This is a geeklist for the Slashing Through Cinema Guild to add and discuss holiday themed horror films! (Ill doll this header up when I'm on my comp vs. tablet)

Wait...you stumbled this geeklist and aren't part of the guild?

Do you like candy canes but wished a psychopath would use them as a weapon to cut up his victims? Well, then I have the guild for you!

We have a monthly geeklist where we post what horror flicks we have watched along with other horror themed discussions.

But for this list, I am interested in compiling Holiday Horror. At the moment Christmas Horror. There are plenty. Nothing like wrapping presents while a slasher wraps up his victims. Check the list before adding an item to make sure it hasn't already been added to the list. Also, some portmanteaus do have Christmas sections, and those are good as well. Heck, even appropriate tv episodes would work as well.

Give and get film ideas and have fun!

Black Christmas (1974)

The grand-daddy of them all. One of the earliest slasher films as well as Christmas Horror. This involves a sorority during Christmas break. A crank caller turns deadly as girls start to disappear and people try and uncover the killer.

While this film certainly has its place in horror cinema history, it moved a bit slow for me. Perhaps on repeat viewings it will click for me.

Krampus (2015)

A boys loss of Christmas spirit brings Santa's darker half to town. Krampus arrives and, unlike Santa, takes instead of gives.

This is done by the same director as Trick or Treat (a classic modern horror flick) and, while it has the same black humor as Trick or Treat, it pulls its punches in favor of trying to reach a wider audience, to the movies detriment. However, that detriment is small in comparison to a well crafted movie and shockingly great practical effects.

Rare Exports (2010)

Hunters come across what they believe is Santa Clause but, as it turns out, it is something far worse.

This film, similar to Krampus, also pulls from older European mythos about Santa Clause and, as a result, he is far scarier than modern department stores would like you to know about. The movie follows a smaller, poorer community who stumble across a industrial excavation and come across what they believe is Santa. They then debate what to do with their discovery, and how to profit.

This one is a lot of fun and I recommend. Fun take on the old world Santa folklore as well as crafting a new story and making a good Christmas movie with horror elements.

Gremlins (1984)

Ah. Yes. The perennial favorite of movie geeks to put on when someone asks for a Christmas movie then respond with "It DOES take place during Christmas." When they ask why Miracle at 34th Street isn't on the television.

Gizmo. Food. Gremlins. Chaos. You know the drill by now.

Tales From The Crypt (1972)

Heh. Those of you who have seen this movie know what segment I'm referring to. For those unfamiliar, I am referring to the first segment: And All Through The House.

A woman who is home alone is subject to a attempted home invasion by an escaped mental patient dressed as Santa Clause.

This segment still gives me chills as it is a home invasion segment done right in every way. The whole movie is fun but this segment stayed with me. Highly recommended.

(They did remake this for the tv show at a later date and is fleshed out more )

Better Watch Out - this one recently hit VOD and the Modern Horrors podcast guys hyped it pretty hard. Haven't seen it, but it could be better than most from what I've heard. It's rated 6.6 on IMDB for whatever that is worth.

Christmas Evil: Aka You Better Watch Out

Technically more of a "rampage film" than a horror masterpiece, but there are classic horror tropes at play within and it has become a holiday tradition in my household since I made my partner watch it eight years ago.

I'm not going to say that it's a great film, but there is a fair amount to enjoy here if you like dark and bizarre (this killer Santa is arguably a little more sympathetic than some other maniacs who've donned the red suit, so it won't have the same body count as some other movies on this list, but it's still a fun ride). Bonus: John Waters did a commentary track for the film which sells it better than I ever could.

I enjoyed the hell out of this slashy Christmas horror anthology. It comes complete with a bitchin' Kringle-vs-Krampus fight, a zombie-elf epidemic, and a neat twist ending.

DUH.

Okay, it's not a slasher, per se, but for me at least it's the first thing that springs to mind when I put together the words 'Christmas' and 'horror'.

Body (2015). Three college coeds decide to spend Christmas Eve at the house of one's uncle. Bad things happen. Not a classic, but worth watching.

Rabid, directed by David Cronenberg, takes place during the Christmas season. It isn't a major element in the story.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
In one scene, the police shoot and kill a mall Santa Claus by mistake.

Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

A later entry in the Holiday/Horror ouvre, but is smack dab in the middle of slasher central, with a release date of 1984. The movie follows a young child who, after seeing his parents murdered and assaulted by a Santa Claus, is orphaned and traumatized. Add 10 years of oppressive nunsploitative orphanage discipline, and you have a slasher in the making. Pressed into dressing as Santa Claus at a local toy store, a killing spree ensues.

I really liked this one. In addition to having the main hallmarks (see what I did there?) of a good slasher movie, it also has a above par soundtrack, cinematography, story, and kills. Plus, it is very festive. I would say this is a good benchmark to compare other Holiday Horror against as Christmas is so interwoven into everything with this movie. Recommend.

Apparently enough other people thought so as well to make Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, 3, 4, & 5.

Have a red band!

ELVES (1989)

This movie is so bad, but so much fun!

"A young woman discovers that she is the focus of an evil Nazi experiment involving selective breeding and summoned elves, an attempt to create a race of supermen. She and two of her friends are trapped in a department store with an elf, and only Dan Haggerty, as the renegade loose-cannon Santa Claus, can save them."

Nothing else needs to be said after reading that plot synopsis...
it's perfect!

"The Pact" (2012). Has nothing to do with werewolves. Good horror movie that takes place during Christmas. A woman inherits her mother's house, and strange things begin to happen. Avoid reading anything about it if you plan to watch it, as it is very spoiler sensitive.
