What particular game (war game, euro, anything) made you want to pursue this hobby?

Specifically, when did you discover that there was more to board games than Risk, Battleship, Monopoly, Clue, and all the rest of the "mainstream" games that you could find anywhere.

Please share.

Anyone who's read my other geeklist 1980: A Board Game Odyssey knows this is the one that set me on the road to to discovering that there was more to board games than Risk, Monopoly, Clue, etc.

Now I have more games than I know what to do with.

I had played this on the Xbox 360 Arcade back in 2007. I came across it again in physical form in 2012 and it opened up everything for me. I had't played games since I was younger and doing so i a whole new way (tile placement and map building) gave me a hugely different perspective on whats out here.

Feudal game got me interested in game design, although I didn't really see the possibilities of more abstract design until I played

When asking "What would Jesus do?", remember that flipping over tables and using a whip are within the realm of possibilities.

It kind of hard to pinpoint "exactly" what game turned me into a board gamer, as my mom and sisters played several games growing up (Risk, Boggle, Careers, etc.) but in the mid 80s I saw a copy of Scotland Yard in a local store, and asked for it for Christmas. My aunt got a copy of it for me, and I played it with my sisters and cousins. I was Mr. X.

I remember my heart racing with excitement, as they closed in...

So I credit Scotland Yard with being the game that turned me into a lifelong board gamer.

After managing to get over the fact that the cover art was a bit "uninspiring" I bought this when a game store had a closing down sale. Played it and then i was totally hooked.

Just wish the game store hadn't closed down.

Finding out about Gnostica made me pursue Looney Pyramids, which led to a wider interest in contemporary hobby gaming. I had not played boardgames (other than periodic Scrabble) since my teens.

In childhood, though, I was a very enthusiastic board gamer, playing games such as Feudal, Circus Maximus, and The Awful Green Things From Outer Space. But my earliest recollection of a board game to seize my attention powerfully was Which Witch?!

Probably this one which was introduced in 1949, the year of my conception. I am fairly certain that I was familiar with it by age 5, when so much formation has all ready taken place. The "eye candy" had a strong appeal!

I've always enjoyed playing games, including the mandatory family fun my parents made my siblings and i participate in while growing up.
We played a bit of everything.
LNoE reintroduced me to gaming about 5 years or so back and since then, I've been pretty obsessed.
Found a great group while working for the USAF in Germany, and have found some really awesome groups coming back to the states including the BYOBoardgame meetup group in Cincinnati that meets at Moerlein's Tap Room.
I'm glad I have a place to play, people to play with and games to get to the table!
