Wow! I've been tracking my acquisitions for ten years now here on BGG, though they've been accumulating for far longer than that. So for the 10th year running, here's my annual acquisition list, back again for you to love, hate, envy, loath, desire, despise, or ignore it, and the word for this year is... wait for it...

Fomoism
(foe-moe-is-em)
noun 2017- < New Geekist< Geek FOMO fear of missing out (see adj:FOMO)
1. An affliction caused by an innate fear of missing out on something through lack of involvement or acquisition. Often associated with completionism or OCD.
2. Pathology Archaic Absurdus. a condition of deformity caused by morbid conditions of cramped space due to an excess of items (i.e. boardgames) acquired.
___example - Fomoism had taken its toll on the fomoist, who was deformed and hideous to gaze upon.
(See also fomoist, fomoistic, fomology, fomorific, fomortunity, fomocratic, fomocracy)

I still value breadth and depth in my eclectic collection. Quantity is breadth, variety is depth, and eclectic is a subjective term I apply in determining its overall quality. I'm a double agent to both Cult-of-the-New and the Registry of Retro Gamers, and well entrenched within the Company of Completionists. So here's this year's living list of my acquisitions. With the exception of a few early January acquisitions, pre-orders and Kickstarters are up front, followed by all other acquisitions mostly in the order they were acquired. It starts out slow as usual and then ends up becoming an out-of-control monster. I managed to contain the beast last year. Trying to tame it is another matter entirely.

Be sure to subscribe if you want to keep up with the latest bunker bulging boardgame acquisitions. Thumb what you like, ignore what you don't.

I've now broken out my expansion acquisitions into a different list which can be found here:
Expansions I completionistically acquired in 2018

Here's prior years lists of gains:
A Plethora of Games: The Eclectic Collector's 2017 acquisitions
Persistant Completionism: the Eclectic Collector's 2016 acquisitions
An Eclectic Collector's Boardgame Bunker Acquisitions for 2015
A Fool and his Money... My 2014 Boardgame Bunker Acquisitions
Boardgame Bunker Baubles - My 2013 game acquisitions
And so it begins (and ends)... My 2012 Game Gains (or the Money Pit part 2)
My 2011 Game Gains (or The Boardgaming Money Pit)
My consolidated 2010 Game Acquisitions
My comprehensive 2009 Game Purchases

meeple Cheers

And the honor of first acquisition of 2018 goes to...

I was on the fence last year about getting this but finally decided to get this one. Personally I think this planet has far too many Civilisations already. Fortunately I don't feel the same way about Civ board games. Apparently this one is totally different than the last one, if you can believe that. Overall this one probably scales better with two players but handles the full number just fine while still providing a Civ experience in under two hours.

I love London (both the city and the first edition of the game. With so much old material getting rehashed every year for no good reason, I always thought this version was a straight reprint of the first edition with some cosmetic changes at best. It goes to show what happens when you don't do your homework or keep up on current events. I finally got around to checking up on it and found that there was enough change in this version to warrant having both and getting a different experience from each.

Decided to order this from the publisher. It seems to be a great battle to play out on the scale provided by this release. The rules at the basic level aren't too daunting and are available for preview. I like that the game seems to play out well at the basic level without the need to add advanced options and not feel cheated from a full experience.

There are some good reviews on the game with discussion of fun versus realism and it seems the game or at least this scenario of the battle delivers on both. Lots of close quarter blasting of each other's ships. Movement and wind gage are all modelled but within the confines of this battle, cannon loads and crew quality take precedence.

The game price is reasonable in €, it's the shipping that pushes up the overall cost, but that's the price of doing business overseas. The components look great and it seems easier to model this battle with these ships than say something like those from Sails of Glory or Pirates of the Carribean ships.

A fast filler with strategic depth. Mostly I’m interested in the card/hand management aspects of the game but there’s a resource economic bent to it as well. This one didn’t seem to raise much buzz at Essen last year. Picked it up from a local gamer.

From Hollandspiele, the first game in their Shields & Swords II line. I read over the rules set and was impressed by the simplicity and see this system as eminently solo friendly. The opposing forces in this one seem fairly balanced and the terrain elements offer some nice options for tactics. The commentary on their website regarding the evolution of this series is pretty lengthy and impressive. Enough so that I thought I'd dabble with this one to start with and at least have one game from the system in my collection. If I like it I may get more. $30 from the publisher.

