What is a Geek Chat League?

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

Fighting (both verbally and physically) is as inimical to being human as breathing. While many - me included - think we should get past at least the physical bit, this week's list is dedicated to fighting of all sorts.

Do you enjoy any sports with physical or verbal fighting? If not, what about merely "violent" sports like rugby or American football?

Boardgamewise, do you prefer competitive games where you actually get to mess with the other players, or less-competitive games (multi-player solo, coops) with less (or no) screwage?

What was the last verbal or physical fight you were in? Who with? Did you feel it resolved anything or at least let off some steam? [No need to answer if you don't want to share, of course.]

If not -- do you feel there are any positive aspects to fighting (physical or verbal), or do you think both should be done away with (or only one of them)?

Back to boardgames - I know we've covered it before regarding ourselves, but a fight takes more than one person (usually) . . . so what about the character of your gaming group? Is there a lot of trash talk and "friendly fighty fun" or is it more reserved where everyone tries not to get emotional? Or maybe something else? How would you characterize it?

This is the week that was:

 9   Terraforming Mars ww
My wife loves this game and it would have been churlish to say no.

 9   Pax Porfiriana x2 Yucata
My most played game this year. Thanks Yucata!

 10   Power Grid w TNC
On Thursday the guys let me pick and from the offerings on hand I picked PG because it had been a while. We played on the Japan map, and we had the strangest resource market I'd ever seen.

Is it my turn to buy?

I picked up an expensive nuke plant (I think I paid 48 for the 34 plant), and then got a second one a little later (the 19). I was the only one in nukes, and everyone else was heavy into oil and coal. And a little garbage.

So while people were busy spending upwards of 28 a turn on resources, I was paying 3. I was able to deliberately stall building a few times, and then just as round 3 arrived was able to pick up the 33-1/3 plant to seal the deal.

We played with all the promos Will had so I was able to buy the amusement park, which counts as a city, which even though I paid 19 for early in the game stood me in good stead for the entire game.

In the end I took the win with 15 powered cities and 151 cash, second was 15/59.

6   BANG! The Dice Game x2 w TNC
A nice ender to the evening.

 6   Titan iOS
Joined a random game on the app.

This was the December monthly CC:E ladder game that fellow Gelato Patrick set up, and I decided to take the partisans. I managed to capture one of the IG guns, but I ultimately fell to the clock. The short partisan deck and a couple of German time triggers didn't help, and then when the sudden death check arrived, he pulled a 4 and ended it. The VP were only at +2 for him however, so I'll take it as a moral victory.

I definitely needed a better set up though.

What's Going On?
"Rog-nukkah": Well, my milestone birthday was a fabulous week.

I got a great Christmas ornament from the Kelda.
I got a bouquet of flowers at work from my wife.
My wife took me for a casual dinner while the Kelda had her final fiddle club for the season. A nice hole in the wall Italian place called Pronto.
Then she gave me some very very fine port as old as me!

As a birthday gift to myself, I bought a copy of Gloomhaven from my friend Miranda who had the first edition already and thought she'd need a second for another campaign, but decided not. That sucker is huge!

The day after my birthday, we took over the Bistro Absinthe and had a wonderful dinner. My friends brought sparkling and wine to share. I had an amazing dinner that started with a smoked pork hock terrine, then sablefish with a mushroom vermouth sauce, then their classic chocolate lava cake with banana coconut ice cream. Jonathan gave me a copy of Scythe: The Wind Gambit and Downforce, which looks like a fabulous racing game. I also received a copy of Murder of Crows. I like crows, in case that's not been obvious.

I also gave Kevin a call to wish him a very happy birthday.

At our TNC night, the guys gave me a bottle of Talisker. And cake. Because, cake. Mmmmmm, cake...

Christmas is coming: My week of birthday being finely celebrated, we got our tree up yesterday, and our new cat didn't decide to climb it nor attack any of the ornaments. I have completed all my shopping, although I think there may be a parcel or two yet to come...

Secret Santa: I've had the best Secret Santa/Santa Grogs/Secret Gelato ever this year. My secret Santa box arrived this week as well, and there are FOUR things inside, but they are all gift wrapped, so I'm going to be patient and hold off until the actual day.

Howdy Gelati!

Slow week for me:

N/A   Xia: Legends of a Drift System NEW!

