From my Secret Santa;

Ho ho ho!

Thank you for your message. Post up to the North Pole can be slow this time of year - the Elves in charge tend to get lost in the dark or eaten by bears. Still, plenty more where they came from!

Santa has seen the additions to your list, and feels that you have put in a lot of effort. I may not know a lot about these so-called 'games' but you seem to. However, the Naughty/Nice List Generator has had a malfunction this weekend and I can't seem to access the list! This could be a disaster, and all the Elves have been redirected to work on getting this working again. Therefore, to work out eaxactly what you deserve I need to know where you fit on the Naughty/Nice scale.

Can you answer the following questions for me? The best place would be here so that others can see what they need to do to judge their Niceness Quotient. I'll use the answers to determine the level of gift to send you. Good luck!

1) What is your favourite thing about the holiday season?
2) How much time are you likely to spend with family this year?
3) When you indulge your sweet tooth, what is your snack of choice?
4) We all know Santa likes his brandy. Do you have a favourite tipple?
5) When you play these 'games', do you have a preferred colour of playing piece?

Plus, I have heard from one of my secret sources that there are some contentious issues in your chosen hobby. To make a well rounded judgement, I need to know where you stand on the following issues:
a) Sleeves - a necessity for every game, or a waste of time only perfectionists would use?
b) Food and drink whilst gaming - the 8th deadly sin, or an absolute necessity to enjoy the experience?
c) Storing games - horizontal or vertical?
d) Kickstarter - the best way to get new games so back everything, or a waste of time only containing drivel and overpriced miniatures disguised as a board game?

Once I see the results, I will analyse them and your gift will be assembled and dispatched.
Merry Christmas!
Santa

Got taunted in the wee hours of the morning! Seems Santa is pretty tech-savvy. My secret Santa has apparently commissioned some sort of robotic computer programming to help with all that busy work! haha robot

"The S3P2T (Super Santa Selection, Preparing, Packaging and Tracking) system has been at work, your package came down to multiple coin flips. We pride ourselves that this automated system will reliably adequately choose your "gift" using a complex computer program that takes into account 52 different facets of information eeny, meeny, miny, moe system that always usually fails to select the perfect a gift. This is why the coin flip makes for the best tie breaker.

We are not confident that you will receive your gift in a timely manner but rather that it will arrive precisely when it is intended. A word of good cheer. Packages are stacked up all over the place inside and outside of the facilities and occasionally Reindeer mark packages with a personal touch so consider this a special North Pole treat. I think Vixen was sniffing around your package but who knows... they all look alike to me except Rudolph.

Sincerly,
The S3P2T automated system

AKA Santa's New helper"

Hey Everyone!! Santa's talking to me this year! I must've been good!

But, he wants me to prove how good I've been, and the people around me.

"Render unto us a geeklist most cheerful. Specifically a geeklist of good deeds, at least two of which must be yours and done recently, that is at least 25 entries. I hope you have some good friends willing to share stories, it may be impossible for you otherwise! You may find allies in some unexpected places.

Oh, and you must complete this task before the jade eagle returns to its nest..."

So, can you guys help me out? I've been good... but not 25 deeds good. What have you done lately I can add to my list and prove to Santa there is good around me?

If you want, head over to my listMy Geeklist or feel free to post here and I will add them. Thanks for all of your help everyone!

Thanks guys, and have fun!

Brian

Earlier this month, Santa sent me this cryptic, inscrutable message:

Then today, I got a gift in the mail, in the form of three Magic: The Gathering cards.

Three seemingly random Magic: The Gathering cards with no discernible common theme.

I don't get it. What does it all mean? I've played MTG before and I like it well enough, but I hadn't asked for MTG cards on my wishlist. And three sub-rare cards isn't much of a gift. I can't make a deck out of that. Also, I usually play green, not red. I guess it's my fault for not noting that in my profile.

Thanks anyway, Santa. I'll add the Coal Golem, Coal Stoker and Shower of Coals to my card collection.

I thought I had a silent Santa, but then he or she sent me the best taunt of all. an actual, physical Christmas card taunt. A couple SS before have sent me great Christmas cards, but this is the first I've gotten with clues to the gifts. Anyone want to take some guesses?

*EDIT* Hmm, can't seem to get that third one to straighten up.