Impressed with the Agricola, Master of Britain game mechanics I decided to grab this one as well as it seems to take that system and add subtle improvements. Overall, the scale of this one is simply larger but the history is immersive and the decisions seem palpable with regard to what's being portrayed. $45 from the publisher.

This one is really an evolution of the Hold the Line series with approachable entry-level rules and quick play. In fact, it seems to step up things a notch. The system lends itself well to cover any number of engagements over different periods, and there's no shortage of scenarios in the box with 20+ to choose from ranging from 16th to 18th century battles. And as a bonus, many of the battles are more obscure engagements making them all the more interesting to me from a historical knowledge perspective.

This game from Hollandspiele is one of their pricier ones at $80 though you can get a PnP version for much cheaper. Most of the cost is probably associated with them producing the hexagon terrain for the game. As for me, my time is worth more than what it would cost me to assemble a nice PnP copy so I was willing to pay for a boxed version. Sometimes it's fun to assemble things, but most times I'd rather be playing with what's already assembled for me (and hopefully painted as well).

Carry over pre-order from last year that still hasn't gotten to publishers (or KS backers for that matter) with comments every month since October that it's shipping next month.

Back when I discovered that this was a lighter reboot of the classic AH Circus Maximus I committed to getting a copy. It's supposed to be more streamlined but retain the same visceral feel. Looking forward to seeing if it lives up to the hype. For that matter, just looking forward to receiving the copy I ordered (though I didn't back the KS for this one I'm sure my copy is on the same boat which is yet to arrive).

Carried over from 2017. The only hope I have is that it will finally be shipped. There's probably better excuses for putting tits on a bull than any number of the different one's they've had for why this has been so delayed.

Jumped on this one in the late hours of the KS. Okay, the theme is goofy and the board doesn't evoke exciting Sci-fi visions of space, but there's something appealing about it besides the interesting 3D board movement mechanics. It has a TtR card play mechanic to place meeples, a traitor aspect like many other games out there, and other Euro mechanics we've seen before to improve your hand or placement ability. The asymmetric character abilities don't seem overpowered and there's a fatalistic feel to accomplish things before the universe is destroyed coupled with the desire to get all the glory for saving it. Anyway, it all looked interesting and easy to grok so I jumped on board. Free shipping in the US didn't hurt that decision.

Expected Delivery: Dec 2016
Actual Delivery: Mar 2018 It's about F'ing time. Piss poor performance from the publisher and they used just about every excuse in the book to account for design, manufacturing, and delivery delays. But on the bright side, at least it delivered.

Another French publisher carryover from 2017 with all the usual excuses for delayed shipping. Don't get me wrong. I expect delays with KS's, but those from France seem to have the longest delays. When things go over six months and I can't blame Chinese New Year, it's an indicator that the publisher just doesn't have their act together in a business sense.

I'm a sucker for a WWII card game. Most of them I'm familiar with are tactical in nature and this one is no different. Don't believe me? Then check out my commitment to this geeklist: WWII Card Games - The Definitive List. This one uses the mechanics from their tile based game in assigning commands to units through your command (card) structure. There's a plethora of scenarios to be had and lots of KS extra material. I backed at the "all in" level for 100 Euros. I'm not the biggest fan of stylized art in my wargames, but this one does it well with tongue-in-cheek caricatures from old war movies.

Another 2017 carry over. At least this one is currently only 3 months overdue. But given that they probably won't get it out before Chinese New Year, I'm expecting an April shipping at the earliest putting them on par with the French.

This along with the KS Siege of the Citadel: Brotherhood Expansion and all the other goodies that go along with it. A revival of a game that saw its final days being dumped for chump change at places like KayBee toys and other outlet sales stores. But also a game that harkens back to the GW types of games like Space Marine or Space Crusade as well as more recent KS games from CMoN like Arcadia Quest in terms of the sheer number of minis to play with. There's a lot of material in this KS for the price of the Dark Legion pledge of $149.

Another 2017 carry over. Hopefully to see an early 2018 ship date keeping it under the six month delay mark. We'll see.

A; It's a Martin Wallace game
B: It's a contender for the Cute category of the Waltawards
C: It's got Kakapo birds (my pronunciation is kick-a-poo)
D: It's set in New Zealand

All good reasons for me to like the game so I'm backing it. It should make an Essen release and it looks good as a family game as well as an area control game with good card/hand management mechanics.

