Joining the WWers who have made top 100 lists, I'm going to add mine to the pot. I imagine I have wildly different opinions than some, and I've not done this sort of ranking system before (using PubMeeple) so we'll see how it goes.

#100: History of the World

An oldie but a goodie. This is the go-to game for a Risk-like experience without it being as horrible as Risk. It still takes forever, but I find it more fun for a number of reasons. For one, no one is ever eliminated from the game. Secondly, there is a mild catch-up mechanism that keeps everyone in the running for winning. And third, it's interesting to see each round how each person makes the most of what they have.

The main drawback of this game is that it can all depend on what everyone gets in the last round. I've seen people who were losing end up with one of the European powers and win it all, and I've crippled someone with--of all things--the United States.

Still, it's a great experience to play once or twice a year, especially if you don't have to teach it.

#99: One Night Ultimate Werewolf

As someone who came here for werewolf, this might seem a bit low. But this isn't really werewolf. It's a fast-paced version of it that doesn't really give much time for thought. My experience with the game is that it normally devolves down to everyone declaring what they are, and the wolves eventually getting outed because they can't come up with a good enough story. Even with a tanner and some sort of aux in there, it's very hard for the wolves to win, and it seems like luck for them to have a proper claim. Probably because most people are special in this game.

It's also difficult to play this in public settings, as the need to hear the (often way too quiet) app is paramount.

It's a fun-enough pasttime, but not something I play all that often.

I'm actually surprised to see this one so far down, as it seems to be the standard "we have 5+ players and people don't want to split up" game in groups. That said, I feel like I've played the original game to death, which keeps it from being too high. I need at least one expansion (usually Leaders) included to make it interesting for me. Especially if I end up with *yawn* Giza.

I've seen a fair amount of hate for this one, but seeing as how I like deck-builders so much, the original one has to go somewhere on my list. I like playing this one on occasion, especially if it's with someone else's set and they have a ton of expansions (myself, I only got 3 or 4 before I decided to stop.)

The main sticking point with this one is the almost non-existent, boring theme. I almost feel like they were trying to capture the Euro market, so they put in a bunch of buildings and European stuff, with little thought of how things were actually going to work. I mean, sure, a Witch would curse you, but what's the explanation for dumping all your useless trash at a Chapel?

A simple game, but sometimes you want to play a simple game. Or you need to teach a new player how drafting works.

This version fixes the main problem with the original version, which is that it was always the same. There's a nice variety of cards here, which leads to changing strategies. This is a game I will never own, however, because the insert is designed for sitting the game on a shelf somewhere and never moving it, as opposed to throwing it in the back of my car like I do.

The first game on my list that I consider a 'pure euro'. I tend to not like pure Euros as much, because their themes are so dry, and while they are very strategic, I seldom ever feel like playing them again after the first time.

This game alleviates that somewhat by having an interesting theme (it's not all about gathering resources in some ancient European city whose name I've never heard of), the uniqueness of the wheels, and the variety of strategies. It can be incredibly frustrating, though, when the wheels don't shift in your favor and you're stuck with sub-optimal plays.

These 4X games should be higher on my list, really. The problem is I almost never get to play them, because they take so long. That, and after a while most of them feel the same.

That said, this is one of my favorites, because of how upgrading your ships work, and the uniqueness of some of the mechanics.

I do feel like it can rely on luck of positioning, though. The last time I played this one, I managed to 'carve out' a galaxy around me that had only one path in, and then just did ridiculous amounts of research in my safe corner of the universe to win. It shouldn't be that easy to break this game.

A decent way to pass the time until an actual game gets started.
Or when it's 3am and you don't have the mental capacity for other games.

I don't think I've ever actually played this one with actual points or end-game conditions, and usually I hate games like that (Apples to Apples, for example.) But the answers are relatively recent, so the things I'm guessing don't feel dry and old-school. And the collaborative nature of how I usually see it played has a feel-good aspect to it. As with most games like this, though, I prefer giving clues to guessing them.

One of the many 'Evolution' games on the market, this is the one you play when you want to go in for the long haul. I've seen games of this always go over 2 hours, and usually approaching 3 or 4.

Oddly enough, one of the things that makes me put this game lower than others is the production values. The cheap little cardboard chits don't really do it for me, especially for a game I'm going to be playing a while.

It's also a game that swings heavily on who attacks who, such that negotiation and whining become legitimate strategies, which seems odd for a game about animals that can't actually talk. As such, it can suffer from the typical, "Person in second place that people didn't target ends up winning."

Also, I can get a similar experience from other evolution games that aren't 3 hours long or cheap-looking.

Probably my favorite of the 'tableau deckbuilders', mostly because of the app. I do a lot of time-wasting with this on my phone while waiting for other things, repeatedly kicking the computers' butts.

My problem with tableau deckbuilders is that a lot of the game can feel based on luck, where the card you really want shows up right when you can't buy it, and someone else snatches it up before you can. But hey, at least this game doesn't commit the sin of having bosses, which completely ruins other such games (DC Deckbuilder, for example) by guaranteeing a snowball effect.

For when you want to trick someone into playing Stratego.

I've only played this a few times, and I enjoyed it, though I wonder if it was because I was playing Sauron each time. It seems really tricky for the 'good guys' to win, though perhaps two experienced players make it more even.

