Setting up a geeklist for the 1 Player Guild's People's Choice Top 100 Solo Games seems to be the thing to do this year, so here I am. I would like to actually keep up with this thing and have it be a running and consistently updated list of my top solo games as I play more games (and get in more plays of those already on the list). We'll see how I do with that long-term, but that is the goal.

Like everyone else, I also have a few games that I suspect might have made the list if I'd been able to get a few more plays (or any plays at all) in before the deadline. I have decided I'll mention those here:

Trickerion: Legends of Illusion-I've been using the automa solo mode found here.

ComancherĂa: The Rise and Fall of the Comanche Empire-I bought this in early August and had great intentions of getting it played. Then our son was unexpectedly born a month early on August 24th. I haven't had the hours available to get this bear learned since then.

Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62-I've played through the learning game in the playbook, but I haven't gotten into it more than that.

Anyway, on to the list!

Mage Knight has been my #1 each year I've submitted my top 20 in the people's choice, but this year Gloomhaven has dethroned it to the point that Gloomhaven replaced virtually all my plays of Mage Knight this year. If I'm wanting a long solo game in which I feel like I'm on an adventure, Gloomhaven wins because it has the one thing I always missed in Mage Knight: A campaign in which my character gets to keep all the cool cards and abilities he acquires from game to game.

Gloomhaven is really about everything I could possibly want in a solo game. It has great strategic and tactical decisions, a fun theme, a campaign, and characters leveling up. Just writing about this game makes me want to pull it out and play it.

This is my highest game that has no chance at making it on the people's choice. I may be the only person on the planet who feels this way, but I think this game is great. I've only ever played it solo, and I've never been disappointed. I love drafting a the beginning to make my player deck. This game has so many cards in the common pool, but you only draft 8 cards to add to your starting deck each game. Due to this, you have almost endless variety of starting combos and new cards from game to game. Finding the best synergies and exploiting them as you battle a continual onslaught of enemies is fantastic. It gives me a feeling similar to the deck construction in LOTR: LCG, but the whole game (including constructing your deck) takes like 30-45 minutes. I highly recommend it.

There is a solo automa variant I discovered only a few months ago in the forums, and I love it. Full disclosure, I love this game with multiple players. It is absolutely one of my favorites, and I think the automa does a pretty good job of creating an experience similar to playing with others. It always seems to grab the cattle card or worker that I was planning on snagging on my next turn. I've never actually won this game solo, but I love playing it and trying new strategies to finally take down that darn automa, Brisco.

I picked up this and the expansion earlier this year, and I love the quick, thinking resource conversion in this one. I don't really care a ton about the story elements (maybe they get more engaging, but so far the stories don't do much for me). I do, however, love that it creates scenarios with different goals for me to attempt to accomplish. It makes for a lot more variety in the game. Basically any solo game with euro elements (resource conversion, resource management, economic elements, etc.) and a win/loss condition is going to rate pretty well with me. When you throw in that this one can be played on a work night in 30-45 minutes after my son has gone to sleep for the night, it is amazing.

Yeah, remember that thing I said under Oh My Goods! about solo euros with a win/loss condition? I love it here too, and I also get the fun of multi-use cards. I have played the game with the standard solo rules included in the box, but I actually prefer it with the solo automa variant I found in the forums. With the automa it vaults from a solo game that would probably rank in the 15-20 range to one of my top 5.

Mage Knight is an amazing solo game. It was the first "big" solo game that I really got into after my introduction with things like Friday and Onrim. It is still an amazing game, but, with Gloomhaven around, I find myself reaching for it less and less often. I try to keep a fairly small collection, so I've actually considered trading Mage Knight away since I'm not getting it played much. I just can't bring myself to do it. It is just too good. It has fallen slightly for me as I've played it less, but I still think it is a great game and probably deserving of a top 5 ranking (though it just misses that mark for me).

I recently posted about this game on SGOYT for November. I had this game 2 years ago and I loved everything about it (theme, mechanisms, and deck construction) except for one thing that ruined the game for me. I refused to play two-handed and I didn't like the one deck experience in the game. I picked it up again recently and I've jumped in with both feet. I have been playing two-handed and loving it. The interaction between the two decks opens up so many more possibilities during the game. This game is awesome, and I can't wait to pick up more content for it. The only negative about this game is the look I'll get from my wife when I buy the adventure packs, haha.

This one has so many great decisions in it. Balancing all the different parts of the game and knowing which actions to take at different points to keep your engine rolling and the points coming in is a blast. The basic actions you take are simple, but there is so much to consider each game. When I'm done with this one my head hurts in the best possible way. The only slight negative on this one is that I don't love Lacerda's system of different objectives for reaching different levels of victory. It isn't my favorite win/loss condition in solo games, but it still works well. And besides, the mechanisms and decisions are such a blast, I think I'd like this one even without a win/loss condition.

I love this game because it is essentially mini-Mage Knight for me. I don't get the adventure feeling that I do from Mage Knight (in fact the theme is basically nonexistent for me in this game), but I do get the same every hand is a puzzle feeling from the card play in this one. Plus, I can break this one out and play it in a much shorter amount of time than Mage Knight. This is just another great, thinky card game.

