This is a update/continuation of my list from last year where I track all my unplayed and underplayed games in my collection with the idea of trying to get them to the table so I can decide to keep them or not. I don't acquire a ton of new games each year and often when I do they get played fairly quickly but it doesn't mean a random good deal or gift adds a game to my collection that takes a while to get played.

Shelf of Shame 2017

I have three different groups of people I tend to play games with and so when I acquire games, I usually am doing so with the idea it'll fit into one or more of those groups. The first is a weekly meetup of experienced boardgamers where we usually play a mix of everything in 3+ player groups. The second is with my brother-in-law and father-in-law (and sometimes other family) where we usually play light/medium weight Euros, social deduction, and casual games. The last is with my wife where we play light games like Lost Cities and Patchwork.

I have some games where I've played it multiple times but the copy I own is unplayed. I don't count those for this list.

As I play these games and acquire new ones I'll update the list. I intend to refresh with a new list starting each year. The order of the list is simply alphabetical.

Why did I purchase this?: I was looking for something with a stock market aspect while also being light and easy to teach. Something I could play with my family or game group. It's also well rated.
What are my current thoughts?: Played this once and enjoyed it but it didn't hook me. Willing to give it one more shot.

Why did I purchase this?: I got this from the Kickstarter. I was attracted to the theme as it's so unique. Being a Phil Eklund game I knew going in it would be opaque but it also wasn't too expensive.
What are my current thoughts?: I'm not expecting this game to be an all time favorite but I at least want it to be interesting. Also I'm hoping there's at least some "game" there rather than just a simulation acting as a game. There's a good chance this will not stay in my collection forever. It's just a question if it will be a short stay or a bit longer.

Why did I purchase this?: This was actually gifted to me by someone that backed the Kickstarter and knew I liked games.
What are my current thoughts?: I've read through the rules but that's as far as I've got. The reviews on this are middling so it'll be hard for this to make it to the front of the line anytime soon but I am interested in giving it a go.

Why did I purchase this?: This was a Barnes & Noble special and the competitive puzzle aspect of the game sold me. This has the feel of a game that I would play a few times in a row and then be fine to keep on the shelf for a while.
What are my current thoughts?: I did a sort of half-play with my son soon after acquiring this that let me get an idea of how the game works (since you can "play" the game just fine solo but without other players it's not quite the same). I enjoyed that much of it but want to see how it does when you're under pressure to complete objectives.

Why did I purchase this?: This one is a multi-use card game with a fun theme. I've never played others games in this genre like Glory to Rome or Mottainai but they seem like games I could enjoy. I was willing to back this and find out.
What are my current thoughts?: I read the rules and looked at the components and while the game looks nice, I can't say I'm itching to get this one played. It's a small box at least so it's easy to bring with me to game night which increases the chance of getting played soon.

Why did I purchase this?: I have played this once a couple years ago and remember enjoying it. It had strong Euro elements but also a high level of player interaction through the placement of knights and I like games with player interaction. Then this was super cheap on Amazon so I couldn't resist.
What are my current thoughts?: I'm hoping this will live up to how I remember it. For the price I got it for though ($15?), even if it falls short I won't regret it. I just have to figure out how to get this played amongst the long list of other games I want to get to the table.

Why did I purchase this?: I really like Love Letter for what it is...a simple filler with some light deduction elements. Despite the success and inexpensive price, I still had never owned my own copy. I saw this one come out along with some good reviews and decided to splurge on this deluxified version.
What are my current thoughts?: I doubt this will stay on this list for too long. I just need to bring it out some more because this is a solid game. It has all the good things about Love Letter but adds in a welcome extra layer of options with the Insane mechanics. The cool art and nice components also make this an easier sell to others.

Update (2/10/18): I managed to get this one played not once but twice last month. The first time it was very short as it appeared someone won with the Cthulu power (but a rules check after the fact made me realize we messed one thing up...not a big deal). The second time was a full play with 5. I really quite like this game as the interacting powers and level of chaos works...but it's long if you play to the very end. That 5p game took well over an hour which is just too long for a game like this. Playing a full game with 3 I'm sure is fine. Even 4 probably isn't bad. But as you add more people, the wins spread out meaning more games so I would say at 5/6 you should just play to a time limit. Other than that, this game will stay in my collection. I haven't done it yet but you could easily play this version as regular Love Letter too as the sane powers are exactly the same. Just another reason to keep this since I don't own basic Love Letter. Into my collection!

