Hey all,

I am trying to put together a collection of games for a Historical Gaming seminar I will be running later in the year. I have a fair number of titles already but am looking to see if there are any possibilities that I have missed. The structure of the class will mean that I need to teach the game at the beginning of the day (along with whatever historical background is needed) and we will then have 2-3 hours to play. My requirements are that the game have at least one clear statement about the subject it covers (and does not need to otherwise be terribly accurate--Diplomacy, for instance, would be fine, as it highlights the need for forging alliances in Great Power politics), and that it be possible to get a game more or less up and running after 10-15 minutes of instruction. I have more games that fall on the wargame side of things, so I'd love suggestions for non-wargames that still have something viable to say about history. Multiplayer is highly preferable to two-player.

Please feel free to add to the list with suggestions.

Illustrative of the difficulty procuring consumer goods in a communist system. (Has an excellent historical write-up to pair with.) .

As I mentioned earlier, I think this does a good enough job of reflecting the requirements for Great Powers to forge alliances that it outweighs the otherwise light history. Can't finish a game in anything like the needed time, but it's one I've run successfully in the past and might play a partial game of.

I like the cooperative element of it, and the game encourages a discussion about the depiction of slaves (particularly when paired with an article or video discussing the game Train).

I haven't tried this one yet, but the mechanics seem to handle the basic economic components of European imperial expansion (and the notion of slaves working as simply another resource to corner the market on should make for compelling discussion), as well as capturing the notion of warfare existing within the context of economic competition.

Captures the fundamentally amoral atmosphere generated by the opium trade in China, and the victory conditions make an interesting contention as to what the actual motivations for that trade were.

This one is of interest for how it gets the history wrong. (Also of interest because of some of the national attention the game got leading up to and through the 2016 election.) Provides a chance to critique mechanics and discuss what would be a more accurate approach.

Considering picking up a copy of this one. My understanding is that it is pretty abstract, but I like the notion of there being a different game to play depending on whether you are the emperor or a local lord, capturing the idea that what look at first glance like unified entities are usually nothing of the sort.

I'm thinking about this one but wondering if it is ultimately too abstract to really get a specific point across. Has the advantage of short rules and short-ish playing time, and does at least suggest that there continued to be a political struggle between factions throughout the course of the French Revolution. The floating role of the player may be a problem, though.

Might use this as a counterpoint to Diplomacy, showing the war with the alliances already fixed and instead emphasizing the attritional nature of industrial war. I think the original QM is easier to teach and play and would probably go over better, but the history is significantly better in 1914. I have multiple copies of each and so could go in either direction.

Seems simple and compelling enough to play with non-traditional wargamers. Focus on the role of supply in fighting (both with supply trains and card hands) and the concept of interior lines/the difficulty of coordinating alliances on exterior lines.

I have a copy of this and would definitely consider it--I think a streamlined take on Republic of Rome is very much worthwhile. My only caveat is that I don't teach US History, so it's the one topic where I can't make easy reference to material we covered in class.

Still might give it a go this year.

This is a terrific East vs. West game for teaching about the post-WWII struggle for the hearts and minds of Germans. It highlights the importance of improving living standards to political support and demonstrates the limits of police power in defending an ideology.

It is challenging to play well but easy to learn and plays quickly. And each card is based on an actual event in the four decades between the end of WWII and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This is an excellent game about WWII where the accent is on not the military campaign, but the wartime manoeuvering among the three allies (US, UK and USSR) for post-war supremacy.

The main focus of the game is on the various issues that divided the allies, from colonialism to atomic research. The focus of the game is on choosing which issues to bring to the forefront, and where to insist and when to give way. Each of the cards represents an actual historical figure with strengths and weaknesses that reflected their attitudes and roles. It would lend itself nicely to a team approach.

The victory conditions include a nice twist that reflects the reality of Great Power diplomacy: If the leading player wins by too great a margin, the second-place player wins the game instead, on the assumption that the others will gang up to prevent the leader from achieving global domination!

The rules also provide for scenarios of three lengths to fit the time available, from the full war to the final push.

This is a bit more abstract, but illustrates both the evolution of technology and social attitudes through the history of London from the Great Fire to the modern day. It is not hard to play, and is especially good at demonstrating the tensions between economic growth and the challenges of both pollution and poverty.

This is an economic game and might be tough to teach and play within your timeframe, but it does an excellent job of representing the transformation of the Industrial Revolution, from the canal era to the spread of railroads. Again, somewhat abstract but provides a solid base for understanding the dynamics of the era.
