Hello friends! For the final time this year, it's time to ask the eternal question: What wargames are on your table this month? As usual, it doesn't matter if it's solo or opposed, online or face-to-face, hex & counter or cubes & cards. If you can crush your enemies, we want to hear about it.

According to the aggregator we have played 1530 games between us so far this year. Not bad, not bad at all. High fives all round. This list is still my favourite part of BGG, so many thanks to you all for continuing to make it so rad.

Now, get off my lawn.

I picked up a few battalions and sorted my British Army. It's time for the 95th Rifles to capture that Napoleonic Eagle.

Through two conferences as Churchill and have successfully kept the Mediterranean Front ahead of schedule while the Eastern Front lags badly. Had a hand of absolute trash last conference, but this one looks better and I think we can make real progress in both Europe and Asia.

Continuing with my Frederick theme I'm off to the First Silesian War. I am curious about this game as there are some elements that are found in the Series: Napoleonic 20 (Victory Point Games) series but things that are adjusted for 18th Century Warfare.

The rules were very easy to pick up on with little questions (thus far) so we'll see how it plays.

Not sure where to post this.

But I love Hollandspiele Games. They always release their titles in regular box editions and on wargmaevault.com as PnPs. I am a glutton for punishment, so I always go for the PnP. I just completed making this Roman political control strategy game. Is this a wargame? No. But it has Roman Legion counters in it, and if you are lucky you can have your rivals murdered, so there is that. Easy rules, but very deep. Rulebook is what 8 pages? But it's kind of like a COIN game in the sense the rules are easy, but you end up looking at your 7 or 8 action possibilities and wonder "what the hell do I do now?" So, you take a dart and throw it in the dark. And off you go.

Very unique, not another game out there like it.

I've pulled this oldie out for some solo buccaneering. The solo game in this (AH version) is very good and challenging as hell. I had three games on Saturday. Some pirates went down to storms. One died in port in a plague. Others were killed by their own men.

As for my pirate, Captain Blood - once killed by an injury sustained in battle with a King's Commissioner. Once murdered by his own crew. Once went down with the ship after a barrage from another King's Commissioner.

Really, Pirate Life isn't all it's cracked up to be.

edit: wargame? Well, it's Berg, it's AH, and you can attack ports so close enough. An honorary wargame.

Been playing the Main event in a PBEM.

Germany has conquered France and is invading the Soviets.
Italy stayed neutral and Turkey joined the Communists.

The UK knocked the Greeks out of the fight with a surprise strike on Athens.

The USA is starting to build up its forces and it is summer of 1942.
I guess Germany has one more round to push the Soviets back and buy time before the inevitable slow retreat in 1943-1945.

In preparation for a pbem game of the main event, old pal Dan and I went through training scenario 1 on Vassal/Skype.

He took the Germans and it didn't last long. I was hoping to take it into a second month but the last unit defending Warsaw rolled abysmally and it was all over in the blink of an eye.

He is learning the game and I'm trying to remember it so these learning scenarios are pretty handy. Hopefully we'll do the next couple before Christmas and then start the campaign in the new year.

BATTLE OF NIHRIYA
Assyrians v. Hittites
ca. 1250 BC

In the wake of the collapse of the Mitanni empire, the Assyrian empire encroached northward. Hatti, land of the Hittites, was alarmed by the threat to the south. A Hittite army under King Tudhaliya IV moved to confront the latest Assyrian incursion, led by King Tukulti-Ninurta I.

From gallery of DerTroof

From gallery of DerTroof
From gallery of DerTroof

The Assyrians have advantages in leadership and troop quality, while the Hittites have more chariots. Tukulti-Ninurta’s plan is to push forward with his powerful infantry in the center, while heavy (three-man crews, javelin-armed) and light (two-man crews, composite bow-armed) chariot wings support on the left and right flanks respectively. He and his Royal Guard shall act as a reserve.

From gallery of DerTroof

Tudhaliya realizes his army cannot last long in a straight-up slugfest with the invaders. To use his greater mobility to best advantage he daringly leads his Royal (heavy) charioteers on a flanking maneuver through the seam between the Assyrian left wing heavy chariots and the slower infantry. Their objective: Tukulti-Ninurta himself.

From gallery of DerTroof

Tudhaliya’s attempted coup de main is soon detected by the Assyrians - which doesn’t mean they can stop it. The Assyrian infantry is diverted from its original task and pushes left - forcing Tudhaliya’s flanking column wider and buying time for Tukulti-Ninurta’s Royal Guard to deploy its chariots. They won't have to wait for mere mop-up duties in this battle!

On the Hittite rear right, another heavy chariot wing disengages after a brief clash with the Assyrian heavies, to support Tudhaliya. The Hittites are now being betting everything on killing or capturing the Assyrian king.

From gallery of DerTroof

Meanwhile, across the field, the Assyrian light chariots are chewing up their Hittite counterparts. Assyrian runner infantry, which the Hittites lack, provides a decisive advantage in this encounter.

On the other flank the Hittite infantry must now fend off the Assyrian heavies unsupported. They fight desperately to protect Tudhaliya’s standard and the growing mass of broken units seeking to rally around it.