Also, KUDO's to the KS for finally having a category that rewards previous backers. It's the first I've seen and hope it's a trend that continues. I hate "early backer" pledges and would rather see loyalty rewarded if anything. And in the case of this game I'm not a return customer but will establish that standing after this pledge.

Another 2017 carry over. I should have wizened up about Worthington by now as I don't think they've made a projected release date yet. Their comments are that "we're reworking things". Back in November they were still waiting for "proofs" a month after it should have been delivered. Oh, and Chinese New Year is coming (much like winter on GoT).

Decided to get in a late pledge for this and throw on one other game I hadn't pledged to get the combined shipping. I like the objective driven cards for the Germans in this one. As the Germans, you're married to getting those objectives for the win points but as the Allies, you never really know what those are and need to react across the map.

Well at least someone updated the release date for the game on BGG. Hopefully this won't see more than another month of delay before shipping which isn't too bad. Someone dropped the ball on projections because they really wanted to have this in hand for sales at Essen last year.

Do I really need another version of this game having all the previous ones? Yes, yes I do. It's really the only way to get Hamilcar: First Punic War which was supposed to be the follow up to this game. Plus, I saw this at Essen 2016 and liked the super sized map which has now been added as an extra item available for purchase in the KS. The plethora of plastic miniatures in this version stand out nicely on the map giving things an extra charm. Bottom line however is this is a well trodden classic and one of my favorite games on the period. I'm looking forward to the Hamilcar stand-alone game in the box as well. Backed for the game and super-sized map.

Another 2017 carry over. But at least now we're getting within the realm of reasonable delays for KS's.

Decided to get in on this to have a "cutest" game entry for the Waltawards (always a plethora of awards to be awarded). Actually it looks to be a great family game enjoyable with younger children or adults alike for good laughs. There's a lot of speculation in the game with some control in the friend/foe cards you play so the may be some strategy involved. Overall it looks like fun. Now on Kickstarter, cool bits enclosed, and a reasonable price of $49 with free shipping.

Another 2017 carry over. This publisher has KS'd enough games to where they should have a better idea on production delivery timelines. Hopefully it shouldn't go over a month or so.

I'm liking Ryan Laukat's work these days. I like the simplicity of the rules, the light dice action mechanics, and the artwork. The original Empires of the Void didn't neccesarily make a big splash on the boardgame scene. I'd categorize it as a hidden gem. But I think it's good enough to warrant getting this second version as well. Pledged for the deluxe version with a plethora of "deluxe" material in the box.

My guess with this being a Worthington Games publication, they'll use the excuse to ship this with another product of theirs that's delayed (see Dunkirk above). Still, so far it's only a month off the mark.

The latest offering from Worthington Publishing, LLC being offered through a KS. It's a bit of special interest to me since that's where my dad started out his tour of duty in WWII. The smaller nature of this game should make for good tactical movement even though it's still an entry level game system in my book. It's going to be followed up by Holdfast games for Sicily and Italy.

Finally we're into KS games with originally projected 2018 release dates.

Given how much my wife and I like the world of Gloomhaven, I decided to jump in on the KS for this one. It's basically a tile placement/resource management Euro but a lot of the mechanics will seem familiar if you've played Gloomhaven with the top/bottom card action mechanics. At $49 with free shipping I'm happy to support the project. Looks fun.

CMoN has been fairly good recently at hitting target release dates. We'll see how close they get with this one.

FOMO. "Fear of missing out". I can come up with a plethora of reasons to back or not back this Kickstarter. In fact, I had already backed it before posting this list, then backed out, and now pledged again in the last few hours. And the only true reason for doing so that I can justify is FOMO.

Allow me to blather on. This game won't even hit the table for another year. Do you know how many other new games will supplant this vying for "cult of the new" status? Many to be sure. Okay, but when it hits the table it looks fun to play. Well perhaps more fun if you're into a Victorian era steampunk/horror themed mood. And then to take full advantage you'll really need five players unless someone doubles up on heroes since this is a one versus many (or 1vX game as I call it), and, your required to always play with four heroes against the villain. Okay, I should be able to manage that since I've got plenty of other 1vX games that have a similar mechanic.

And then there's the minis argument. They're certainly unique and well sculpted and like nothing else I have in my collection. Hey, they're CMoN minis, what'd you expect. But I don't or won't paint them, and they likely stay relegated to the game box they came in. No, I just don't see myself using them to play some steampunk RPG. So despite how awesome the minis are, they're just going to be candy for this game and that's probably it.