Why did I purchase this?: I had my eye on the first Quartermaster General and then this WWI sequel came out with some positive reviews. I don't have any other game like this one so it fills a niche.
What are my current thoughts?: I really enjoyed my one play of this last year but it wasn't a game that I would say my game group enjoyed as much. It also has the issue where it's effectively a 5p-only game so it's not going to have a ton of chances to even come out. Despite my liking of the game, it might hit an arbitrary expiration date for me and go on the trade pile simply because it'll never get played anyway.

Update (3/4/18): The writing was on the wall for this one and I got a decent trade offer which I took. I do believe this is a very interesting and fun game but the 5-player-only(ish) limitation proved to be hard to overcome. That and this is not the type of game my group normally gravitates to. No point really in keeping a game, no matter how good, if you can never get it to the table. Traded Away

Why did I purchase this?: Got this one in a trade along with the Railways of Europe and Railways of Great Britain expansion maps. I'm pretty excited for it as it seems to scale well with player count depending on the maps and the economic/logistics aspect was the main selling point. I even like the fact the "advanced" version of the Great Britain map is supposed to be like a light version of an 18XX game.
What are my current thoughts?: I did get this played once last year and while it was fun, I can't say it was amazing. I also think this game probably gets better after playing a couple times and being able to value things better as those turn order auctions are important! I really want to get this played a couple more times but I also haven't been bringing this to my game group lately which might be more telling.

Why did I purchase this?: I like Race for the Galaxy but the learning curve keeps it on the shelf. This was a highly-rated game that's very similar but much easier to teach. Also I like Puerto Rico so the theme was an easy win.
What are my current thoughts?: I don't know why I haven't played this yet. Some kind of psychological barrier? Maybe I'm afraid I won't like it. For such a easy-ish, light-ish game I should just get this one tried and see if it deserves a spot on the shelf. Even if it's not a great game for myself, I can maybe see this being a good one for the family.

Why did I purchase this?: This was a Christmas gift when I was just starting to explore games beyond Catan.
What are my current thoughts?: This one is especially shameful since I've had it for so long and have hardly played it. The main thing that's kept this from being played is the fact that you need 4/5/6 people to really make it work. I can't bring myself to part with this anytime soon just because it has some sentimental value.

Why did I purchase this?: TTR is a solid overall game and the Dice Tower gave this expansion very positive reviews. Amazon dropped the price of this to $17 (I believe) so I snapped up a copy.
What are my current thoughts?: I played the Pennsylvania side once and the stocks really added a nice extra layer of depth. I'm also looking forward to eventually trying out the UK side. TTR is not a game that gets a ton of play with the people I play with but I don't ever see it leaving my collection. This expansion will surely see more play especially since my family will play these.

Why did I purchase this?: I Kickstarted this because the theme looked cool and Gamelyn games had created some pretty decent games before this. It was also a fairly low entry price of around $25.
What are my current thoughts?: My only play of this has been with the solo rules. There's a lot of game in this little box which is good and bad. In some ways it's a pretty straight-forward worker placement but there's multiple phases that workers are involved with which is a bit confusing. The reviews on this one has been mixed and so that along with my solo play has tempered my excitement for this one. I do want to get a full game in at least once before I decide what to do with it.

Why did I purchase this?: A birthday gift from last year. The asymmetrical card play and deep strategy (and very high ranking) all attracted me to this game.
What are my current thoughts?: Getting deeper 2p games to the table has proven to be tough so it's no surprise this has sat on my shelf. That's why it's the only heavy 2p-only game in my collection. Despite that, it'll stay in my collection just because I'm 95% sure I'll like this game once I actually get to play it. I also really like the theme and historical aspect of the game.

Why did I purchase this?: I really liked Letters From Whitechapel with the hidden movement system and theme but it had one huge problem...it was too damn long. Then I saw this game announced which was essentially a streamlined version of LfWC and I was sold.
What are my current thoughts?: The one game played so far was enjoyable and tense. Sure enough, the game feels like it'll be decided in about an hour either way. Hidden movement games seem to be a genre that I like playing more than my friends or family does so I don't expect to get this played too often.

Why did I purchase this?: Picked this up cheap from Amazon and had heard it's an overall solid heavier Euro. The multiuse cards in a heavier Euro was the main selling point.
What are my current thoughts?: I enjoy games that have fairly light rule sets while having depth and interesting decisions. I did get this game played once last year but at 2p which seems the least ideal player count. Even still, I really enjoyed it which makes we want to try this at 3 or 4 even more. I'm pretty sure this is a winner for me but it has a lot of competition getting to the table in that 3-4 player medium-heavy Euro space.

Update (3/4/18): Another victim of "this never gets played and I got a good trade offer". I wish I could have given this the plays it deserved but alas it wasn't meant to me. While I thought the theme was actually interesting (even if the game was semi-themeless) it was tough to convince others to play a dry Euro about unifying Japan. Traded Away
