Wanted a board game to play with the gf for Halloween and picked this up for cheap while I was out shopping.

From our first play it seems quite fun and challenging enough! We'd found all of the parts and picked up two but couldn't manage our water supplies and I died of thirst soblue . It was quick and easy enough to set up so with any luck we'll be getting this to the table again soon to see if we can beat it.

Possible SPOILERS Below:

We started playing Pandemic Legacy Season 1 over a year ago and made it to June and actually lost for the first time. I'm not sure if it was the fact that we lost for the first time or that other games came out and Pandemic Legacy got moved to the back of the shelf. Since Pandemic Legacy: Season 2 has come out and it looks pretty good, we decided to set up PL1 and try to finish it.

A quick scan of the rules and objectives for June made me realize how and why we lost on our first try of that month.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Those nasty Faded were all over North America and parts of Europe. Blue is our COda disease. We draw the set up infection cities and WOW this is going to be a pain.

From gallery of Omahavice

Currently we have no cure or easy ways to get rid of the Faded and they keep spreading unless we Quarantine or Road Block their diseased bodies. Once we got a handle on that and was able to get them contained, things became a little easier. We got the black disease eradicated early and started building a Military base in each of the 6 regions. We were close to being overrun by Faded but we were able to pull out the win and move onto July.

From gallery of Omahavice

WARNING: More spoilers and the CDC has determined that this game is like crack cocaine.

We immediately did our end game upgrades and began setting up to tackle July. Time to search for the Virologist and see if we can find a cure for these faded. This time the Infection Deck was much nicer to us at the set up as there were very few Faded and mostly Red cubes. She was playing the Medic so she went in and treated, while I was the Scientist and spent most of the early game trying to search for the Virologist and collect cards for cures. July went pretty smooth and we gave each other a much deserved High Five after we found the Virologist and completed all 3 objectives.

It has only been the 2 of us playing this game since the very beginning and it may be one of the best Couples Games we have ever played. It really forces you to work together and you both want the same outcome. Each month/game varies as to how long it will take to complete the objectives. June probably took us an hour and a half, while we finished July in about 45 minutes. Give this one a try, this is not your Mother's Pandemic

Game ON!

Board Game: Viticulture: Tuscany – Expand the World of Viticulture
We love this game and getting into next tiers in Tuscany expansion feels like a Legacy game

Well, we’ve already been playing with all the cards mixed in (including Viticulture: Moor Visitors Expansion) and with Mamas and Papas and properties. This time we decided to finally play on the expansion board and to add patronages. And I must say, I don’t think we’ll ever come back to the base game board The Tuscany board, with 4 worker placement seasons and the map definitely adds to the gaming experience. thumbsup Patronages are Ok, but nothing special.

This is one of our new games from Essen. It's a big hit so far, we played it in Essen, again yesterday and once more today.
Proves we like it a lot.

So short description. This game is a race, you try to build your 12 settlements first (with 2 players that is, with more you need to build less). You can pick one of 3 actions every turn.

You can get more workers, for this you spin the wheel (oh yes this game has a spinner), you get 2 workers in the color depicted (there are also spots where you can pick freely). You can pay a grain to skip to the next spot on the spinner.

Next you can use you workers in the market (you can have up to 8 workers and lose workers once placed), there are spots to get gold, stone, clay, grain and last but not least pumpkins. The colors of the workers matter, orange workers are better at getting pumpkins, light brown better for clay, black for stone and yellow for grain. You need pumpkins and don't have orange workers? No problem, 2 workers (color doesn't matter at all) can be used instead.
Further there are cheap and expensive spots (again to pumpkins, there is a 1 gold for 2 pumpkins, 3 gold for 3 and 6 gold for 4 spot) you can also send an extra worker (right color or 2 of any color) to get 1 extra resource. Once al spots on a location are filled then workers there go back to the supply (at the end of players turn).
Once that is done, it's not over yet. Then you go to the market. This part of the action is for everyone (not just the player whose turn it is). Now you bid pumpkins to get upgrade actions. These upgrade actions allow you to upgrade basic stone and clay to the upgraded versions (represented by bigger tokens).

