Chineham Board Gamers "private" tool please feel free to plagiarize and to leave comments, but please don't thumb entries unless you are a Guild Member ('cos it screws up the Thumb Counts that are the basis of the "tool"). Thanks.

Every gamer that has been in the hobby for a while and that is one of their gaming circle's "game buyers" has a shelf of shame. I'm sure they do; I know that I do.

You know what I mean: that shelf (real or virtual) where those games that you bought in good faith - but have yet to play - live. Games that you honestly thought you'd enjoy playing, games that were deemed worthy of a place in your collection. And yet, for whatever reason, they remain unplayed, perhaps even still unpunched, or even - Heaven forefend - still in shrink

Let us collectively resolve that in 2018 we will reduce the number of games that we have on our shelves of shame (while acknowledging that we will, of course, be adding new games to the shelf with acquisitions made during the year). Let's at least reduce the average time that a game spends on the shelf before being reassigned to keep, trade or bin.

If you are a member of Chineham Board Gamers please feel free to add games from your shelves of shame that you would like to get played in 2018. Feel free to add commentary about why you acquired the game, why you haven't played it and anything that you feel might entice your fellow guild members to play them.

Please show your willingness to help get a game played at a CBG session by thumbing its entry in this list. I'll add the most thumbed games (assuming that any get thumbed at all - after all, there's some reason that they are unplayed) to the "game request" thread that Andy spins up each month. Hopefully that'll raise their visibility and they'll get to the table.

Once a game has been played please indicate this by updating your entry for the game. Please use the following format:

Played on: <DatePlayed>

You can copy this text Played on: <DatePlayed> and paste it into the GeekList item. This will ensure that the game drops to the bottom of the priority and some other games might get played too!

Let's make 2018 the year we let those games "feel the love" (and maybe free up some shelf space for new games ).

I love Vital Lacerda's designs (CO2 remains a firm favourite and The Gallerist is, quite simply, amazing).

This one pits up to four potential factory managers against each other in an attempt to run an efficient automobile manufacturing plant while vying for the approval of Sandra the factory manager, in the hope of a promotion.

You have to manage Testing and Innovation, Design, Logistics, Factory Administration and of course the all important Assembly Line. You have to manage the output of those areas while improving your skills in them. You also attend several meetings of the "senior leadership team" to present what you've done to date and propose directions for the future - hoping that recognition here will further improve your chances of promotion.

A game by the designer of Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on a Cursed Island (which is amongst the best of co-op games). Robinson Crusoe is a game dripping with theme and hard choices, a game that really feels like a struggle to survive on a desert island.

Prêt-à-Porter is similarly dripping with theme and hard choices. Though it's not a co-op - it's a game about the cutthroat world of fashion. It is a challenging game of great depth and with Ignacy Trzewiczek's signature attention to detail. It has been unfairly overlooked because of its subject matter, but it is a game that deserves time at the table

Martin Wallace's last game for his publishing company Treefrog Games, which was sadly put out to grass in 2017. This is the third in his series of games that iterates on the mechanisms introduced in A Few Acres of Snow. It is a drop-dead-gorgeous game visually and deserves to be seen on the table for that reason alone.

A Handful of Stars is a game of epic conquest and exploration in a galactic civilization that is attempting to recover from the catastrophic event that dispersed it. Your challenge is to lead one of the seven races your arm of the galaxy in consolidating your empire and invading new worlds. You will need to build fleets of ships, research new technologies, plan long-term strategies and ride the waves left from the ‘Great Cosmic Ripple’ that caused the dispersion.

"Handfull" uses Deck Building, Hand Management and Card Drafting to drive a game of Area Control on a modular board with a "Space" theme. Cracking, Grommit!

This is an "old school" design, regarded as a classic in many quarters.

The Republic of Rome simulates the politics of the Roman Senate during the republic. You represent one of the great families: competing for state offices, military command, economic concessions and new adherents. Innovative in it's design, it is a semi-cooperative game in that - while you vie for power - all players must ensure that Rome itself doesn't fall, or the game will end in a loss for everyone. There is no "traitor mechanic", it isn't a cooperative game either: you will have to co-operate to overcome the various threats that the game sends against Rome (wars, famine, unrest, bankruptcy) whilst working to build your own Senators' and Generals' positions and undermine that of their opponents. As the game's timeframe spans generations, your family will experience the death of its leaders - through assassinations or through plague.

A Martin Wallace game that is ranked incredibly highly for a 13 year old game of this style. Struggle of Empires recreates the various wars fought between the European powers as they attempted to become the dominant force in Europe and the rest of the world during the eighteenth century. Players build armies and fleets, make alliances, establish colonies, improve their economy, and ultimately wage war to expand their empire. As with any Wallace game of a certain weight, you have to be careful though, in this case as a profligate country can end up being consumed by revolution.

Seen by the designer as Civilization set in the 18th Century, it is a game of politics and war without the backstabbing of Diplomacy - each player must enter into two binding alliances for the duration of a war. A big empire building game, it scales well for 4-7 players and has a reasonably simple rule set

OK, I admit it: I'm a sucker for epic, historical, civilization games! This one is by Lewis Pulsipher (not a household name, but nevertheless, a luminary in board game design circles - author of frequently referenced books on the subject).

Britannia is a historical board game that broadly depicts the millennia-long struggle for control of England, Scotland, and Wales. The game begins with the Roman invasion of 43 A.D., continues through the many struggles between Angles, Saxons, Picts, Norsemen, Scots, Irish, and other tribes, and ends with the Norman invasion of 1066.

This is Carl Chudyk's spiritual successor to the hard to find and highly acclaimed Glory to Rome and it uses a similar multi-use card system.

Each player is a monk in a temple who performs tasks, collects materials, and sells or completes works for visitors. The game has the familiar Glory to Rome trope of trying to build massively effective combo-engines to be efficient as well as the "follow" mechanism that means you have to be careful about which actions you take as they may prove to be more useful to your opponents, who will get a chance to "follow" (as in Eminent Domain, San Juan, Race for the Galaxy)

I cannot believe how long I've had this and never played it. The fourth iteration of designer Steve Finn's "Scripts and Scribes" (later: "Biblios"), this is an excellent "the dice game" implementation of a much overlooked game. Rahdo is a big fan (should that carry any weight in your opinions)

Worker placement game about building the kings castle and developing the city around it.

Players pay to place their workers around various spots to gather resources which can be spent to build/upgrade or build the castle, It has an interesting mechanic with a Provost which helps move the bailiff marker along and controls the speed of the game (Thats what i got from my understanding though so i could be very wrong)

I got this as a crowd funded thing before it became popular 13 years ago.

I did not have a civ game and this appealed. I think I got as far as punching it and reading the rules. I seem to recall the lid has a hole in it where a chair leg went through it...

As I add to this list I will omit games I have played, purchased and then not played my copy. Otherwise it could get silly :-)

Interesting thing in this one is trying to stay ahead of a failing economy, it is possible for the game to win without being a co-op.

I played Cuba Libra in the COIN series and enjoyed it.

COIN (counter insurgency) games seem to be quite rare so I picked this up 2017 2nd hand when it became available.

The trick with these is playing cards/actions which help your opponent and limit any damage to your own faction.
