This is the latest, updated list of non rated games post Essen Spiel 2017. Rated games and games no longer in collection are removed from the previous list in order to lower the page count and to avoid clutter.

Why this list?

During my acquisition frenzy I came to a situation where I played only 50% of the games I own. I do realize it is not the most rational thing but I am proud of my collection. Having that in mind I created this list to motivate me to play and rank all those games standing on the shelf and waiting.

I will write down my impressions and ranks after one play and after 3 plays (when I officially rank the game). This will help me keep track of the evolution of my taste and, hopefully, wisdom.
123: Not yet played required number of games.
123: Played required number of games.

Desire to play level (DTPL) is a value describing itself in following way:
: I have no desire to play this game whatsoever, only my passion towards statistics or Heather Graham can make me play it, maybe.
: I have desire to play this game eventually but not today. Maybe next month.
: I want to play this game soon if everybody are OK with it.
: I can't wait to play this game and I might easily enforce it!

Rating: I was using BGG rating system at first, but starting from November 2016 I switched to a brand new rating system developed by 3EBC and me explained >>here<<. I slowly started modifying ratings for all games on this list switching from rates with one decimal place to significantly lower ratings with 2 decimal places from 1.00 do 10.00, with much better and more seamless results.

Games owned: 339

Games not played: 148
Percentage played: 55%

Box impression: I backed this game and original Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization as a part of huge Eagle Games Kickstarter project which I have jumped in after the campaign has ended and received box full of goodies right after. I donated majority of the games but kept this one, Masters Gallery and Oltre Mare.
This one is a civilization building version of Yahtzee, with cool looking wooden dice. I think there is a time and place for this one, but still not sure where and when. I am keeping it until then.

Honestly I don't know much about this game except it has a map of the Mediterranean, boats and trading and I find "Trading in the Mediterranean" theme quite appealing.

Box impression: I bought this game used from a friend and for a price, all with original card sleeves, custom made location sculptures and foam core protectors for miniatures. I was very impatient to get my hands on this game because everything about it so epic and magical. It's by all it's peers the best Lord of the Rings themed game ever. I also acquired Lords of Middle Earth and Treebeard expansions and sorted armies in separate Plano boxes. It is sitting on the shelf waiting for it's moment and that moment is near.

Box impression: Best ranked Uwe Rosemberg's game after Agricola (one of my favorites), therefore I had to have it. It seems like a sand box type, resource management Euro, leaning towards multiplayer solitaire, but I have yet to try it out. And it's huge! It also has Le Grand Hameau expansion included in the box.
Update: Meanwhile, Caverna jumped in front of all of them.

Desire to play level:

First impression: No, it's not multiplayer solitaire. It is extremely important what other people do while the game puts you in vast numbers of decisions to make every turn. And every mechanic has amazing thematic explanation. This game is probably my favorite Uwe so far but I have yet to try with more than 2 players. First game with two players following different strategies finished in 169:169! I love every aspect of this game.

Box impression: After getting and loving Kemet I rapidly acquired it's brother Cyclades with all the expansions. I just love idea of fast paced Euro style war game. The Greek mythology theme and lovely miniatures greatly helped my decision. Still have to try it out on the table.

Box impression: The box is huge. I traded my copy of Alhambra because I decided to get Big Box version. I love the idea of big boxes with everything packed in one place, and I backed ALL Queen Games Big Box projects on Kickstarter. Truth be told, in many of the cases, including this one, the box is 50% empty and I strongly doubt it requires more expansions. I am tiny bit frustrated because of the wasted space on my shelf, but not nearly enough to stop wanting them all! Alhambra being simple classic family game have not yet found it's family but it might change come winter.

Desire to play level:

1
First impression: I jumped in for a quick game and I was pleasantly surprised of how the game turn out to be. It's actually very dynamic and tight, with a little bit of luck required. There is a spatial element with walls, and efficiency engine with buying tiles with the exact amount of money. It plays well, simple and fast. I might play it more often, if only the box was not that huge. It's still not time for all those expansions just yet.

Box impression: Not this one on the list item image but the old Mayfair 2008 version, with classic wooden components. I wanted this game for a long time and I was happy when FFG announced the reprint, but when I saw the ugly plastic pieces I decided to skip it and immediately found a used Mayfair edition copy on eBay, nicely preserved and for a nice price. One of the most precious pieces in my possession having it is Reiner Knizia most renown game. Semi abstract tile placement strategy game with ancient Mesopotamian theme. I love the idea of it and can't wait to try it out.

Box impression: I bought it because A) it is a well ranked heavy Euro and B) a wonderful trip to Madeira island with my roommates after which I wanted to surprise them with something familiar. Later I noticed that the authors Nuno Bizarro Santieiro and Paulo Soledade are quite aspiring board game designers and I started paying attention to their other designs. Furthermore I started paying attention to everything that Portuguese designers are making because the results are astonishing.
Haven't yet read the rules but I got the Ambassadors expansion and I am ready to try the game out.