My friend has been wanting to play this forever, and his cousin got it for him for Christmas, so we played it last Sunday. It does everything right that I find problems with in Firefly from Gale Force 9.

Variable board with the randomized hexes, multiple paths to victory (trading and delivering goods is only one of many different ways to win), the game moves much more fluidly, and I just enjoy playing it. Tons of fun. We are planning our next game session around it as well, but I'm not sure when that will be just yet. Soon.

I went to see Star Wars opening night, Thursday, and I loved it. I went again this morning with my wife and son, and they loved it as well. What a great film. I missed some amazingly important but minor details the first time, so I'm glad I watched it again. I'll probably watch it one more time before it is out of theaters just in case.

No spoilers, but just in case someone might be annoyed by it:
Spoiler (click to reveal)

On the last scene of the movie, watch the left side of the screen. Just saying.

I really liked it, and it jibes with what I was thinking while twisting it enough that I'm excited and curious about the next steps.

I'm excited to get this week over with and have my holiday break to refresh and revamp some curriculum ideas. I'm getting tired of standardized testing and the way we educate children here. We lose a month of instructional time for standardized tests, and who knows how much critical thinking practice we lose by teaching students to pass memorization tests. I hate it.

I'm looking forward to some more gaming this week. We might bust out Azul tonight. My copy was missing one black tile, so I hope that doesn't make the game play weirdly or anything.

I hope everyone else has a great week!

GAME WEEK

10   Star Wars: Imperial Assault x3
 N/A   Unpublished Prototype x2
 8   1853
5   Sid Meier's Civilization: A New Dawn NEW!
 10   Relic

Star Wars ... oh yeah! Monday and Wednesday, Andrea and I finished the new Star Wars: Imperial Assault that came with the app: Flight of the Freedom Fighter. We loved it. Playing the Rebel side is new to me, and ganging up on the Empire along with Andrea brought that game to a new level for me. It's awesome - I hope they do a lot more of those campaigns. Although the first one was free, I'm willing to pay for them!

Friday was Traing Gaming Night, and again, Lonny brought his latest prototype and he tinkered with the rules again. We broke off the first game in the middle of the green phase, and discussed a couple of rule problems. Then we restarted and played nearly through to the end, after Lonny noted down some problems and will try to correct or solve them in the next playtest version. This will be an awesome game when it is finished!

We then played 1853 (on Lonny's request as he hadn't played it in many years). Well, it's a Tresham game, so there's not much going on on the stock market, but on the track building. I always liked that huge India map, and the two different track widths. The others weren't that much impressed ...

On Friday also a parcel from Philibertnet.com was delivered and it contained the brand new Sid Meier's Civilization: A New Dawn. We tried it out on Saturday ... hrmpf. I was very disappointed. It contains nearly everything its predecessor has, but it was dumbed down in all possible ways. The main engine is very dry and Euro, and there was no civ-feeling at all. In fact, we all were happy when it was over after 90 minutes. Nobody cared who won (well, it wasn't me). I will part from that game for half the price - maybe there's a taker in my area. I guess this game can be a hit in more Euro-centric groups, but it felt flat for us.

After that we needed something more emotional and went for Relic (using both expansions) and the scenario Master Collector. Now that's a game!!! Three hours of pure fun, trash talking and fighting against the baddies of the Antian Sector (and a little among ourselves). For the Emperor, yeah!!!

NEW GAMES

What a waste of 60 good Euros. I'll try to sell that one as it totally disappointed me. I had such high hopes ...

STAR WARS (again)

On Sunday, we went to see Episode XIII.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Oh yes, it totally had that Star Wars feeling, and we both liked it. However, Star Wars again copied itself - can't they invent any new stories? Any new threads? Must it always be a hooded and distorted baddie Leader and his dark and grim right hand? And Assault on Hoth again??? Really??? And now you can destroy even the biggest Star Destroyers by simply sacrificing a medium-sized space ship? Really??? Hey, let's put some droids in those old ships and let's destroy the First Order fleet - should be easy enough! Aaaaargh!!! And Leia, floating through the vacuum for minutes, just hovered back to the ship, more or less unharmed? Wow, the Force must have force-shielded her from the big black cold. Chewbacca, 3PO and Artoo were only in the show to satisfy the old fans. Kylo Ren looks like a spoiled brat compared to Darth Vader. The side story with Finn was nice, but unnecessary (and the Casino planet was just a stupidly puffed up Mos Eisley cantina with 20 times the budget - but it didn't work for me).