The 3th possible action to pick is .... how could you guess, building settlements. You can build 3 settlements when you pick this action (but if you build only 2 you get 1 gold, only 1 you get 2 gold). Costs are depicted on the spot, different goods needed to build on different spots.
First settlement must be next to your wagon (a tile placed random, same for everyone), after that next to a settlement already placed (or the wagon).
Some spots give you a cow when you build there (cows are wildcards, they can be exchanged for basic resources, 3 gold or a worker of your choice).
First player to build next a lake gets a water flask (this flask gives a free turn when you exchange it).
Some spots have a big house symbol, if you build there you get to place 2 settlement tiles (only counts as one build).
Lastly if you get 4 settlements in a row, when placing the 4th you can place an extra settlement tile on top of it.

This plays so fast, you build up workers a few turns, do a big market action followed by a big build. Once you start building and manage to get some cows it speeds up a lot more. Before you know it your short just a few of resources to build your last settlements.

We really love this super fast game. My gf is even considering this as her top pick from Essen (it's between this and Pulsar 2849).
It's maybe slightly better with more players but it does work great with 2 and we are very happy we own it (and will most likely never play this again with more then 2).

We played 2 quick games of this .
It's a great trick taking game just for 2 players.
It plays smooth and fast and it's super fun.

I'm pretty sure we got our top travel game that we will be taking with us a lot. Just a deck of cards and it could be played almost everywhere (only heavy wind could maybe make this hard to play).

It's a perfect couples game, if you have any interest in a trick taking game, we certainly recommend you check this out.

We're finishing up on our pile of games from Essen.
With this played we're down to only unplayed expansions.

We already loved Codenames, and although that works nice with just 2, it's just so much better with more.
We where eager to try this and see how it improves the 2 player experience.
I'm happy to report that for us it works great.

The core stays the same but now both players give clues one after another and it's fully cooperative. The layout cards are double sided now. Every player sees one side (with 9 spies and 3 assassins on it), 3 spies are the same for both players so in total you need to find 15 spies together.
To do this you have 9 turns (1 clue is 1 turn), but you lose a turn when you guess a bystander.

We really like this 2 player version of Codenames. And every set can be mixed into this. So we can use our word cards from Codenames in this (we bought duet in english and have the base game in Dutch). And I'm now also thinking about Codenames: Pictures.
Duet upped our love for Codenames to say the least.

I picked this up in a maths trade a little while ago but hadn't managed to get it to the table. It has an archaeological theme, which is always appealing to me, and it reportedly plays well with 2 players so my wife and I took it for a spin last night.

Thematically, players are digging at archaeological sites at the ancient city of Pergamon. You'll seek funding to conduct digs to search for relics, and then exhibit what you find at the museum. The older the relic, the more interesting your exhibition will be to museum visitors, and the more points you'll earn.

We found this to be a reasonably light game but still with some interesting decisions to make. For us, the most fun part was the funding and excavation phase. You never know how much funding will be available so there's a nice push-your-luck aspect to it. Do I go earlier in turn order and get my choice of which site to excavate, but get less funding? Or do I go for more funds and hope there's something worthwhile left for me to dig for.

thumbsup Plays quickly over 12 rounds with little downtime
thumbsup Pretty artwork and nice components
thumbsup The dummy player (a tomb raider) in 2P games works well: excavations may be blocked off and funding might be stolen away from you
thumbsup Fun push-your-luck mechanic with random funding amounts from round to round
thumbsup Nice puzzle-y aspect deciding how to arrange your relic pieces to score the most points
thumbsup The theme really comes through
thumbsup Great gateway game
thumbsdown Gamers may want a bit of extra depth and decision-making
thumbsdown The relics come out randomly so the pieces you really need to complete your collection may not come out

This is one of the games we took home from Essen. It is a 2 player abstract game in a medieval Japanese setting, where you try to get the most influence with the emperor by getting ninja's, geisha, samurai etc to join you.