Desire to play level:

1
First impression: I finally dived into this heavy beast. Well, heavy by Euro games standards. It is difficult to master, and not easy to learn. It's a dice placement, worker placement, contract fulfilling, optimization economic game with little bit of area majority and risk management with avoiding pirates. We played three player game and it was tight, there is so much to do and yet so little time and not enough room for all three of us so it's a constant race and battle of wits. It seems it has multiple winning strategies, which I like, but I also have a feeling it could not last up to 10 games since the state of the board is more or less the same from round 2 to round 5. There is no much progress in the sense of building up and story arch. It was tense and brain crunching, but not very climactic. I have to play more.
Rating: 7.21

23
Second impression: 2 more games and finally I scored a win (during the game with two beginners however). The game is really intricate in the sense of the decision making. The main driving mechanism are the contracts which will score 90% of the points, so the careful selection of contracts and good planning are key factors. Which is cool. Now, following those plans is a different thing and asks for quick tactical thinking and surplus of bread (because bread is used to mitigate low dice). It plays great with 3 and 4 but I have doubts for 2 players variant (as it is with many Euro games).
Rating: 7.47

Final verdict: Keeping it, for now.

Box impression: I don't know much about this game except it is typical Friedemann Friese resource management game, it is green and it starts with letter F. I got it used in good condition for a small price.

Desire to play level:

1
First impression: We played a two players game first, just so could I grasp the rules and the complexity. It has some feel of the real Power Grid, but it is completely different game. It is about optimization of a factory with four stats in mind: production, capacity, electricity spending and work force. There is some bidding for playing order and a lot of math involved which is typical for Herr Friese. My opponent Krištof gave a perfect description of this game in two players: It's unforgiving. And it truly was - if one player makes advantage early, it is almost impossible to catch him up. I definitely have to try this game with more players.

Box impression: Basically it is a bag full of lovely rune inscribed pebble stones. Real stones. I am not yet sure how to play it but it does not take a lot of space and I found it second hand and really cheap. I found two and gave one copy to my friend as a gift. Still have to try it out but it does seems frenetic and simple. It's a dexterity game in essence, where we have to grab pebbles from the table before others.

Box impression: Three reasons to own this game: 1) it's typical Stefan Feld Euro game, 2) it is alea Big Box series and 3) it is one of my dream destinations for a vacation. On the other side there is 0 reasons not to play this game very soon. It's worker placement game with dice.
I also have Orange God Tiles mini expansion.

Desire to play level:

1
First impression: We played it with 2 players first. It reminded us a lot of the Castles of Burgundy mechanically but it is clearly much more complex. There is always something to do and every of your turns has to be optimal and you have to keep attention to many different tracks and options which causes some serious analysis paralysis, and I loved the analysis part. It was the first game and we made a lot of mistakes which I certainly want to address and make right in the next game. Also I think it would be better with more players where it becomes more interactive.
Rating: 7.33

23
Second impression: I haven't yet tried Bora Bora with 4 players, but 3 players games are pretty solid so far. There is actually quite a lot of player interaction on many fields. Action selection system shines with more players (and I guess it gets more ruthless with 4). Theme is weak, but turquoise color is dominant and shells are currency so there is a slight feeling you are on tropical island. As in many other Feld's games it is of utmost importance to utilize various action combos and that's where the beauty lies.
Rating: 7.33

Final verdict: Keeping it as it is alea Big Box.

Box impression: I decided to get this game after I watched Richard rahdo Hamm's runthrough of it. It happens, but rarely, that I have a huge desire to play a game after seeing the run through on a video and in this case it seemed that Russian Railroads have everything I ask from a (Euro) game which it is - a seemingly heavy, railroad building, worker placement, resource management game.
Oh, it's still in shrink wrap.

Box impression: Yet another beautiful city named worker placement and bidding Euro game, with glorious Art Nouveau theme. Box is opened, components are sorted out but rules are not yet read. It is one of the games on the priority list for the game night. I bought it cheaply because of the slightly damaged box.

Desire to play level:

1
First impression: Excellent game with multiple paths to victory with majority + shields being so far the most dominant one. One player had a constant lead and finished with 57 points in front of the others so I have a strong feeling that fight for area majority must not be ignored. Collecting and selling art is fun. Maybe focusing on art or on buildings exclusively can be viable strategies as well. I don't know but I need to find out. Great Feld-like game with wonderful art from Troyes' Alexandre Roche.

