This list for GRAB members who would like to publicize their accomplishments and to keep us updated as they attempt to fulfill their personal gaming goals of 2018. This list is open to any member or friend of GRAB. Keep in mind this is for fun, and don't feel too stressed if you fail.

Among previous years' goals we had one brave soul attempt to play War of the Ring, some wanted play a gamer's gamer a week, another wanted to play each Splotter games at least once. I've gone for softer targets playing the alphabet game with boardgames, and designers and in another year I played all of the SdJ winners.

Have fun in the New Year!

I attended game events around the world last year, but played with the same handful of people. So this year I pledge to play with a wider assortment of people. I will mine my played games for relevant information.

I tend to like games that combine mechanisms rarely seen together. In 2018 I want to explore this theme thoroughly, playing games I know I like, finding interesting combinations in games I haven't played before, and maybe discovering a combination that hasn't been used but is fertile ground for a new game design.

I'm not sure what success will look like. Playing one of these a month will be very easy. One a week, probably impossible (depending on how lax I am with criteria). It will depend on how many ideas I have. The linked geeklist is open for suggestions.

This year I pledge to break what I believe is new ground in the gaming hobby. I will conduct a year-long scientific experiment to test the following hypothesis:

The higher that I rate a game, the higher my internal body temperature.
The lower that I rate a game, the lower my internal body temperature.

I will gather the data by keeping a thermometer and journal with me at all times. I will record other factors, such as who I am playing with, if I win/lose, if the game is short/long, etc. At the end of the year, I will process all the data in the form of charts and graphs. People love charts and graphs. Ultimately, I will discover if there is (or isn't!) a correlation between how much I like a game and my internal body temperature. I will post periodic updates to this entry as we go.

(EDIT):
Results have been published here:

This year I resolve to host at least three (3) game nights. While this might seem paltry to the RTG crowd (a traditional game night I started over 15 years ago), it's a tough one for me, simply because I have two jobs and I'll be increasing my graduate student course load up to 10 credit hours in the summer and fall semesters.

Plus, the last two times I have posted that I was going to host a game night, NOBODY felt like driving to Coopersville (to be fair, Dan probably had a temperature).

Hosted April 28, six total players
Hosted August 25, four total players

My second resolution: I resolve to play each of the officially published Power Grid maps this year. Games played on New Year's Eve 2017 will count in my tally of Power Grid games played in 2018, but New Year's Eve 2018 will NOT count.

As I own all the maps, the only difficulty will be finding opponents and time to play each of them. (Edit: And figuring out when to have the time to average 1.5 plays of Power Grid per month!)

Maps (*means I haven't played before)
US
Germany
France
*Italy Played 7-22. Came in second, short by one city
Benelux
Central Europe
*China Played 12-31 through 1-1-18. Won.
Korea
Brazil
Spain/Portugal
Russia Played 4-28-18. Came in third or fourth out of six.
Japan
Quebec
*Baden-Wittenburg
Northern Europe
*UK & Ireland Played 7-28-18. Came in second out of four.
Australia
*Indian Subcontinent

I will jump in with a resolution this year. I have the complete Alea collection but have never played them all. I resolve to play all big, medium, small, and very small box games.

I've never been one for resolutions---probably because they require commitment---but this seems like it might be fun. I'm committing to play games after all.

My resolution is to play each of my (as of January 1, 2018) rated 9 or 10 games in 2018. Not as ambitious as Jonathan's play all his 8 and ups, but I don't play as often as Jonathan. So, here we go. The games to be played are:

Bughouse Chess
Paths of Glory
A House Divided
Fighting Formations: Grossdeutschland Motorized Infantry Division
Urban Sprawl

Tichu: 1/11/18 at Out of the Box with Alex vdT, his son, Jack, and Bill.
Twilight Struggle: 1/18/18 at Out of the Box with Darin.
Power Grid: 2/1/18 at Out of the Box with Jason and Darin on the India map.
Snowdonia: 2/1/18 at Out of the Box with Darin using the Channel Tunnel 1881 scenario.
Glory to Rome: 2/15/18 at Out of the Box with Rusty, Alex, Bill, and Christopher.
Innovation: 2/15/18 at Out of the Box, team game with Alex and Rusty versus Bill and Aaron.
Combat Commander: Europe: 4/19/18 at Out of the Box with Alex. First wargame of the bunch!
Formula D (or Formula Dé): 4/21/18 at Jonathan's with Matt R, Dan, Marc, Gray, and Jonathan.
Through the Ages (either version): 5/3/18 at Out of the Box with Darin and Jason (first play for Jason). Darin wins 183-170-141.
Puerto Rico: 5/8/18 at Jonathan's with Beth, Lauren, and Bruce. Bruce crushes us 63-48-46-44.
EastFront: 5/9/18 at home with Isaac. A combined EastFront/WestFront game in Summer '43.
Combat Commander: Pacific: 8/2/18 at Out of the Box with Alex. Scenario E.
Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends: 8/2/18 at Out of the Box with Alex. High Form.

This seems like it will be a challenge because there are a lot of different types of games on here, so I'll need to be pinging a lot of different types of gamers. Plus, my primary wargame opponent will be heading off into the world come September. Maybe Dan and I can start a Fathers of Absent War Gaming Sons (FAWGS) support group.

January is almost behind us, so I'd better establish my design goals for the year.

Finalize the rulebook and card distribution for Filler.
Create a solo rule set for Filler.
Write a design diary for Filler.
Shepherd Filler the rest of the way to publication.
Revisit Grips & Gaffers with new eyes, and bring a substantially revised prototype to Protospiel Chelsea.
With Tim, bring On Second Thought to a presentable state prior to Protospiel Chelsea.
Start at least one new design I don't have an idea for yet.