About a week ago, Santa sent me this message:

I immediately jumped on my secret code breaking techniques and did some frequency analysis to finally find the solution to his puzzle:

I need help. I'm sure they are watching me. Let me know you received this and reply in kind - open communication is not safe. Gaming should still be ok but remember to play fair. Speak soon. Santa

I answered him using the secret code, but I lost the message I sent back...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I was so ecstatic at having a playful Santa and I wanted to post his puzzles somewhere on BoardGameGeek, but couldn't find where to post it... He linked me to this geeklist in his next message:

Fbeel sbe orvat bhg bs pbagnpg sbe fb ybat - V arrqrq gb fgnl bss gur enqne gb znxr fher V jnfa'g orvat sbyybjrq. Sorry for being out of contact for so long - I needed to stay off the radar to make sure I wasn't being followed. I can't tell you where I am in case this message is intercepted, but I need your help. I've been on the run for days and my reindeer are tired. I need a safe place to rest for a few days. Please find someone willing to shelter me (I've heard there are some trustworthy people here: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/232860). Christmas depends on you - good luck and remember to play fair. Santa.

I immediately jumped on the occasion to finally share this with BoardGameGeek. The last message was faily long and took a bit to transcribe. I also lost the codes to the last message so I had to redo the puzzle again! I can see some hints of possible gifts he might send me...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

But to the topic at hand... Could someone here help me and Santa? He needs someone to shelter him! Is there a soul generous enough?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

After ChaosCreature's generous help, I sent Santa this message back:

Qrne Fnagn,

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't wait to get another message from Santa.

Our Secret Santa is having us work for our gifts this year! We’ve already solved riddles and searched for hidden presents, and now we’ve been tasked to share a story of Christmas past with the fine people of this thread.

After Thanksgiving in 2013, we found out that I was getting laid off and we decided to pack up and move back to Indiana (from the DC area) before Christmas; a tall task indeed. One complication was that we had already gotten Christmas decorations, including a real tree.

Seeing as the tree was less than a week old and it would be a shame to have it go to waste, we decided to give it away using our apartment’s internal message board. A few days after posting it a Polish lady came knocking, and she and her son took our tree. Just a short while later, she came back and asked how she was supposed to make it stand up because apparently she had never had a real Christmas tree before. We were moving so we went ahead and gave her our stand too. She was so grateful that she sent her son back a few hours later with a couple bags of Polish candy and a Happy Holidays!

Awwww Yissssssssss.

First message from Santa for my first time doing the exchange:

Ho Ho Ho! Merry early board game Christmas!

Or, rather, merry late early board game Christmas!

Santa put a lot of thought into your gift this year, which is unfortunate, because he could have put very little thought into your gift and ended up with the same results, probably a lot sooner. Merry apologies for that, courtesy of Santa. Regardless though, you've got a fun box headed your way, estimated to hit your doorstep this Tuesday, December 12th. The tracking number is REDACTED, if you'd like to keep a closer eye on the path from store to door.

Just one more thing: I'd love to write a little about your gift, but I also want to preserve the surprise. If you're interested in some bonus commentary, feel free to just shoot me a quick note once you've opened the box and had a chance to see what's inside. And either way, happy gaming, and Merry Christmas!

If you are stalking this, Santa, just know I'm very excited and humbled already! Especially since I sent my recipient a few sealed games that were delivered 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything!

Santa's helpers from the AU/NZ Secret Santa exchange encouraged me to do some extra donating on their behalf to some charities that are close to my heart. They and I hope that you will be encouraged by the spirit of giving to consider giving yourself - below are two charities that I donate to and donated on behalf of Santa's team.

Quiz Worx is a children's ministry organisation that I have worked for and supported since 2009. They seek to share the good news of Jesus with kids everywhere through creative and engaging means. They originally brought me on board while I was first studying at Youthworks Bible College. This role was doing a little bit of everything including Bible teaching, puppetry, animation, acting and more. The only thing I didn't do that is a frequent part of their ministry is driving - as I didn't have my license at that stage! They have brought me on in a couple of roles since then, but as the ministry involves traveling all over Australia it wasn't the right fit for my family (more on that below). As we can't work for them, but it is a ministry that we see as very important, we support them on a monthly basis.

The second charity that I donated to was beyondblue. beyondblue’s work is aimed at achieving an Australian community that understands anxiety, depression and suicide, empowering all people in Australia, at any life-stage, to seek support. beyondblue raises awareness, reduces stigma and ensures people have access to the information they need to support recovery, management and resilience. Importantly for me, beyondblue (along with the Black Dog Institute and other services) has been helpful in assisting my wife and I with dealing and understanding her depression. My wife has suffered from depression since she was a little girl and major stressful times (her university studies, moving, marrying me, moving more, job uncertainty, having two children) are times we would not have made through without the efforts these organisations have put in. They help me to be a better carer, knowing specifics of how to listen, knowing what to do and what to say, and pointing to places to go for help.

We are very thankful to Ms Pepper Mint and Miss Charrey Tee for providing means for extra support to these organisations.
