My wife and I live on the west coast (US) and have a friend on the east coast. We've been getting together electronically every month to play board games. We generally have a camera (an iPad bungee-corded to a music stand) pointing at our board so our friend can see it; for many games he also echoes the game state with his own copy.

Some required attributes:

* No drawing of hidden cards from a shared deck, as there's no way to maintain the decks. If cards are public, one side can maintain the deck and the other can find the appropriate cards as they appear. If each side draws from their own decks, there's no problem.
* No tiny writing on the board. (Writing on the cards is probably okay if you each have a copy.)

This is a list of what we've played successfully. If you have other suggestions, please submit them as list comments.

We have fond memories of the first edition from when we all lived in flyover country. (Hiding a giant "Local Rumors" token in each other's domiciles became a running gag.) We all agree that the third edition is the best so far.

Our friend has an interest in history, my wife has a Master's Degree in it, and this is the name of the college where I teach (computer science).

This is our favorite co-op. The components are large enough that this works without an echoing copy of the game.

This definitely requires replicating the board on both ends (unless you have a very high-resolution video feed), but it works. Near the end of our first game, the phone I was using for the board camera died, but we were able to finish on audio alone. (We had memorized the names of the buildings by then.)

Being a conversational game, this works extremely well. You don't need a camera pointed at the board because there isn't one. Having a copy on each end of the connection means that several players can access the map, directory, newspapers, etc. at the same time.