How does it play, in a nutshell
The board has a central palace row where there are 5 stacks of 7 chips each (each chip has one of the five aforementioned characters on it). In turn, you take 1 chip and add it to its respective column on your side of the board. Then, you both score the chip that was just revealed by taking away a chip in the palace row. Each chip of that color you have at your side, will give you points, and those are multiplied by the number of visible chips of that color in the palace row. After scoring, you place a white ghost token on top of the stack from which you took the chip. You can't take a chip from a stack with a ghost token, and they only get removed when there is no more ghost free stack in the palace row.

That's just the basics. But, it gets more interesting, because each character chip (except the samurai, they are wild and can join any column you want) has a special ability you can use before you recruit someone from the palace row. These abilities let you mess with the palace row, for instance, adding or removing a ghost token, or moving a chip from the palace row to another stack in the palace row. Caveat: when you use the ability of one of your character chips, it moves up in the column and generates less points in future scorings.

You really have to watch what your opponent's board looks like, because in our play yesterday, I was on the lead until the mid game, and then I made a stupid move giving Yves 24 points to my measly 3 points :-( I managed to catch up, but he still won...

What did we think?
Well, I'm not very fond of abstracts, but this one is very beautiful on the table. It has nice vibrant colors, and the chips and tokens are amazing quality (think Splendor like).

Board Game: TA‐KE

Just look at the gorgeous insert! I love it when publishers pay attention to that and the overall production quality!

It is also an easy one, we didn't feel we had a lot of thinking to do. Since with each turn both players score point, you just have to decide which move gives you more points than your opponent. And perhaps check what disks will become free the next few rounds. But it didn't feel like a brainburn like some other abstracts. So we like this one to play after a long day at work, when we are tired and want to relax the brain a bit instead of pushing it further. Setup is quick and easy (thanks to the amazing insert!), so you can setup and get a game out in about 30 minutes.

Board Game: TA‐KE

We had some time to kill at our local game club, and I've been eyeing this one for a few weeks, since we own and very much like 1960: The Making of the President by the same designers.

This game is very big on pre-game decisions, and there's a beginner mode that gives you a pre-set deck so you can focus on just learning the game. We played that first, and my wife (Obama) pulled out the victory.

We then played again with the full rules and it was a much more interesting game. In the end, only Florida and Montana were still up for grabs, and the electoral math made Montana's votes irrelevant making the end of the game an intense battle to secure Florida. McCain (me) managed to swing Florida, winning the election and changing history.

This is a fun little game, very short (although since we play multi-month epics, our perception of short is a little skewed) and something I'd certainly play again, but I don't think it's something I'd buy for myself.

10. Board Game: Clans of Caledonia [Average Rating:8.02 Overall Rank:41]
Board Game: Clans of Caledonia
Gave Clans of Caledonia it's first run last night. Unrelated note, there is a town/suburb just south of where I live called Caledonia.

Clans of Caledonia plays like a mash-up of many other games but in a broadly appealing way. It pulls many elements from Terra Mystica (variable round scoring, hexagonal board with wooden piece placement that provides goods/money, more gentle area control, variable clans, etc.) and a few from other games -- namely the variable market from Navegador and the contracts from any recipe fulfillment game (Marco Polo comes to mind). However, the game doesn't feel like a Frankenstein's Monster.

Basically, you expand on the board to improve your income (via woodcutters and miners) or to produce goods (wool, milk, wheat, cheese, bread, whiskey). You can up your shipping to go across rivers or lochs (ala TM) or you can hire additional merchants to send to the market so you can purchase, or sell, goods.

In addition, you can obtain export contracts that will give you end game points and possibly money or bonuses such as a free merchant or discount upgrade to your miners or woodcutters.