But I have to admit, there were great moments and twists I did not expect. One of the best was Luke emerging from the inferno after all those AT-ATs fired at him. There was a collectively "NO WAY!!!" going through the cinema, and the solution of this was absolutely great. But why did he die on that water planet? That was absolutely not necessary. Well, Disney will save some money for Episode IX for sure ... no more Luke, no more Leia, no more Han ...

What I really missed, are the funny dialoges. Episode IV to VI had them - mostly coming from Han. Episode II and III had some great lines between Anakin and Obi-Wan. This little humor, this let's-do-that-impossible-task-and-let's-trash-talk-while-we-do-it is more or less gone from the films. In Rogue One, that worked perfect, in VII and VIII I had the feeling something is missing here.

Even if it delivered a lot of Star Wars that the fans of the original trilogy demanded and expected, it left a flat taste in the mouth.
However, it was Star Wars. So it was great. meeple

Gaming

That's 0 total plays from 0 different games.

Had my exam last week. Group exam where we got the assignment on Wednesday morning and had to do a presentation on Thursday.

We had to make a learning sesssion about health technology using Lego Mindstorms where the kids, based on the curriculum, did learn about the topic and used progremming/coding to solve problem related to this isuue.
We chose Lego Mindstorms as the technology and planned a session(a full day) where the kids should build and code machines that could help elderly get more activity in and also amake alarm systems for when people at retirement homes fell out of bed or tried wlaked out during the night.

It was quite fun to and we ended up getting an A. Happy about that. I can now say with pride: "When it comes to LEGO, I'm top of the line."

Let me know if you want to see any of the things we built(had to built and code some solutions to our tasks) I have them on youtube as link only videos.

The school where I took this exam published a short video on the exam. It is in Norwegian, but you can see me as the bald dude with a beard and demonstrating a LEGO robot. We also held our presentation in Peardeck to get the others involved(Presentation shold show how to teach this)

Vassal/Yucata/Ipad
Although I had no games on the table, I did a bunch of gaming anyways.

Started up the final race of our 8 race season in Thunder Alley. Snug Harbor Oval or Indianapolis if you please. Trying to make up Wendell's small overall lead.

ALso started up a race of Grand Prix where we are five players. Looking forward to seeing how this develops with this bunch. My guess is, brutal wargame like fashion.

Talon is back on the vassal list as Jacob and me reignited our afterburners and set about the final destruction of our ships. Cool to get this one back. Such an awesome game.

Loaded the current vassal build of a solitaire game I help test. Been of the testing stuff for a while in the build up to the exam, but gonna get some plays in during the holiday. This one will be awesome. Can't say more.

Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan on Yucata with Roger. I feel confident I'm gonna hold Roger at bay in this one. Won a crucial battle a few days ago, that I feel shifted the momentum. But, I could very well be wrong and have fallen into Roger's trap.

Got a game of The Rose King going on with Tommy. A really fun little game. Are there any other good shortish abstracts on Yucata?

I paid for the full version of the Star Realms app and have gotten in a few games verseus a friend and a few challenges with unknowns asynch online. I'm ad79 there if anyone wants to challenge me. Such a lot of game in such a small package.
had a game where I was at 14 and managed to take my opponent down to 2. I saw the loss coming there, but alas he only got in 5 damage to take me to 9. I drew no attack at all and as such could only watch as his 2 remained. His draw was equally horrible and another 5 was taken from me. 2-4 was the score when my Blob army was drawn. Racked up over 30 in attack to take the win. Luck of the draw to be able to win, but the game is so much fun.

Other news
My daughter broke her arm last Monday. 4 weeks in a cast. Snow is risky business. Sleding, hit a bump, unable to hold on, landed on arm, broken.

Books
Read some Pappert-Mindstorms. The seminal work when it comes to programming and coding in school. Not always fun to read.

NO games this week, other than a few on phone apps to kill some time.

It was a busy beer week, however, so why not?

Of all of these, four rose above the average and are situated at the top of what I'm calling "The best of December".

The stand-out here is The Duck-Rabbit Wee Scottish Heavy, from a brewery in North Carolina. This is the very definition of the beer style. You can do no better. If I ever wished to make a Scottish HEavy, this is exactly what I would want and expect. Fabulous!

