If you are just starting Gloomhaven, I highly recommend answering basic questions on monster AI I collected in this PDF and maybe come back afterwards:

Basic Monster AI Questions

In contrast, the quiz below tests your in-depth knowledge of the current rule-set of Gloomhaven. It includes many special questions that are irrelevant for everyday game play as corresponding situations are unlikely to occur. Essentially, it's a quiz for people who like to know every nut and every bolt of the rule-set.

The Geeklist includes all questions and explanations originally posted by Broaster House in this thread. I corrected questions and answers that were affected by a recent FAQ. All questions and explanations should therefore reflect the current rule-set.

There are two great programs out which might generally be very helpful for many users who are interested in the intricacies of monster movement/focus: Gloomhaven AI and Monster Mover Web App

Red 1 can move through (but not end on the same hex as) its allies, so based on infinite movement the closest hex it can attack from (its destination hex) is the hex northwest of Blue 1. Moving to (e) will make Red 1 end up 5 movement points away from its destination hex (1 movement point closer than where it started off), neither (a), (b), (c) or (d) will get it any closer than 5 movement points to that destination hex and since it will never move longer than necessary Red 1 will end its movement on (e).

Since range can't be counted through walls the minimum range from where Red 1 is currently standing and Blue 1 is 4. Moving to either (a), (b) or (c) puts Red 1 in range of Blue 1. In order to be able to attack, Red 1 will also need LOS to Blue 1, and since LOS is determined by being able to draw a line from any corner of the attack hex to any corner of the target hex LOS is true in all of these cases. Red 1 can move to either (a), (b) or (c) and attack Blue 1.

Blue 1 is the focus so Red 1 will make sure it can attack at least Blue 1. Since Red 1 can't get to a hex where it can attack more than just Blue 1 in 6 movement points it will move to (c) and attack Blue 1. The reason it won't move to (a) instead is because it can't get LOS from there since all that hexagons corners shares the corner with a wall.

Blue 1 is the focus and since Red 1 won't be able to reach a hex from where it can attack Blue 1 it will instead find the most optimal destination hex re-evaluated based on infinite movement and then start moving towards that hex. That hex is the one 3 steps east of (b). It is the closest hex from where it can attack 3 targets and doesn't have disadvantage on its focus. Based on that information Red 1 will move to (b).