We have only played once so these are definitely preliminary thoughts. The game is not heavy. I'd say it is "medium" on the BGG scale. It plays smoothly and gives you a feeling of accomplishment right from the beginning. I'm not sure those who crave repressive tightness from every game will be satisfied -- it felt more easy-going -- but that is not a problem for us.

thumbsup Really good with 2 (especially in comparison to TM)
thumbsup Appealing design and aesthetics
thumbsup A respectable amount to think about during your turn
thumbsup Lots of appealing options to take
thumbsup Good production quality

thumbsupthumbsdown Not sure how many wildly divergent strategies there are -- export contracts seem to be the primary source of points

thumbsdown Nothing yet other than fiddly set-up

We'll be diving into this more as both a 2 and 3-player game very soon. Right now, I'll give it an initial

The intro game for my wife after I had played a few solo. Our Worker & Looter were on the road to recovery when a first dive on my part flipped the Hounds adding our 5th shared Affliction...

Then the hunger came upon us. We starved... Then died of too many afflictions. Sad way to go.

Really love this game. Wife found it amusing enough for another play on another night.

We've been playihg this quite a bit over the past three months. It takes few games for a new player to figure out, but my wife is there. Our game was decided on the due to 9-9 9-11, since I had my second lowest peg at 11 I won.

Easy to teach, but depth that provides some good room for exploration. I do think we'll cap out on this one eventually, but it's going to take quite a few plays to get there. We've already played this nine times in the past three months, so it's going to end up at or near the top of our most played games for the year.

We continue to really enjoy the Duet and the setup and play time means that it gets to the table quite regularly. Highly recommended.

14. Board Game: Biblios [Average Rating:7.19 Overall Rank:358]
Board Game: Biblios
Snuck in another gaming afternoon with my bestie yesterday... not strictly "couple" gaming, but since we're both focused on finding good 2p games to play with our partners, I'm going to sneak them on this list...

First we yanked the shrink of my copy of Biblios, a long languisher on my shelf of shame.

For the unfamiliar, this one's a combo of card drafting and auction, with a mechanism for manipulating the VP economy built into the cards. Easiest to learn by playing. By the time we got to auction, we realized how we could have chosen better in the drafting phase. I manipulated the VPs better but only won two categories while my friend won three categories with lower point totals. Final score, 9–8 for her.

As a side note of silliness, the game was extra fun when we immediately adopted faux-Transylvanian accents in the auction round... mixing in Sesame Street's Count as we stated, "I will pay one gold for this book... ahh ahh ahhhh!"; "I will pay TWOOO gold for this booooook... ahh ahhh ahhhh!"

15. Board Game: Arboretum [Average Rating:7.41 Overall Rank:244]
Board Game: Arboretum
Next up, Arboretum. I've had this one for a while, but I always found myself daunted by the points system and winning the right to score your points... and for good reason. What the heck?!

Quick summary: you're drafting cards into your hand, each player laying out paths of trees, always in ascending numerical order, always trying to get from one colour to another of the same colour, with assorted bonuses along the way (4 of the same colour; starting with 1; ending with 8). But you also need to keep tabs on what's in your hand so you hold enough back to be allowed to count the points on the table.

Once I get the point system a little clearer in my head, I could almost see this one becoming a favourite, a quick-to-the-table card game for a weeknight, except... it's SO frustrating when you work out a great pathway and then realize you don't get to count any of your points. And I dread explaining it to anyone else...

Also, I didn't pace myself properly and in the race to the bottom of the draw deck, I didn't get to place many of the awesome cards I'd been holding. Oh, and then when you're trying to score points, 8s in your hand are worth 0 if the other person is holding a 1... come ON!

My friend hated it — maybe because I ended up winning 15–4. But neither of us really had a clue who was ahead until the end.

Overall, this is a super pretty game that I really want to like, but I know it's going to be a bear to explain to anyone else.

What are your experiences with Arboretum? Is there some advice you can offer to make it click for me?

Board Game: Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King
Last in our game afternoon (before my friend's kids got home from school and changed the game, as it were), was Isle of Skye. This one's been on my shelf for over a year...

What a great game. At first we thought it might be long and drawn out — 6 steps to take in each of 5 rounds — but after once through a round, we flew through it.

