Hello friends! Welcome to the November list. This is, as you will know by now, the place where we ask the only important question in life: What wargames are on your table?

It doesn't matter if it's solo or opposed, an old classic or a genre-busting innovator, face-to-face or vassal. If it feels like you are playing a wargame, then you probably are. We just want to hear about it.

And I don't think it's too early to mention - Santa Grogs is coming to town..

My Vassal game against Rex continues and things are looking hairy in the west. Buell bounced off Bragg's army smaller army in Nashville but Grant is on a mean flanking manoeuvre. He is just about to squash Kirby Smith's little force at Dover and then he will be free to move into Bragg's rear. Tough times ahead in Tennessee.

Over in the east, Lee is hanging out in Pennsylvania and living off the land. Not sustainable practice but he's enjoying himself so who am I to get involved? Down the road, McClellan took himself out of his comfort zone and dangled his army provocatively close to some important Confederate rail lines in Virginia. It was irritating enough to divert Jacko from his mission of re-opening Lee's supply line in order to cut off Mac's and then whip the Yankee back to Washington.

So, it's ups and downs in summary.

I've had this on the learning table and will certainly have another go through it. It's a pretty straightforward set of rules and a very schoolnight-friendly playing time but I reckon it has some chops too, if you accept it's limitations.

Looking forward to getting it on the ftf table with Local Wargame Man later this month.

My fitful PBEM game is still ongoing. My Carthaginians are fighting to a draw at Argentum, but have been able to use our control of the seas around Sicily to settle much of the western portion of the island.

This one hasn't grown on my as much as I would have hoped. I really loved AFAoS when I discovered it and slammed through game after game, but I've found this one a bit cumbersome in comparison. It may just be a function of not having spent enough concentrated time with it.

Two games in the early going. Playing the West in a peaceful 1937. I've gone heavily defensive with builds and pushed strength into France, but am now woefully light on cards and industry. Thankfully, the Axis has been quiet so far.

Just building initial production for the Axis in the second game.

Scenario 4: Blood Gulch, and my paratroopers have largely been blasted out of the first and second hedgerows and are falling back on the town itself. On the plus side, they've scored a number of KIAs on German troops that advanced into fire, but they are still hurting for support until those Shermans show up. It's looking far away at the moment.

My PBEM game is going so slowly that it might as well not exist. It's been a frustrating game to play PBEM, which is a bit surprising, as I've found Churchill to play very well in the same format. Then again, it's a substantially different design.

Despite the few errors that have been made out to be more of a disaster than it actually is, this is a pretty good game. Although there are 50 turns in the full campaign, many of them go by in a few minutes and I would encourage everyone to use all of the optional rules as they a) add a lot to the game, and b) aren't much extra work. I'm up to Turn 30 on my first playing and if there's one complaint you can make is that there is some repetition to the turns, i.e., moving replacements, battles over the same choke points, etc.

It is a good looking game, plays pretty fast (I'm estimating about 4 hours for the full game) and would be ideal for teaching new gamers.

Paul (Central Powers) v. David (Allied Powers)
Variant(s): Rulebook Historical Scenario; Ted Racier's Historical Scenario
Played: via Facebook Messenger video chat
Playtime: 20 hrs, 15 min
Outcome: AP victory by armistice in Winter, 1919

This was our first full game of 'Paths' that Paul and I played all the way to the bitter end of Winter, 1919. It was an epic slog. By 1917 I was really feeling the war grinding me down, with seemingly no end in sight.

I barely held out in the Near East due to some extremely poor logistical choices. I was lucky to hold onto Cairo and Port Said. Lawrence of Arabia got me Damascus near the very end. But I lost Alexandria to the Libyans, as well as Basra, Mosul, and Baku further east. Paul had the Kemal card every time I attacked with the RU Cau and BR NE armies, which ground them both down in short order. The MEF got their supply lines cut and died in the deserts of Iraq.

Paul had killed off the Serbian armies early, and protected the area around Salonika with a AH army and BU corps. Because of this, I never ended up playing "Salonika" or the card that gets you the FR Army of the Orient. Nor did I ever end up bringing in RO or GR, as they would've been easy pickings.

Paul had advanced extremely far in Russia, but was spread so thin my Russian reinforcements were able to push back in the north, retaking Riga, Minsk, and Vilna. I even was able to sally forth in the south and take back Odessa from the Austrians. Ultimately, these late Russian offensives likely won the game for me, as they recaptured enough VPs to keep me ahead.

Italy barely held on against Austrian invasion, and was in the process of being conquered as the game ended. A few more turns and Paul likely would've taken nearly all the VP spaces in Italy.

In the west, my French assaults had taken Aachen, Koblenz, Metz, and Strasbourg. But in 1919, Paul retook Koblenz with the "Peace Offensive" card. Then he retook Aachen against a stack of three BR armies with the "Operation Michael" card that allows the GE to ignore trench effects. This caused the utter destruction of the BR armies, as they lost by only one point, and so had to take a one-space (rather than two-space) retreat. As Liege was full up, there was nowhere for them to go, so they were annihilated and removed from the game.

All in all, it was a glorious, bloody slog. I loved it at times. I hated it at times. And I hung on for dear life as the game really felt like it started to go against me from 1917 onwards. Somehow, the Allied Powers eked out a narrow win.

It's been a really long time since I've posted anything to this forum, although I have been keeping up with all that's going on. I'm hoping to blitz through some games in the coming months and will add many interesting session reports, with pictures.

After a few practice sessions to make sure I had the rules down, I'm finally ready to give this game some serious focus. From what little I've played so far, this is turning out to be a really wonderful experience. It evokes that "Just one more turn ..." feeling in me and I had to force myself to walk away from the table last night lest I get sucked up in its compelling story. I LOVE when games do that to me.

I've had this game and its expansion sitting on my shelf for the past 2 years and have never made it past scenario 4. I've finally decided to make my way through the various scenarios in order to find out what happens in the storyline. It's a great game about an alternate history where the Nazis went into hiding just as the Allies nuked their last stronghold. The area surrounding the resulting fallout was walled up. Now, many years later, the Nazis have emerged from the the shelters in the wasteland with the intention of once again rising to power.

Since I received my copy back from the original Kickstarter, this game has only managed to make it to the table once. I've recently reviewed the rules and have roped 2 potential opponents, neither of whom are wargamers, into experiencing it with me. I hope our plays will hook them into wargaming.

I was planning to go the A Few Acres of Snow route first but I think they can handle the extra depth and complexity, which in my opinion really make this game shine.