Next, "Dark Signs" is a mighty fine "Quadruppel". And a mind-blowing 13.2% ABV.

Hot on its heels is the Powerwagon Wheatwine. I've had many barleywines before, so this was a first. Not quite as sweet and a bit less body than a barleywine. 11% ABV. Wow-- yummy!

Finally, how about an Irish Red ale from a Belgian Brewer?
Dasher & Dacer worked; in spades. Delicious stuff.

As for the rest? The Ditto Doppelbock was fine, the Holiday Ale (from Edwards, Colorado) was nice, but both lacked a certain somethin' somethin'. You know?

The clear loser was the Half Bastard Stout. It was sour, and I half suspect that it was "off" (tainted). Bleeah.

x1 Peak Oil
x1 1830
x3 Azul

Hiya folks! Over the course of this year, I've found myself saying "boy I can't wait till I have some time to get back into BGG." As much as I love my current job, I rather miss having big pockets of time where I could just move through the forums and comment here and there.

Well, I don't know if my schedule is going to ever return to something like it was, but I do know I have a few minutes now and I missed y'all so here's my report:

The big highlight from last week was 1830. We played with 5 and finished in just over 5 hours. Considering the game went to length (SR8.3), we played pretty briskly, but the train rush was pretty slow, with the 4s surviving much longer than they had any right to. I toyed around with the Can Pac/Eerie strategy which is probably the only portion of the board I haven't really explored. The final scores were close, with only 130 dollars between the top player and 3rd place.

Outside of that, Cati and I have been continuing to enjoy Azul, which is a clever little drafting game with a couple neat puzzles in it.

Work has been good. Things have settled into a definite pace here at Leder Games HQ and it's been nice to give myself time to tear parts of the design of Root apart. I'm pretty happy with my progress so far. With any luck, I'll be posting another diary or two on the game's further development in the next week or so.

Speaking of work, we played a game of Peak Oil at the office. It felt like a watered down version of Vanuatu. I'd be interested in trying it with the "Crude" rules another time though.

Finally, I also saw Star Wars with Cati. I won't bother to put a spoiler box around it except to say that I tend to dislike SW movies, but I was pleasantly surprised by its irreverence and energy. I would happily see it again.

GAMES
I had wanted to play The Gallerist the week before on our usual Monday night, but it was the day after my friend had passed and I was mentally fried. So last Monday we got it on the table, yay. It keeps falling into that category of "we should play this more". We feel that way about most of the Vital Lacerda games.

We got in a Tuesday night of gaming too, and played El Dorado and Can't Stop, a popular game with us at the moment and a classic, respectively.

We were in Michigan recently and got to play 3 games with Billy's sister; Wasabi!, Splendor, and RftG. She was borrowing Wasabi! to decide if she is interested in getting it. I'd only played it once before, so we did a rules reading and jumped in. Cute game. Not sure if there's a lot to it. While in MI we visited Billy (and Emily)'s dad in the care facility, and we (including Emily's kids) played Attraction. The 5-almost-6-year old is in a "that's not fair" phase, which is code for "I didn't get my way", and she's also figured out how to get things from her 2 year old brother in ways that are definitely not fair to him, heh. She's very clever and interesting to watch.

Rather pleased with the amount of gaming we've managed to fit in, with so much else going on.

HOUSE

We were due to leave for MI last Thursday, and our super awesome contractor/construction person/handy ma'am was over on Wednesday to demolish some walls in the basement. We're converting two storage rooms into one larger room for sleeping. She was packing up to leave but we wanted to ask her about a bathroom leaking issue and see if she had anyone who could fix it. This bathroom has been a problem since we moved in, with one leak after another.

She took a look and noted that the walls behind the tiles were soaked, and by the way, she does do this type of work too. Super awesome! Her work is always good and I trust her (and we had a plumber in before who I did not think did a very good job), so we pivoted and she's been working on the bathroom and pausing on the basement rooms.

She demo'ed the shower/tub walls on Thurs after we had left and sent us pictures of it down to the studs (tub still in place). The walls had been wet, 18" above the tub! Apparently whoever put it up didn't waterproof properly and she thinks a grab bar hole had been letting in the water.

She put up new walls, waterproofed them, and is working on tile. Thankfully Billy and I were able to run out and get the tile last Weds, so she's had everything at the house that she needs.