This is a fantastic game of auction and bidding, set collection, and tile placement. The three elements work together nicely, and with a multitude of scoring objectives that will present differently in each game, it's fun to balance the choosing of what will get you points NOW with what will get you points later. It's quite light, but you're still making an abundance of interesting decisions all the way through. I can see why it won Kennerspiel 2016.

I took an early lead, but my friend crushed me in the end — more than once around the scoring track to somewhere on the third side of the rectangle (78–43). But I still think this is one that'll make it to my table often.

If I can make one picky complaint, it's that the inside of the box has NOTHING to deal with all the little bits and bobs that come in the game. Would a plastic insert have been SO hard to throw in? I sacrificed a Tupperware to the cause, but I was pretty surprised to open up a bare box.

We continued our journey through Middle Earth. In this scenario you have captured Gollum and have to make sure he doesn't escape.
We enjoyed this scenario, would love to play it again.

After having succesfully escaped the Dead Marshes of Middle-Earth, we played another match of Magic: the Gathering. No constructed decks, just the battlebox. I lost cry

To conclude our gaming session, we played another game of Azul. Great game, plays really quickly once you both know the rules. And it's great to see how you get better at it after repeated plays, I tried to pay more attention to where I put the tiles, in order to get extra points for placing the tiles.
Highly recommended!

I recently bought Patchwork and my husband and I can't stop playing. We got the game on Nov. 1st and have already played 3 times. Such a great two player game--simple, but also strategic.

Last minute purchase at Spiel at a bargain I couldn’t resist. I didn’t dare to buy the Big Box because I wasn’t sure whether she’d like it, but on hindsight I could have. Oh well, I think the base game will be sufficient for a while.

The reason we like it so much is because the rules are simple, yet the conditions change every play. It’s not the most beautiful but not that ugly either.

I’m curious how chaotic Kingdom Builder will be with three or four players, for the two of us it feels right it’s some, but not a lot of blocking.
A keeper? I don’t know, but for now it’s fun.

My wife visited the Iello booth at Spiel and got sucked into this one. Was it the game, or the free mug and promo? Hmm...

Anyway, we played it today and I have to admit that it's a pretty cool game. It's an area control game that utilizes card drafting. With two players, you each get a hand of 10 cards to start the round as well as a face down stack of 10 cards as a reserve. Each time that you go to choose a card, you first draw one from your reserve. The reserve adds a bit of the unknown factor for two players. Otherwise, after passing once, you would know all of the card available for the round.

You occupy and build cities and develop resources to score VPs (golden carrots). The value of each fief (group of territories) is the total number of towers from all cities in the fief multiplied by the number of different resources that fief produces. As the game wears on, you're trying to enlarge your fiefs and create new ones. It plays in about an hour.

Recommended for couples (out of three stars)?

It's another "wife's back in town" weekend, so we settled in to play after dinner on Friday. She said she was feeling sharp, so let's go with Duet. We picked up where we left off last month--stuck in Bogota (8-3) having failed 8 straight times.

We got off to a good start but foundered late. She had given me the clue "Borscht, 2" which was clearly "Russia" but not clear on any others. After another round and almost out of additional time tokens, it was clear I was going to have to try and guess the second word if we were going to have any chance of winning. I tried "Mother" (thinking Mother Russia), which ended up being a correct word but the look she gave me when I picked it hinted that it wasn't the one she'd been thinking of. I tried again with "Garden," thinking that's where beets come from. Another correct guess and another funny look. I stopped, since "Mother" had been the last word that was also one of mine, and she gave me the clue "Bubble" which led me to guess "Boil," which was her other word with "Borscht," which gave us the victory.

We moved on to Rio (7-3), which had a quick assassin loss on the first clue, and then ran out of time the second attempt. The third try had some similar shots guesses that weren't what the clue giver intended that ended up being correct, allowing us to win on the last turn.

I think this is our favorite version of Codenames.

After the stress of Codenames: Duet, we decided to wrap up the evening with something fairly easy on the brain. We played match play rules, and I ended up winning 8-5.
