Looking forward to gaming in 2018, and looking back on 2017, in terms of games.

Themes running through this list include:
o Need to get out gaming more--much more!
o That said, will continue to play and design solo versions of multiplayer games, and to enjoy some electronic games.
o Liking for games with interesting decisions arising from simple rules.
o Kickstarter: used to back a few projects a year, backed none in 2017, may well back none in 2018.

In 2017:
o I followed the Clans Kickstarter campaign closely, but didn't back it. My KS ban was/is strict!
o I played Clans only once face to face. I didn't get out to game nearly enough.
o I started designing an Automa variant. (There is an official "how high can you score" solo variant.) I find Automas great fun, to design as well as to play.
o I used Tabletopia to develop the variant.

In 2018:
o I'll get the game! It is one of a sparse handful of games I am determined to acquire.
o I'll play it face to face, taking it to gaming sessions, push it at any sessions I host...
o I plan to develop the MacRonin Automa to the point where I can label it version 1.0.

The game itself is right up my alley, and set in the land of my birth: Scotland!

This item is as much about the Evolution family of games as about Climate itself. Before 2017:
o I backed the second Evolution Kickstarter for Evolution itself and the Flight expansion.
o I visited the North Star Games office, near where I used to live, for playtesting.
o I backed the third Evolution Kickstarter for the Climate conversion kit.

In 2017:
o I was an alpha tester for the Evolution video game, but a strong-willed non-backer of the Kickstarter for the beta.
o I started designing an Automa variant for Climate.
o I was active in the BGG discussion of the next member of the Evolution family of games: Oceans.

In 2018:
o I'll play Climate as much as possible.
o I plan to develop the Automa to the point where I can label it version 1.0.
o I'll be following, and perhaps Kickstarting, Oceans.

I got in to Euro games when we weren't sure what to call them: German-style games? Designer games? Ever since then, Reiner Knizia has been my favorite designer.

In 2017:
o Deckbuilding continued to be a popular mechanism, and Knizia used it in this well-received game.
o This game elicited my favorite BGG post of 2017. Of course I saw only a small fraction of the content posted to BGG in the last year, but I greatly enjoyed and admired Laszlo Molnar's account of El Dorado in the context of Knizia's previous work. (This bullet added in an edit to the original entry.)

In 2018:
o I will undertake The Quest for El Dorado.

This sounds like the kind of game that got me into German-style games in the first place: simple rules give rise to interesting decisions.

In 2018:
o I will finally play Concordia, five years after its publication.

In 2017:
o I did more "tabletop" gaming on electronic devices than on tabletops. The electronic devices include a PC (on which I played the above-listed Clans and Evolution), an Android phone (see next item on list), and an iPad 2.
o Paperback is my favorite game for the iPad. The app handles the chores associated with deckbuilders and with word games (respectively, shuffling and word lookup). The AI isn't terrible. Unlike many games and other apps, Paperback does not require iOS 10 (which my iPads can't run).

In 2018:
o I'll play Paperback and other game apps on iOS as long as technology allows.

Uwe Rosenberg used to be known as a designer of light card games such as Bohnanza. He then gravitated to heavier board games such as Agricola. But he still comes out with mid-range games, such as Glass Road, and lighter games-such as Patchwork (2016).

In 2017:
o I bought the Patchwork app for Android. I did so after some thought, since: I limit my Android app purchases to those I can fund via Google Opinion Rewards; some Android game apps wouldn't work for me, since my eyes aren't as good as they were, and my phone screen isn't huge.
o I have been delighted with the purchase. I like the game very much: simple rules, interesting decisions, novel theme. I am impressed with the app: the interface, the ease of online play, the levels of AI.

In 2018:
o I will continue to play the Patchwork app online (challenge me as ChangingWay if you like!) and against AI (I have yet to challenge Uwe, the hard AI level).
o I'll look out for other great game apps compatible with my Android phone and eyes.

In 2018, I intend to part company with a bunch of games, many of which meet several of the following criteria.
o Kickstarted before 2017.
o Has personality due to one or more of the following: small publisher, unusual theme, cool art,...
o Good game, but one that I may well never play again.
o Accompanied by expansion that came with the KS (either by reward level or by stretch goal).

Retreat to Darkmoor is a good example, in more than one sense of the word good. Let me know if you're interested in such games, especially if you live in Rhode Island or an adjacent state.

I should update my For Trade list. It doubles as a "for sale, but haven't decided on a price" list. Some of the games on it are also on the "free to good home" list.

In 2017:
o My son got a Nintendo Switch. As I type this, he's sitting on the couch next to me playing Zelda.
o We've played a lot of Mario Kart since getting the Switch, our first game console.
o He got Arms and Splatoon for Christmas.

In 2018:
o The Switch will continue to provide family fun!
