Games played at BGG 2017

This was my first year attending BGG Con. I went with almost no plans and no expectations other than to play a lot of games.
The show definitely did not disappoint! The library lived up to its reputation and extremely well run. The people running the show were very friendly and helpful.
But best of all was the gaming hall. There were several occasions where I did not have players for a game I was eager to try and I didn't have to wait 10 minutes after putting up a "players wanted" sign before I had a full table.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to next year!

I started off with Route 66 - an interesting twist on a worker placement game by designer Norv Brooks.

A friend picked this up at Essen and we played it almost every night of the con. While thin on story, it has some fun twists on the worker placement genre and the legacy genre.
My advice to you: Robots

I ran a few sessions of my recently published game. I even added a fun "secret" reward for con-goers who checked out the copy from the show library.

I had been wanting to try this worker placement game for awhile. We played thebasic game. It's good, but after playing Charterstone, I found it to be a little basic. I'd try it again.

I had backed this on KS but had yet to play it. I was disappointed with the core gameplay and how the items were used. It didn't quite pack the punch I was hoping it would.

I called this ""the cutest version of DungeonQuest I've ever played" - the game plays well and the bear meeples are great but this game is HARD! One of the players in our group got really mad at the game, I think he didn't realize how difficult it was going to be. I recommend it. It's hard but still worth playing.

I really like the original BatHotH. It might even be one of my favorite games. And I really like games with D&D theming. I figured this reimplementation would be a slam-dunk for me. I was sadly disappointed. I felt the game leaned too hard into the original game's worst aspect - the combat. I will give the game another try, but I think I'll save my money for BatHotH Legacy instead.

I played a demo and our group demolished the first two scenarios. Like in minutes. Even the demo'er was impressed.
I later met up with a friend who played it and I was intrigued by his wildly different account of the same game scenario. This one will get added to the collection.

This game looks amazing on the table. Many people stopped just to admire the papercraft ship. Sadly, the gameplay was thin. There are better detective games out there.

The core mechanic is intriguing but it felt like a one-trick pony. I might give it another try if I can play it in "advanced" mode.

I had played this before and had enjoyed it. This time, we didn't play a full session but it wasn't as entertaining this time around. I still want to continue my "other" game.

By the time I figured out how to play this, it was over. I didn't enjoy it but at least it was over quickly.

30 Minute MOBA is a quick card game by Jeremy Commandeur. It was fun but didn't feel as much like a MOBA as it did a tower defense game. With more work, it could be quite good.

Possibly my favorite game I played all week. Simple, fast, surprisingly deep and graphically appealling.

Presentation-wise, this is a slam dunk. Game-wise, not as much. We only played a two-player game. I'd be curious to see how it holds up with three and four.

I play tested my 2-player gunfighting game. My friend came up with an interesting mechanic that I will have to play test more.
Still working on that 4 player mode...

I played an interesting two-player game being developed by Pencil First games. That is all I think I am allowed to say about it... (other than I love the art and dislike the name)

I had seen this game in a friend's library so I decided to give it a try. Wowee! This game is a product of its times. Great miniatures... horrible gameplay. This one temporarily lost me "choosing rights" with my game group at the show.

Another game coming from Pencil First. A very nice tile-laying game that I quite enjoyed.

The best game about Elephant racing I've ever played. This game is just silly fun. It helps to have the right group playing - which fortunately I had.

I had never played this classic. Even though it is very much a game from the 1970's, it still captures the feel of a very light dungeon crawl. It was fun.

I had been intrigued by this game for awhile and it had been hard to find at retail, which is why the BGG library is such a great asset. After tracking it on the BGG library tool I finally managed to check it out.
What a convoluted mess. It suffers from poor graphic design and a confusing rulebook. This game has already been better implimented by Time Stories and 7th continent.

A quick-to-learn, quick-to-play tile laying game. I found it very enjoyable and I might have to pick it up.

I got pulled into a "live play" of this game at the Big Kid's booth. It's a nice simple worker placement but it's not going to unseat Stone Age or Charterstone in my opinion.

This time it's a time-travelling worker placement from Pencil First. I had played this game many time before (I know the designer) so it was interesting to see the changes in this new version. With a few tweaks, I think it might be ready for production!