Moving on to the tile-laying category, I prefer this game to things like Carcaissone because you can focus on your own stuff instead of competing with other people constantly. The selling mechanic is pretty unique, as well. Honestly, I consider this a relaxing game for when I want to play a game pseudo-solo, but still want a bit of player interaction.

One of those games that gets a significant boost from its theme,
because I loved the show.

I played it recently, and while I did enjoy it, I'd forgotten how luck-based it was. Though you can mitigate a lot of the rolling, sometimes it can get really frustrating when you have absolutely no chance of winning an encounter because you don't have a specific card. It's another one of those games that I like to play every few years, but not too frequently.

A poor man's Artemis.

While this game is a great experience, and I enjoy while playing, I just don't know how much longevity it has. I've never gotten the chance to play with really experienced people, and I feel the difference would be really stark. For example, I once played with a captain who was used to playing engineer, and it made a huge difference because he knew exactly the moves to limit breaking down.

Because it's such a social game, I think this is best with 5 or 7 people you know, which kind of limits the opportunities when it will come to the table. Especially since some people will want to play very specific roles. I remember vividly when I first tried this out, and after playing their 'primary choice' and 'secondary choice' roles, we did a third game where people played their 'tertiary choice'. While it was hilarious in hindsight seeing everybody go, "OH MY GOD YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!!!", I don't imagine I'd want to go through that experience again.

My standard go-to game for 6-8 people, it's just a bunch of light fun for everyone involved. Yes, it sucks when you get targeted for no good reason, but the team aspect limits that to some extent. The main drawback of this game is that when someone goes out really early, they're sitting there for 40 minutes with nothing to do.

It also requires that the people who know the game really well help point out things that others might not realize: like when Daniel is about to get the holy items he needs to win.

Overall, though, it's a fun game that is extremely easy to teach and play, and leads to fun stories afterwards.

Having wildly different experiences based off what role you get at the start really improves a game's longevity for me.

So while I won't go out of my way to play this game, I'll likely enjoy it while I'm actually playing it.

I love dungeon-crawl type games, and variable player powers, so this one should be higher. But my problem with this game is that it seems to take too long for how simple it is, and some of the rules just don't make sense thematically. Also, it's ridiculously luck-based, where both monster spawns and dice rolls will decide if you win or lose most of the game, as opposed to actual strategic decisions.

I hear that I'll like Black Plague more, but I've yet to get a chance to try it.

Dice games usually hate me, which limits my enjoyment of them.
But this one gives you so many options for what to do, that I feel like strategic thinking plays just as an important a role as the actual rolls of the dice. There's a little bit of take-that involved, which is also hindering, but despite all that I just plain enjoy playing, despite its flaws.

Another game that likely gets this high simply because every faction just plays so damn differently. The mechanics and gameplay are very balanced and well thought out, and I don't remember there being any dice involved in this at all, so it's all up to you. The only place where this suffers is that it's another game where the winner is decided by who attacks who, so it requires too much social negotiation to win.

Years ago, this game probably would have been in my top ten. Unfortunately, it suffered from overabundance of play. When it first came out, everyone wanted to play it at least once a week, so I eventually just grew tired of it. I'll still play it on occasion, but it's lost a lot of its magic.

It's still a great game, of course. Aside from me overplaying it, the only other flaw I can think of is that the theme can feel pasted on. Most people barely read what their quests actually are, and it's hard to imagine the cubes you're trading in as being warriors, wizards, and the like, instead of 'oranges' or 'purples'.

Still, if you want to teach someone worker placement, this is a great game to do it with.

This one is just fun to play, even if I don't know how well anyone can get 'better' at it. Even if you're a superb liar, you might find your bag checked because of outside factors--like the sheriff having just gotten duped by someone else. I suppose if you had an insane memory for what people picked up, you could figure out what face-down cards they likely have, but that feels like it would be too much work.

Similar to Concept, this is one of those games that I enjoy playing just to pass the time, especially if it's with people I know and like. I refuse to use the actual cards (at least for myself), because that leads to more boring pictures. I also like to be a jackass to the person I'm passing to, forcing them to draw things like, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" or "Self-affirmation", just to see where things go from there.

This game surprised me when I first played it. It looked like a dinky little low-strategy game, but the unique scoring mechanic really sells it. Having to help out both of your partners, but keep them relatively even, makes for a lot of interesting choices over the course of the game. I do wonder if every building type is balanced, though, score-wise.

Overall, though, a great game to play with a high number of people,
since the player count doesn't increase the length at all.

While this is a good game, my opinion of it is slightly soured by what I would consider false advertising. The setting looks fantastic,
and with mechs involved you think it's going to be a unique wargame.
But as anyone who has played it knows, your mechs do a lot more 'worker carrying' than they do actual fighting. In fact, I've never seen more than two combats occur in the an entire game. This, combined with the absolute massive hype over it, left me a little disappointed after playing.

Still a good game, but not as incredible as some people make it out to be.

#76: Patchworks

Two player games are in a weird spot. Most games aren't optimised for two, and those that are, I often can't help but wonder if I wouldn't be having more fun if more people were involved.

Thankfully, patchwork is extremely easy to pick up and play, so it works well as a game to play while waiting for other people to finish another game. And yet, it has a decent amount of strategy involved. I also tend to do decently at it, since it's spacially-oriented. I'm also obsessive enough to always get the 7x7 tile every time I play, even if I don't win.