I'm really glad that Billy puts aside a monthly budget for house repairs!

TRAVEL

So last week we headed back to Michigan for a long weekend (Thurs to Mon). We spent most of the time helping his mom with various things, decorating a tree (with the kids once they and their mom arrived), driving and visiting Billy's dad & going to a family gathering (this was a small one, only 14 or so people, heh).

Oh, while we were there, Billy's sister came alone with the kids because their dad was in New York state with his dad, who unfortunately has now passed. It's been a heck of a time recently.

We got back on Monday evening and played a few games with our friend who picked us up. 11 days from coming back from MI to leaving for Europe! Sometimes I think we're crazy, all this traveling we're doing.

So we are gone Dec 29 to Sunday Jan 14. Then we have Mon/Tues/Weds for con prep (and jet lag, etc). Thurs Jan 18 we get a truck and take all the games and con supplies to the con hotel and set up and start playing! We're there until we leave on Sunday Jan 21.

Then we come home and collapse.

CAT

I still have a cat. If you know anyone in the Colorado area interested in a solid black cat, let me know. She's good as the only cat in the house; she's quite scared of other cats and gets bullied by them. She's also kind of neurotic to begin with, so she would do best in a household that is stable and calm, and with people who want a cat around but not to cuddle with (she's not a cuddly cat). I was hoping to rehome her before the Europe trip, but at this point, I'm back to hoping to rehome her before we move in (hopefully) August.

That's all the main news. Oh! My son finished his first college class with 97%, woot! Very proud of him.

Eggs!
Of!
Ostrich!

has been the rallying cry around the game table this week. Totnomad was actually in the toilet as we started the chant, and he piped up with his loudest "Ostrich!" to let us know his playing intentions.

We were happy to hear of Nikki & Billy's imminent return to the Netherlands and broke out EoO to celebrate. Totnomad has an almost creepy knack at second-guessing his mum's bag choices (they play as a team), and being right. Last night he filled 2 of 3 bags on selections she disagreed with. He and his brother also negotiate holding back from the amber battles so they can both get at least one. I'm looking forward to the moment when the 3rd drops so they have to really play each other for it.

Lots of other gaming around the family table and online with all of you. I'm so happy to have VASSAL back (Roger, I think you're up in 1989). Spielbyweb got on my radar, and has a small selection of great games. I dunno how they implement Santiago, but if any Gelati are keen to play the world's cruellest euro, count me in!

edited to add: seriously?!?

No drinks to share, but this weekend promises another batch of my bhang chai lattés. After Friday I have 2 weeks off school, and I plan to be blissed out for at least the first half.

It's been a slow couple of weeks. Played only a few games, most notably a big session of Cards Against Humanity with two other couples and had a blast, in part because of the wine consumed.

Lost the first attempt at December in Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 so only one more go before playing regular boardgames again with my Thursday, once a month group.

Played Stone Age on Yucata with Jonathan, Tommy and Roger and a new one has started.

Home Front: Santa duties have been taking a lot of my time, I was Santa on the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th (yes, my birthday), and the 16th, 17th and 18th. Don't play Santa again until the 24th.
I am a taste tester every so often and got a call to participate in a chocolate panel. They didn't mention that the chocolate was in Oreo cookies. This is the 3rd or 4th time I had to taste test Oreo cookies. Sounds great, but after sample 6 of 8, your taste buds start to get overwhelmed. Try doing that 8 days in a row. At least it wasn't burritos again.
In the middle of all of this, Mary had surgery on her left ankle on Friday the 15th. No weight on that foot for at least three weeks. Did I mention the main floor of the house is one flight up. Add to that the bedrooms and bathroom are another half floor up, so it is not conducive to moving around easily with a bum ankle. After a few days of going up and down stairs on her behind, she opted to get a peg leg. Otherwise she uses the "knee scooter" to get around but it means I have to move the scooter between floors anytime she needs to move. I am getting a bit of a workout being her sherpa. Needless to say, it has impacted playtime.
Roger sent a really nice book on food and wine pairing. I hope to make use of it for Christmas dinner, finding the best wines to go with Porchetta and a Stuffed Pumpkin. As Roger mentioned, he gave me a call on the 13th.

By the way, Avri, this was quite tasty.

Forgot to note that I was writing this while drinking this:
