This list is meant to be a concise perusal for those times we wish to browse for something new and don't have endless time to comb through the SGOYT list. Anyone can post an item but only one item.

Please share your experiences of the solitaire games you played for the first time this past month.

In order to assist with collecting Statistics from these lists, please post an entry with your chosen game of the month, and use the "insert board game" feature to add other games you mention in your entry.

Format is completely up to you but I reiterate the requirement of one geeklist item per user.

Continuously amazes me. The showdowns (the fights) are very different with every monster, and require interesting strategies. Not as hard as I expected, or maybe I am just lucky so far. But there seems to be consensus that 1.5 is easier than earlier versions.

It helps that the miniatures are of phantastic quality and I really enjoy assembling and painting them.

But what really blows me away is the story that's unfolding. Or rather the fragments of story that give you enough detail to get a feel for the dark world, but leave enough open to let your imagination fill in the rest. And it's always something that directly affects gameplay, often in dramatic (if not brutal) ways.

I am sure it's not for everyone; but I am really happy I went all in when a satan's pledge became free at the very end of the 1.5 kickstarter.

Heroes Wanted is another game I went all in for during the last kickstarter. It has enough potential that I tried three different scenarios. I expect this to be quite a good game with the right group of gamers, that appreciate some silly interaction. But for solo I didn't find it interesting to play at all.

Nightmare Forest: Alien Invasion is probably not really a bad game. I just couldn't get myself to play more than one round. There simply was nothing there that hooked me in.

This is a fun, quick-but-still-puzzly Mars themed game. The theme comes through well enough, though not dramatically. It is otherwise somewhat abstract.

The other game I got was Mythotopia which is "deck building with a map". I played solo and multi and enjoyed both, but they both need work.

The solo I played two player (against myself), and I intend to try it three players. We played 4 player multi and the end game we gave up on because we saw it just going on forever. I intend to work on it.

So, sure, this game was released 10 years ago. But I've only just got a copy, and I found a good solo variant for the base game on the forums, so away I went to play it! Great fun.

And that's the only new solo game for me in December, alas!

I had my first play of Spirit Island. I had fun with my play, though it was quite the analysis paralysis monster. I played with two spirits, and it was quite an interesting puzzle to figure out how to use them together (as well as how to time effects with the fast and slow powers). I'm not sure that I loved the game, but I do look forward to further plays of it.

As much as I enjoy the designer's games, I was initially a little put off from this as its solo game was considered similar to The Gallerist (which is a really good design, but I find Vinhos Deluxe to offer far more, and a better opponent, for solitaire play).

A surprise Christmas present from my wife, I've not really felt this connection to The Gallerist, and I've found this to be another impeccable design from a man who seems able to do little wrong with these wonderfully heavy euros.

Currently second only to Vinhos in my ratings from this stable, but possibly going to jockey for that top spot with more plays.

By far and away the best new solo game for me in December.

In fact it is now my #4 solo game of all time.

My thoughts on it can be found here: It Is A Bit Good

Also new to me:

Galactic Strike Force (Keeping)
Star Trek Panic (Trading)
Impulse (Trading)
This War of Mine: The Board Game (Borrowed a friend's copy to play but won't be getting my own copy)

I took an instant liking to this game. Simple, quick in every sense (game time, set up, reset, clean up) but can be played slow and thoughtfully as well. Had a great time playing it with a group as well; interesting to see how the challenge changes when played solo vs 2p vs 4p.

I think it's beautiful to look at, it was incredibly easy to get going, and although there was a moment where I wondered if it would be challenging enough, I quickly realized that I loved how the game unfolded and enjoyed the entire process of playing it.

I don't see this ever leaving my collection.

And for once, I'll add an additional game. But this game deserves it. I completed my Dicember challenge using only pnp games, and one new game stood out:

Ada Lovelace: Consulting Mathematician was by far the most addicting. I wasted a lot of eraser resetting the game over and over again. This will be the game that forces me to get a laminator. I don't think I can put into words why I loved it so much (it's also been a month since I played it) but...it was just a delight to try and beat my own score! 100% recommended.
