I just got a semi-threatening message on Facebook from the Global Sales Manager (Aaron DeMark) at Breaking Games- Ad Magic, for the review of the game 'King's Abbey' I left on Amazon. Thoroughly disturbing and unsettling that someone actually took the time to search, stalk and find me on Facebook to leave an unsettling message.

Starting this geeklist to see how many of you experienced a similar(ish) situation where you got threatened, hounded, stalked, bothered or trolled for leaving an honest opinion.

I will start with the first one.

This is the semi-threatening facebook message I got from the Global Sales Manager (Aaron DeMark) at Breaking Games- Ad Magic for the review I left on Amazon---

"Thanks for the review, but jesus f***ing christ man you are not invisible...just sayin!!".

Thoroughly unsettling that someone took time to search, stalk and find me on Facebook to leave this message....and that too their Global Sales Manager!!

Extremely disappointing!!

Update- I emailed both Breaking Games and Amazon regarding this message. While the reply from Breaking Games was apologetic, Amazons Sales team response was far more intense. Apparently, contacting a customer regarding their feedback or review its a strict no no and can result in the suspension of a sellers Amazon account. They contacted me for the message I received and I forwarded them the screenshot. They are looking into it now.

Just wondering... how exactly is this a "Geeklist".

Also, thanks for the memories. I'm reminded of an amusing (and clueless) Amazon 1-star review of Caylus

Amazon user wrote:

This game gave my family a real crack up just because of how ridiculous it is to learn how to play. We actually thought the whole thing was a big hoax because after several hours of reading directions, we just kept getting more and more confused. I am getting my PhD in biomechanical engineering, and this game was seriously way too much. We literally could not stop laughing about the complexity of the players (the provost is corruptible? I mean..come on!), and all of the stupid little boxes and tiles are just way too much. There are also these equations that come on the "simple" directions, which would still be too complex for all the rocket scientists that I know. The equations really set us over the edge. The next piece of paper we expected to find in the box was something that said: "HAHAHA you idiots, this whole game is just one big prank! You just wasted 3 hours of your life on something with no possible solution! HAHAHHAHAHHA HAHAHAHAH muAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!" This was really entertaining, but not for any thing that had to do with how awesome the game was.

I once gave a game an honest rating. No scathing comment or anything, it just wasn't my thing. A short while later, I noticed that the somewhat popular and famous designer of this game gave one of the games I've designed the exact same low rating. The kicker? My game was 6 months from release at the time, and I know he wasn't a playtester.

So he must have seen the low rating I gave his game, looked at games I'd designed, and gave one of them the same low rating out of spite. The fact that it occurred so closely to the time that I gave my honest rating of his game and many months before my own was released pretty much proves it.

I love our industry and community. 95% of the folks are awesome, stand-up people. But every bushel has a few bad apples, and, unfortunately, we too have our share of pettiness.

And no, I will not call them out by name. I don't care enough to smear them like that, it's just one rating out of many, and I also don't like the precedence it sets for designers calling out other designers for their ratings, even if it is less-than-honest. But if I ever happen to interact with this person at a convention, you bet I'll inquire about their rating and how they arrived to it. I'm certainly curious as to what their response would be.

I wouldn't call it threatening, but I did have a designer contact me once after I left a pretty negative review, and he tried to convince me to change it.

The whole story can be found here, in a thread that was eventually locked after some back and forth. I wouldn't touch anything this guy makes ever again.

A poor game, and a poorly behaved designer

This seems fitting.

Quote:
I immediately got a geekmail from the designer, with the following line.

Quote:

I'm always interested in constructive criticism, but just plain dumping on the game without even being appreciative of having been given a free one is not fair, especially if you're going to drag other people into rating poorly as well

The designer even chimes in on the thread later on..

I was out at a bar one night, and a famous game designer paid to have me paddled while standing on the bar.

I think that type of abuse is shameful* and while I've purchased some of his games subsequent to that event, I haven't enjoyed them!

*i did get a shot of whiskey with it, so there was a silver lining.