Box impression: At the same time I am writing this I am counting minutes until the next Jamey Stegmaier's masterpiece in board game design - Kickstarter project for Scythe. I love Euphoria dearly and having missed both previous Kickstarter projects (not counting Treasure Chests and Between Two Cities) I decided to acquire all of the Stonemaier games as soon as I can because of the immense quality, design, themes, play testing and work ethics they invest in their projects. I haven't yet tried Viticulture but I expect I will enjoy it's worker placement mechanic with immersive vine making theme (I can compare it with how I enjoy Vinhos).
Huge expansion for this game, Tuscany, is on my must have list.

Box impression: Kickstarter project by Isaac Childres and his first game. I trusted that the geek he is (judging by his posts) he would make an amazing and unique Euro style game. It is indeed unique, components are beautiful but I have yet to test it out. The reviews are mixed with giving it mediocre score but I am sure they will not influence my judgement. Rahdo claims it is one of the best games in 2014. I also backed Isaac's newest Kickstarter project - Gloomhaven.

Box impression: I backed this game on the Kickstarter because it very much looked like space Carcassonne with triangles instead of square tiles which, you must admit, sounds awesome. It really did drew inspiration from aforementioned game and it is beautifully made. It helps that I have great affinity for space themed games.
I still have not played it due to supersaturation of space themed games in my collection and I haven't yet hooked all my people to Carcassonne yet alone something that is it's spin off.

Box impression: A game with unique and awesome wave mechanic. You arrange dice on the cardboard wave and then you wave the wave and dice fall all over the board. Besides, it has cute and silly ocean beach theme with crazy sea creatures miniatures, perfect for my nephew. It was long OOP but Game Salute Kickstarted it and I received it in 2015.

Box impression: Another Reiner Knizia in my possession (one of the most common designers in my collection). This time it is his most famous 2-player card game with poker like battle mechanic. I usually have a problem with organizing time for 2-players-only games but this one shouldn't take long, unlike some other GMT games for two players, and I imagine I am going to try it soon.

Box impression: Another tiny card game Kickstarter project I backed. Like in many other cases I backed it because of beautiful artwork with steampunk humanoid animals and steampunk is a keyword I still find appealing.
It is 2-player card game of wars between different flying steampunk factions with quite interesting mechanic of playing it without using any kind of surface. There is also an original version with 2 more factions which I will certainly get depending on the impressions of this one.
Update: I also acquired original oddball Äeronauts on Essen Spiel 2016 auction.

Box impression: Russians made a cool pyramid building, set collecting, card drafting game and Mayday Games published it through Kickstarter. It was quite hyped and I, of course, have not resisted and backed it. It arrived fast and soon I expect a fun time playing it.

Box impression: Me and one of my gaming groups grew almost cult-like praise for Vital Lacerda and his games. I loved CO2 and Vinhos and when I saw the reviews for his busiest and most complex game so far it was an instant acquisition. It is about automobile factory management and it's crazy detailed on the first glance. The box is still in shrink wrap, waiting for his earlier games to be played few more times first. The same fate will definitely reach the Gallerist, Vital's latest game at that moment.

Box impression: Another game which I first saw on rahdo's run-through and immediately wished to own and play. It's fine worker placement game with pool building, or better phrased, bag building mechanic. The theme is about spreading the influence in the medieval Orléans, so basically another city-named Euro game which I can't wait to try out.
Update: Meanwhile I acquired bunch of mini expansions, fifth player expansion and fan upgrade kit. Can't wait to try it out.

First impression: I had a lot of fun playing my first Orleans. It reminded me of Hyperborea, a game with very similar mechanics, the another game that uses bag building, that I know of. We played with four players and the game had it's problems, mainly with AP and obvious lack of interaction. The player order only matters when it comes to filling town hall and when traveling and building guildhalls. In case of the former, it only matters who filled the last free space in the office which is a direct case of so called "last hitting" which I am not fan of. In case of the traveling, it is important to be the first to build a house. Both cases carry equal amount of points in the end. Oh, the player order also matters in the case when some of the resources are running out so you have to be the first to grab those. Maintaining planning phase in the cases mentioned above is particularly sluggish and awkward. Choosing a technology tile, albeit very interesting, is also AP prone due to the sheer amount of tiles and information overload because all technology tiles are available for purchase (especially because 6 mini expansions were included). I expect all of those problems will be solved with more sessions and I really do want to play it more.

Second impression: Still a very enjoying game. We played 2 more games with 4 players and it was noticeably better experience when we houseruled drafting places tiles by drawing 2 and choosing 1. It still boggles me why they designed it in the way that each of the 30+ place tiles is available from the get go. Also, Trade & Intrigue expansion improved the beneficial deeds a lot. This is an essential expansion. It lasts too long, especially in last few turns and especially if all places are available and players are not familiar with those. There is still a lot to see here however and I will not refuse a game.
Rating: 6.91

Final verdict: Keeping it, mostly because I have all expansions.
