culture, the geography, the context, and the era etc...

This imply a strong societal aspect and impact our life style. If you eat a pulled-pork sandwich in Alabama, well you are within the local norms. If you do this in ISIS-occupied land, you would clearly be an outlier (and potentially dead)

Norms change across places, and across time. 50 years ago (exactly... good'ol 1967!), my brother would not have been able to marry his wife, because of the local "norm" at the time.

In your own culture, which are the things that used to be different in term of social acceptance, but the norms have changed, for the better (or the worse?)

PS: If we start killing each others by the end of this thread, I will remove this item. No, just kidding. I'll grab the popcorn.

So this one is different. About your game tastes? How do they compare to your fellow Long Division GCLers?

Create a poll that list your 10 favorite games of all time, with the following columns.
"I love it"
"I would play"
"I am not fond of this one"
"I hate it"
"I don't know it/never played it, but I want to try it"
"I don't know it/never played it, and I don't care about it"

Over time, I would be curious what are the game among us that really stands out, and which ones, you are really the only one to like....

PS: no judging laugh might

Bugs in the comments, I ll copy the poll items here

I didn't see a question for "what've you been playing", which is largely okay, because I haven't really been playing.

Games played Oct 5 through 19

N/A   Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization NEW!
 7.0   Timeline: Discoveries
 7.5   Dungeon Lords
 7.5   Codenames
 6.5   Senet
 N/A   1830: Railways & Robber Barons NEW!

My plays of TtA were on the app, but one was pass-and-play with my father, the other asynchronous with a local gaming buddy. I count those two, but not the bot plays.
The game is ... great, and I don't really like it. I don't feel like I have enough control or green-field choices.
I feel like I've ranted about this before, so I'll forebear. If I haven't, we can discuss further.

I played 3/4 of a game of 1830 (my first XX) which Rebecca (CoffeeRunner) was kind enough to teach. It was a 5 player game with 4 of us learning. There certainly is a lot of game there, and I enjoyed playing it. Clearly, I didn't have a detailed enough understanding of the game to manipulate it the way I want, but it does seem like that possibility is there. The long-term ramifications and consequences of actions are delightful to consider, but need more plays before I can think I can suss them out.
I would gladly play tons more, but I think my opportunities are limited. Or, worse, I have lots of opportunities (thanks to Rebecca's generosity), but competing (and prevailing) priorities, which mean that I will remain a train gamer in utero until my time commitments rearrange a bit. I'm sure I'll snag a game here and there when I can, though.

Dungeon Lords was against my father (King of AP, it turns out) and 8 yo son (super fast player). Despite playing twice as fast as I did, Ryan was still competitive in the final scoring. I had to help him a bit with the battles, but all the worker placement and resource acquisition stuff he did on his own. He defaulted hard on taxes the first year, which I think might have been the difference between him and my father. I was only a few points ahead in the final tally, despite my dad thinking he was going to get obliterated by the second-year Paladin. It was his first time playing, and his deep, thorough thinking skills wanted him to spend lots of time on each question, even when some of them were not real questions. The result was the game took probably 4 hours split over 2 days and Ryan was mentally checked out well before Dad figured out whom to fire in Fall the second year. Dinner happened, we came back and finished defending our dungeons, and I was awarded a dungeon construction permit from the bureau. Woot!
