Last year about this time I posted my 2016 list so it's that time of year I can safely make my selections for 2017. It's also that time of year when we should expect a flurry of similar geeklists. Last year's list garnered plenty of positive thumb action, and tried to appease the "cult of the new" followers. This year lets add FOMOphobiacs and KS'ers to that list.

See my previous years lists:
- Ten from Sixteen - My top 10 favorite games released in 2016
- Ten from Fifteen - My top 10 favorite games released in 2015
- Ten from Fourteen- My top 10 favorite games released in 2014
- Ten from Thirteen- My top 10 favorite games released in 2013
- Ten from Twelve - My top 10 favorite games released in 2012

So this is my 6th year creating this list which, as usual, caters to the cult of the new of which I am an acolyte (or perhaps a Grand Master). Again, I've looked over my list of games from the past year and picked out the ones that have intrigued me the most through their themes, rules, innovative or evolved mechanics, game play, components, and outright fun! And please note that this list only contains games that were released in 2017.

Whereas last year I said 2016 was another fantastic year for games, I found 2017 to be just a so-so year for game. Of course that's not to say there weren't some excellent releases; there were. I did see a few trends in 2017. If anything, Kickstarter games continue to gum up the shelves and have generated a new category for bloated annoying emails announcing them and any of their updates. Playmats seem to be the in thing this year and co-op's still seem to be permeate the market. Wargames seemed to do well this year also with a number of great releases from GMT, Compass Games, Vento Nuovo, and others.

I've culled the games here from this list: A Plethora of Games: The Eclectic Collector's 2017 acquisitions

So without further ado, and in no particular order, here's my personal Top 10 club members for 2017.

And as always, YMMV so thumb em if you like em. Cheers. meeple

Hard to believe this just got released in February of this year. Given all the buzz, commentary, and how long it remained #1 on the hotness list makes me feel like it's been around a lot longer. There are so many good things I can say about this game, and so many things it does right, that it doesn't bear to mention any negatives. And this coming from someone who swore to never go down "legacy lane". My wife is still the #1 fan of this game in our household and is always trying to get it (back) to the table. For us, it's mostly two player game-play and when we win a scenario, it's always down to the wire and the last cards in hand before exhaustion.

Now don't get me wrong. There were plenty of other dungeon delvers to be had this year including Massive Darkness in which I'm heavily vested. But none seem to tell a story as well as this one.

Lets talk splendiferous Euro gaming where the cool plastic bits are just icing on an already great point-salad game with a main course of worker placement. The theme is awesome with a need to go back and forth between the past and present to ensure a successful future. There's lots of choices to be had in the game and a need balance or "pay back" what you've borrowed or suffer the consequence of losing. The game production was lavishly done and as I mentioned, the minis are both functional and beautiful.

I'm going with another solid medium to heavy-weight Euro here. Yes it's another point-salad game with worker placement (or rather movement). Still, there's something fun about building up your engine or movement strategy as it may be and deciding which route will get you the most points. As with Anachrony, this is another well produced game with clean rules and fancy bits if you got the "deluxe" version.

Okay, time for a Weuro. Despite the excellent 1754: Conquest – The French and Indian War getting released in February this year, this one just ups the tension a bit for the win over it. Maybe it's the Viking theme which is still going strong this year that did it for me. Still, for Weuro and Academy Games fans it's a win-win year. Of course all the KS extra plastic bits are just fluff on an already good game system, though I'll miss the wooden cubes used in their previous games (they went with little plastic figures in their stead). Anyway, good history, good fun, and good enough to make it into this list.

Okay blockheads, listen up. Vento Nuovo released two good block wargames this year, Leningrad '41 and this one. The mechanics in this is similar to Moscow '41 rather than its predecessor Waterloo 200. I'm going with this one over their Leningrad release because I'm glad to see the system applied to the Battle of Borodino which is a great slugfest for both players. Here's another one where you were able to get an extra-large playmat of the game board.

Tabletop tactics fans rejoice. GW has come up with a great tactical system and game that's even more fun than Gorechosen. The deckbuilding mechanics in this combined with the short play time make it a winner. Choose your objective cards, choose your upgrade cards, plan your strategy and hope for good dice rolls. The only thing you don't choose is your team which comes as a preset group of characters from a certain faction. I'm not even close to being a Warhammer Fanboy. In fact, I'm more of a WH40K fan if any when it comes to theme. Still, it's the fun game play and how you need to stick to your plan while dealing with your opponents agenda that make it fun. Entry price point isn't bad for a GW game with minis, and even cheaper if you buy it online. The minis are easy to assemble (no glue required though I did glue a few minor bits to ensure they don't come apart in battle) and great for the folks who like to paint them. I'm looking forward to more units and battlefields for this one.

Yes, the "deluxe" version with painted minis. Now I debated whether to choose this one or Dungeons & Dragons: Tomb of Annihilation Board Game ("deluxe" version with painted minis also of course) but decided D&DToA, though good, was more of the same with some improvements to its tried and true system. This one gives me big beefy minis fighting it out over territory using special abilities and buckets of dice. I particularly like the system where your abilities depend on the previous cards you've played. Ameritrash heaven in 2017.

This one, incorporating deck-building and CDG mechanics seemed to arrive without much fanfare and has been certainly flying under the RADAR of late. Now when it comes to this year's CDG, I did consider Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62, the latest iteration in the COIN series, but overall found the mechanics as well as the theme of this one more interesting. And though you can play this one with 4, as with CT it plays well with just 2.

This or Rayguns and Rocketships. Wastlands or space. Post-apocalyptic or campy retro spaceship theme. Neither are co-ops and both involve conflict. Tough choice. Both are fun but I'm going to give it to Wasteland because Rockets took 4 pages of FAQ to answer stuff that should have been in the rulebook.

Wow, I'm going with a sports game for #10 and it was a tough choice between this and The Football Game. So for the first time an American football game wins out over just football (aka Soccer) for me. Where TFG is a great party game, I like the tactical nature and control offered by Techno Bowl as well as the one-on-one aspects. So lots of teams, lots of choices, lots of dice rolling. Yes, for a party game I'd go with TFG this year but this one hits the streamline spot for me.
