Gaming for me is about relaxing and forgetting about day to day worries. Don't get me wrong I play to win and enjoy the occasion it happens but its not my main concern. This past year had plenty of challenges and gaming helped me maintain a bit of sanity. A huge thanks to those who have opened their homes and invited me to play games with them. Thanks to Boardgamer2008 opens his home every week and treats us like family, Broggi who on rare occasions our regular host cant be around opens his home and for the invites to epic game days, RocksnRolls and CSoren for hosting game days were I got to meet even more gamers from the area, and lastly a shout out to Legomancer who keeps the invites coming for theme days tho I havent been able to make one yet I will one of these months.
I decided to make an effort to fully track my plays this past year. I was rather lazy when I first joined BGG and was curious to see how the numbers stack up year to year 314 games played Win percent was 36% 88 games this year were brand new to me tho not necessarily new games
Games purchased this year no way im tracking that or putting it into print where my wife could see it lol
GOTY for me Gloomhaven. Game is massive, innovative in its card combat, engaging in its story arc, the nostalgia of my D and D days in youth its different but familiar, and biggest like is that my adult sons play this one with me.
Honorable mentions Blood Rage Yokohama Star Trek Ascendancy
Worst game of the year for me. I reread the write ups on my low scored games and this one stands out
4 player game. This is a card driven take that game players vie for area control by placing houses to become mayor and to build mines, factory's and commercial properties. Take that games are ok if they are short and sweet. This game went over 5 hours...... it overstayed its welcome not just for the take that but I just don't like giving up control of my destiny in game to the randomness of the draw and timing of when you get a particular card. This game needs an asterisk for rules being laid out in one case I could have placed two houses by a civic building thinking it gave the house bonus points but was told civic didn't give the bonus when they actually did. I came in second by just a few points so this could have been the difference. Another thing about the game that stands out in a negative is some of the cards that come out in later round just don't work or make sense for their abilities as by round three they aren't effective. Add the shuffling of discarded cards from previous rounds into draw pile for next rounds raise chances that you don't get the more powerful cards but weaker cards instead. The game is very swingy in scoring with some cards being very powerful. All in all it's to luck based and way too long for a take that game to be enjoyable. I came in second after being near dead last the whole game but even a win wouldn't sweeten this one enough to swallow further plays. Rating after 1 play 3 Would I play again? Nope rather have a root canal Would I buy? I wouldn't take a free copy of this one
Downforce was my disappointing game of the year. I was really looking forward to this one as another good game for home play with family. I really liked the roots this game came from but the change to the bidding kills much of the fun in the game for me. Still play it on occasion but feel its better house ruled to be more like Top Race in bidding
Nicest surprise of the year is getting this for the wife and finding out its not just cashing in on the fame of Bob Ross but actually has a decent game design and is fun to play. Any game I can find that my wife likes and I enjoy is a big win/
This could be my kick starter 1st burn. I backed this hoping Queen Games were really fixing their reputation and trying to make amends with the gaming public. As the new year starts I still have an unplayable game missing the mission cards. 1 lousy deck of cards that I requested over 8 weeks ago and still nothing. Customer service it seems has not been improved. Lesson learned even if they finally come through and make my 76 dollar game playable their issue with customer service dont deserve another chance not from me at any rate