Another fantastic card game. I hate the bot in this game. I mean, I love how the bot functions as an opponent in the game, but that thing is a huge jerk. It never lets me win. Sometimes it even teases me by letting me think I have a chance only to devastate me with soul crushing consume actions. This is another game I can pull of the shelf and play quickly but get the satisfying mental exercise of a much longer game. I am actually a little surprised this game didn't end up higher for me. The truth is, after my top 2, I could make a case for any of the next 7 games (#s 3-10) to be placed #3. But ultimately, even though I could make a case for Race, I just like it a little less than the games ranked ahead of it.

I've only gotten a chance to play this a couple times. I love sports and grew up playing a lot of sports management video games. I've always dreamed of a really solid sports management board game about baseball, football or basketball. Soccer wasn't really even on my radar. I haven't ever played soccer, watched soccer, or really even had any interest in soccer. I love this game despite zero interest in soccer. I love the decisions you get to make about building your team, hiring coaches, setting up TV contracts, and scheduling friendlies. There is a ton of luck involved in the match resolution, which I actually really like. It is true to the theme. My job as the general manager is to acquire the best combination of coaches and talent, but I don't really have any control over the actual performance in games. This game is slightly too long for the amount of strategy involved, but the decisions and theme hit the mark enough that I don't care.

I love this game for the moments when I'm looking for a worker placement game that I can get played in 30 minutes. It doesn't have super deep strategy, but there are some good decisions to make. I love having the captains to play against in the solo game, and they do create a pretty tense game most of the time. I wish the AI flowcharts had been explained better in the rulebook and just generally been a little clearer. The first couple times I played solo that was a huge headache, but, once I got the hang of it, the games run really smoothly.

This is yet another quick, solo euro with some interesting tactical and strategic decisions. Shocking, right? I love finding the synergies between the rooms in this game to maximize your point scoring engine. I also love that it is a game that has a fair bit of thinking involved and I can set it up and play in short order after my son has gone to bed (that is a common theme for a lot of these games). I wish that there was some sort of AI opponent rather than what is essentially a beat your high score game. The win/loss condition of a set number of points is enough to satisfy me since I enjoy the decisions and mechanisms in the game.

Based on my gaming history, I should not like this game. I don't enjoy area control/majority much at all. I don't have much interest in historical conflict games. I don't play many solo games that take more than an hour or two. But I really enjoy this game! If I'm playing this one, I'm likely setting it up and playing the game over the course of a few days. And while I don't love area control/majority most of the time, I enjoy it a lot more against these bots than I do against others. I love the decisions that happen every turn in this game. Do I take the event? Do I take an operation and special activity even though that will give one of the other factions a chance to take the event? Do I take just an operation to limit what the other factions can do? Do I pass because I see a really juicy event coming up on the next card? I loving thinking through all my options and trying to come up with the best plan. Heck, I even enjoyed this enough that it got me to watch a couple fascinating documentaries about the Cuban Revolution. This game has caused me to want to explore more GMT titles and more historical conflict games in general.

This is where solo gaming started for me. I walked in to TableTop Game & Hobby in Overland Park, KS shortly after moving to Kansas City looking for an inexpensive game I could pick up. I saw this little gem and was excited about the idea of being able to play on my own at my apartment (and I liked the price). I probably played it 10 times the first day or two that I had it. There are definitely games I enjoy more than Friday these days, but I still like to pull this one out fairly regularly. I like it as a quick little deck-building game with some decent strategy.

I like this game quite a bit better multiplayer but it is still a fun game with the solo ai variant in the forums. I really enjoy balancing the two economies in the game (money and information). I also really like the competition to sell goods in the retail markets. Again, this one plays into my love of economic and management games, though the win condition is actually how well you've built up your building. It just loses some of the competition for worker placement spots in the 2 player game anyway and that is the same case in the solo variant. It is a fairly loose game, but I still enjoy trying to maximize my efficiency in the game.

This is my go to game if I'm just looking at something to play to relax for 10 or 15 minutes. You can literally play this twice in that amount of time. There isn't a ton of strategy or great decisions in the game, but I just enjoy it. The art is great, and the game is perfect for a quick little palate cleanser after a longer game or a quick game to get me in the gaming mood before jumping into something bigger. I could see this one losing something over time and falling off the list, but, for now, it just sneaks in to the top 20.

This one has a fun theme and a ton of different combinations of heroes, villains, and environments. It has fallen in my estimation a little bit because it is such a pain to keep up with all the bookkeeping in the game, but I still enjoy it. Also, it runs a little longer than is warranted by the amount of strategy in it, but I like trying to find the way the heroes work together in each game.

Valley of the Kings is a nice deck-building game in a tiny package. I do prefer it multiplayer, but the solo game is fun. I don't use the solo rules in the box. Instead, I play with a dummy player variant from the forums. It does quite recreate the multiplayer game but does let me have fun using combos in the game. And the ai is challenging if you adjust the difficulty to harder level. I also really enjoy the balance between keeping the powerful cards in your hand vs. entombing them for the points at the end of the game.

This is the second solo game I picked up and played. It is barely on the list at this point, but I still enjoy getting it played from time to time. It really makes for an enjoyable puzzle when played with a bunch of expansions, but it falls pretty flat at this point without them. I still really enjoy the game, but, over the years, I've found a number of other short games with quite a bit more going on that I'd rather play. However, whether it is nostalgia or the enjoyment of a simple game that I know the rules for in my sleep, I enjoy pulling this one out ever couple months and giving it a go.
