Lacking inspiration, I have been rolling dice to randomly pick one of the games on one of the shelves in my games room, and then trying to come up with some sort of question inspired by the game. So, first up, The Witches.

The question...

Are you or your family fans of Terry Pratchett?

Interesting. My dice took me to an obscure corner and Hobbit Tales.

So today there was the announcement that Amazon has commissioned a TV series based on Lord of the Rings, something that seems to have stirred up excitement, horror, and indifference in various parts of the internet.

So the question...

Is there a book or series of books that you would really like to see made into a TV series? Or alternatively, if you wish, something that should be totally steered clear of and left on bits of dead tree?

Wow, this is actually becoming something of a theme with these franchise based games. It's many years since I played this one, but I keep it around because I remember it being an interesting semi-coop that reflects its source pretty well. Maybe rose tinted hindsight?

And the question...

Is there a game that you think does a great job of being a game based on a licensed IP? Or again, an alternative question if you prefer to moan: can you name a game that makes a horrible mess of an IP?

Edited to add... Additional bonus question: is there an IP that you like that should totally be made into a board game (or into a good one, if it already has a cruddy licensed game)?

I've been starting to work through the new games I got from Essen, which is pleasing. Even starting to get back to some playtesting as well.

7   Deep Sea Adventure x2 - This may deserve a higher rating, it's a little gem for an ultralight push-your-luck game that has just enough decision making for our lunchtime group.
7   That's a Question! x2 - Played this with a couple of different groups and it went down really well both times, particularly when people got the hang of what makes for good questions.
7   Queendomino - I enjoyed this, but on balance I prefer its sibling Kingdomino.
8   Race for the Galaxy - Not played for too long, still great.
8   Calimala - Slightly unfairly I dropped a couple of friends who aren't used to Eurogames into a group to play this, and after some initial confusion, they got really into it and were all smiles by the end.
8   Codenames Duet - Wow, this is a great way to play Codenames with Miss B.
N/A   Unpublished Prototype x2 - One of mine and one of a friend's.

I am also slowly playing through my Essen loot. With the exception of Five Cucumbers and Memoarrr, all my plays were games I brought from Essen, some novelties and some used games. I am happy to say that I am not in a rush to play each of them once, but instead took the time to replay a bunch of them.
My best new game of the week was Abraca...what? which I like a lot, we had great fun with it in two different settings. I see this getting a number of replays in the future, it is certainly a keeper. Matryoshka, Perfect Hotel and Commissioner Victor will have to look for a new home, though. None of them is terrible, but they offer nothing I need.

 8   Neue Heimat

Busy week, but we managed to play a few very good games.

First up was Fish Cook. We played with the kids, and now that they are familiar with it, the game was much faster than it had been previously. The conceit, the economizing, the growing tension and a little bit of luck all make this tremendously fun. I may have under-rated this.

After the kids went to bed, we set up for Neue Heimat. I think this was the first time that we had talked through some of the possibilities of the game while playing, and it made for an even more interesting game. D decided he wanted to focus on simply stashing money away while not investing in properties, while N’s sister was busy trying to turn the screws by extending the lengths of the two rows she didn’t have properties on. Her play backfired, and I won in a blowout score. Have I also under-rated Neue Heimat? Seems so.

Our final game of the evening was Kraftwagen with four players. I can see why Hanibal likes this with more people as the turn order mechanism really shines and the game play becomes super cutthroat. D saw and took an opportunity in the third round to A) jump out way ahead on the race track and B) end the game with only two cars in the market. Both actions pushed him into the lead for the win with me close behind. Brilliant!

Top of the pile this week is an old favourite, that hasn't seen much play in recent years as it needs 4 or 5 to shine. However, a gaming evening with local friends proved to be a good opportunity to get it out. I didn't, in all honesty, explain it very well, but eventually the new players got the hang of it. Helena and I were certainly pleased to play it again after such a gap!

Princes of Florence x 1
Race for the Galaxy x 1
Kingdom Builder x 2
Le Havre: The Inland Port x 1
De Beer ist Los! x 1
7 Wonders x 1
Frank's Zoo x 1
All Creatures Big and Small Agricola x 1
6 Nimmt x 1
Colt Express x 1
Camel Cup x 1
Cafe International x 1
San Juan x 1
Coloretto x 1
Freibeuter x 1

The latter two were both new to Rebecca - she wasn't overly keen on Coloretto but really enjoyed Freibeuter (another game that hadn't been played for years) and came second by just 2 points (I had 196, she had 194, Helena had about 185).

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

9.6   Race for the Galaxy: Xeno Invasion

Well, the Little Wars convention has come and gone and my participation game of This Is Not a Test: Skull-Deep in the Dead went very well. Throughout the day we played three full games with a variety of players from novices to younger children as well as experienced gamers. It all seemed to go quite well and everyone enjoyed themselves. Interestingly, each scenario was a bit different with one group electing to fight off the undead from a central position (bad move - especially when weapons jam), another spreading to the four corners of the board and yet another fortifying the petrol station and using the cover there as a base to hold off the rad zombies. Anyway, a jolly good time was had by all. Here's some photos:

Above: Zombies approach from all sides - the red disc denoted a jammed weapon. Things look dire for Blue Peter

Above: Blue Peter is starting to be mobbed while the Peacekeeper officer uses his plama rifle to pot zombies at a distance

Above: The robot, Call Me Kenneth, comes to Blue Peter's aid

Above: Call Me Kenneth and Big Bad Bob make their stand in the petrol station

Also, more Chess with Little Fish the elder as well as a quick game of Race for the Galaxy: Xeno Invasion with Mrs Fish.

Other games related stuff: following Rob's positive write-up I found myself bidding on a copy of The Cousins' War in the Jack Vassel auction but being well and truly out bid by several other punters who have taken it to USD$80 or so!

Finally some Magic playing after over 6 months without any!!! My Magic playing friend came over for part of the weekend, so it was party games on the Saturday night, other games on the Sunday morning, then our fourth Magic player came over on the Sunday afternoon for a whole afternoon of Magic. Great fun, and I've definitely been missing it! It was nice to get some party gaming in again too - another thing I don't get very much of nowadays, just the odd Time's Up game every now and then.