From gallery of DerTroof

The Assyrian king, Tukulti-Ninurta, no coward, personally leads his elite Guards chariots against Tudhaliya once he finally clears the Assyrian infantry screen. The two kings and their cohorts collide head on.

From gallery of DerTroof

The battle rages on three fronts. The light chariot struggle is a decisive victory for the Assyrians, who move on to attack the Hittite standard, inflicting many more casualties among the routed masses crowding there. On the other flank the Assyrian heavy chariots surround and grind down the Hittite infantry.

From gallery of DerTroof

But Tudhaliya’s gambit may still succeed. In the melee of kings’ guards Tukulti-Ninurta is wounded, then he and his retainers are forced to withdraw to his standard. After pausing to regroup and replenish their missiles, Tudhaliya’s chariots pursue. In the next melee Tukulti-Ninurta is felled by a javelin, this time fatally. Yet his standard is successfully defended.

On the other end of the battlefield, the Hittites are being slaughtered around Tudhaliya’s standard, with their king nowhere in sight. The Hittite losses here are simply too great - survivors begin to flee the field. The Assyrians, despite losing their king (a fact which most of them would be as yet unaware), have won the day.

From gallery of DerTroof
From gallery of DerTroof

ASSYRIAN VICTORY
Rout Points:
ASSYRIANS 59/80
HITTITES 99/75

It is a hollow victory. Assyria’s king is dead and his army too damaged to continue the campaign in any case. The two ancient superpowers will strike an uneasy peace. Hatti shall soon face other challengers, including the ferocious Sea Peoples. The Assyrians will turn their attentions south, towards Babylon.

I played a solo game of this last weekend. Finished it last night. Took about 3 hrs. I have got to the stage in life, it seems, that I need small quick wargames because the rest of life demands it. I don't like that but there it is.

I do still have the cool ftf thing at Steve's every week but that is 2 hours max. Steve is under a lot of pressure so he can't play for long in big sessions. He can't stay up too late.

Anyway, this game was a lot of fun. I know the Blue and Gray rules like I know the words to the Lord's Prayer. Repetition is the best way to learn...

This game is your basic B+G but is differentiated by a lot of special rules for unit activations. This battle included many strange command decisions, logistical problems, badly trained troops etc.

I thought these rules would confuse me but they are all handily written on the turn track for reinforcements. I had also read that the CSA cannot win this. Well, allowing for Sunday afternoon drunken solitaire play, my CSA here pulled off a narrow win.

Final VP scores were CSA 128, USA 126. Incredibly close CSA marginal Victory.

This was mainly because the CSA stopped the Union getting over Bakers Creek and exiting any units towards Vicksburg. But, they suffered massive casualties doing this. Also, they could not exit many units back to Vicksburg either,

A fun game. The special rules and the different units in this one were very interesting. Also, a learning game in my continued ACW education.

Here is the end position.

After having removed all the dust, old spots and things that probably not should be named from this thrift store item I started out the day before yesterday. So far so good, the Germans have taken Clervaux St Vith and Martelange in addition to some of the other towns, and are now laying siege to Malmedy, Bastogne and Houffalize. It's december the 20th, and more German troops are coming in from the east. I think it will need some good die rolling for the Americans to hold until relieved.

for pointing out an important oversight on my part. I got those French supply units scootched up pronto!

Below is the situation after two more turns, so it is now Turn 6, Late October. Bernadotte is running free in the north but Russian cavalry has been spotted in the vicinity and he is woefully far from home. Not likely going to pull off the coupe de main on Prague that he had wanted.

Mack has gathered the Austrians in the fortress at Braunau. Soult has gathered a French army of similar strength to the southwest. Napoleon is moving up, but right now the French plan to bypass Braunau and drive on Vienna. Murat will likely be charged with either a full-on siege of Braunau or at least a cordon. Ol' Nappy would love to keep Mack bottled up in Braunau and out of the way if he can.

Just bought and put together this PnP. It reminds me of a quicker and smaller Warfighter game. Probably not going to be as interesting as Warfighter--I love that game. But so far, I'm liking Rifles.

played 2nd edition last night - I forget final score but the Russians were able to get into Germany before the Allies in an ill-conceived "gee whiz I guess we'll support you this time" move by the UK and USA. Good fun regardless! Russians won with a spread of about 12 points from first to last.

I like a good solo wargame so I have set up Thunder in the Ozarks to poke around for the next few days.

I've played solo once before and this time it's taking quite a different path than previousyl. In the first game, the rebels easily smashed through the Union on the Leetown map, grabbed the town and setting off a swaggering brawl that went on until both sides were punch-drunk and wrecked. this time, the Union line above the town is holding on and the uncoordinated rebs are bouncing off them.

Over at Elkhorn Tavern, previosly Price was shot and his replacement was incapable of getting his rebel brigades moving through the woods and trees. This time, Price (who isn't much better than his subordinate) is doing the business. The Missouri State Guard have swung around the Union right flank and hit Dodge's brigade. The flank look like it's about to go. Another brigade is rushing up to steady things but I don't know if they will get there in time. The rest of the division is descending on the rest of the cobbled-together Union line.
