Most of my board game purchases include an extra hidden cost: a number of additional organizer boxes in order to sort and organize components for quick set up and easier play. My usual ritual with a new game purchase is to remove the bits from the sprues, organize them by player color and unit type, toss the insert, and find an appropriate organizer box to store the components in.

Every once in a great while, though, a game comes along that surprises me by having an insert so well-designed that I can use it as-is. I store my games vertically (as you would shelve a book), so some inserts that might otherwise be fine for horizontal storage completely fail for me - even custom-built third-party inserts are usually made for flat storage and still aren't as "user-friendly" as I would like.

So what board games out there have inserts so well-produced that you've had no reason to throw them out and replace them with other organizer boxes?

I picked up this game a couple months ago and played it last night for the first time. What a great game! Not only did I enjoy it, but the box and insert are spectacular!

First of all, the box has a finger-sized cutout on one end which allows you to reach into the box and lift the board right out. Usually, you have to bend the side of the box outward in order to get your fingers in around the board to lift it out, or turn the box upside down, or try to get a fingernail in there to pry the board out, but with the box cut-out, it couldn't be easier to remove the game board. It's a simple detail, but once you see it, you wonder why it's not a standard feature on every board game with a full-sized board.

Secondly, the board lifts out to reveal an organizer box underneath, complete with lid! Most games I buy have inserts that prevent you from incorporating any decent kind of organized storage. When I was new to the hobby, the idea of throwing out an insert was horrifying. Now I do it automatically and move in my own custom organizer boxes, whether Plano, Darice, Lockables, or something else. There's nothing easier when getting a game started than asking people what color they want to play with, tossing them a box with every part already organized and sorted - just open the lid and get started. No dozens of bags to open, or pieces to sort, just - bam! - open the lid and everyone's ready to go. So it was so cool to see that this game comes with a full-size organizer at the bottom, with its own lid! The game comes already pre-sorted and organized! No aftermarket boxes required, no sorting and bagging of components necessary - everything is ready right out of the box!

This is how games should be made! This kind of attention to detail is really a very nice touch. With a collection of nearly 700 games, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of titles that were perfectly organized right out of the box. This is one of the best!

Another game that requires no aftermarket organizer, the bottom tray which holds the game board and components has a finger notch in order to help facilitate the removal of board. The components all fit into tray perfectly and are kept securely in place by the board, which fits very snugly underneath the box lid. So nice to not have to design my own organizer solution for a change!

This comes with a custom-designed foam insert which securely holds all of the components in their own unique places, even when stored vertically.