So what about cost? The entry for the Ambassador level is $120 which is pretty reasonable for the game pluse the exclusive The World of SMOG: Rise of Moloch – The Embassy expansion and all the additional exclusive minis and scenarios that come with it. No problem there. But add in the works and you're in for another $150 for more expansions and more exclusive figures (lots of them). So if you're going to KS something, always try to get the most stuff you can, otherwise just wait for a retail copy. And true to CMoN releases, there's a lot of "exclusive msterial to be had that feed the FOMO syndrome.

And of course there's game play concerns. After reading the current rules and watching a full play through of a scenario, the mechanics seem solid and no less stale than any other tactical combat adventure. There's a power use of "ether" that gets transferred between the heroes and the villains when used which forces a bit of strategic thinking on when to use it lest you give more power to the bad guy. We've seen similar mechanics in games like Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) and to an extent Conan. Overall, the game looks easy enough to play and each scenario shouldn't outlast it's welcome. The level up mechanics between scenarios is nice but probably eats up some time if you're trying to finish a three scenario campaign in an evening. And it does come with campaigns or you can play things " one off".

In the end, it's a unique themed minis adventure game with a few new mechanics, cool minis, and dice rolling combat that will find its place among other similar games in my collection. But also in the end, FOMO drove the purchase.

Battles in and for Stalingrad are a personal favorite when it comes to WWII conflicts. This one instantly appealed to me. Enough so that I vainly sprung for the "image and name on a token" level. First time I've done that that I can recall. I like the fact that this one plays solo, co-op, and competitively. Truly a plethora of ways to enjoy the game.

Here's the next evolution of deck-building for this game. As with any deck builder, it comes with a plethora of cards but unlike the previous versions, quests or mini campaigns will drive the story and determine what upgrades you get between scenarios. On the surface it all looks good, especially to those already familiar with the Thunderstone system. With the advent of games like Trains, Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure, and Tyrants of the Underdark, deck building is evolving nicely to incorporate other aspects of boardgaming. For the deck building, dungeon delving aficionado, this one should prove to be a winner. Backed at the Champion level to get the extra quests.

An evolution of Catan, or Catan meets Clans. There's really not a lot to distinguish it from the plethora of Euros already available other than cool meeples. It's Euro point gathering with the capability to throw in asymmetrical tribe abilities. Most of all I wanted the deluxe version with the cool meeples. Worth the $59 pledge for it. Looks to be good family fare with interesting tactical decisions.

So I never got caught up with the KS for the initial version of the game probably because I've been to busy playing Gloomhaven with my wife to undertake a new adventure. Anyway, with the KS reboot of the game and the addition of The 7th Continent: What Goes Up, Must Come Down and a few other extras like:
- The 7th Continent: BGG Promo Cards
- The 7th Continent: Comfort Creatures
- The 7th Continent: Facing the Elements
it was time to jump in on this system and get caught up. And apparently they're not publishing retail copies of the game, just KS backed one.

WG preys purely on FOMO. This is on kickstarter. Head's up! They say they're only printing 250 copies! Of course that doesn't remotely mean "they're only printing 250 copies EVER!". Seriously? They list an MSRP of $100. Why bother even listing an MSRP if it's not going "retail". BTW, that's what the R in MSRP stands for. And even if you are a retailer making a pledge, you still only get one game like everyone else, so it's not geared for retail sales. And if only 250 copies, why not number and sign them? The reason is WG is a bunch of fibbers or at the very least fabricators of an alternate truth and when the next game in the series is offered we'll see another 250+ of this one offered (repeat for the third offering in the series). But of course this list is about FOMOism so just take my money, allow me my cynicism, and I'll shut up.

As for the game itself, it looks very much like a more focused version of Columbia Games War of 1812 with P2P movement and combat resolved on a battle board. It's the smaller scale of the campaign being focused upon that's interesting. The next two in the series will focus on the battles along the Great Lakes and then later, the Gulf Coast. Overall, the Blue & Gray series trilogy of block games wasn't too bad so I'm hoping these will be no worse, and perhaps even tweak a few improvements into the system.

Expected Delivery: Apr 2018
Actual Delivery: Who the F knows given that WG hasn't hit a target delivery date yet.

BTW, as of this posting date, there's only about 50 copies remaining of the 250 offered. So join in on the FOMOism and go pledge now and gain that additional feeling of exclusivity (well at least until the next print run).
