This Geeklist chronicles some of the many games played at this weekly meeting of the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society.

The Columbus Area Boardgaming Society (CABS) is a club dedicated to boardgaming in central Ohio. The club started as a group of 15 friends back in 1997. Since then, CABS has grown to over 400 members with meetings almost every weekend. Our members play everything from Eurogames to Wargames to light family games. Our club also maintains a library of over a thousand games, which members can "check-out", just like any public library.

4p. Taught 3 new players. I think they all enjoyed it?

We actually almost ran out of tiles before the game was ended.

James is a natural azul tile layer. And yet he's never been to Iberia.

4p; all new. (I pushed this game to the table; my goal ever since the CABS newsletter went out earlier this week announcing it was in the library.)

Great game: card drafting, area control, coordinate grid, adorable art and puns, tons of bunny meeples. Pretty sure all of us quite enjoyed it.

I won with a strategy of trying to max out the strength of just a couple areas on the board. Dan came in second with the strategy of ignoring scoring areas on the board (he had ZERO points going into Final Endgame Scoring) and going for mass endgame, scoring cards (amassing 132 points!).

5p with only Expatriette as the non-Cauldron deck. The villain and environment decks were both total b-s, imo, and inaccurately self-described as being much lower difficulty than they were.
After 2 lousy slog plays of just taking forever to inevitably die/lose against newer Cauldron villains, I'm basically done/over Cauldron decks. Get 'em out of my sight -- do not want to play anymore games with Cauldron only decks, no thanks.

My first play of a Clank game ever. I enjoyed it!

The consensus seems to be "more is better" and space is preferred over the fantasy version, but usually I lean in the other direction. (I strongly prefer King of Tokyo over King of New York, and Forbidden Island over Forbidden Desert, for a couple examples.) I hope to try "regular" Clank sometime so I can compare the two.

Interesting idea (card-building and trick-taking combined) but too chaotic for my tastes. Other people seemed to like it a lot. Apparently the rule book isn't the best. Fortunately for me I didn't have to read it!

I'm not sold on the card-building concept quite yet, but this is my first taste of it. Maybe another game would be more to my liking.

My first play in a year plus, first time teaching; thankfully, just a 2 player game. So with the normal gaffes of first time teaching, it's a fantastic deck builder. I think it echoes a lot of Race for the Galaxy, which I have yet to play. Must play more.

I finally got a chance to try this cooperative deck-building game. I enjoyed it! Clear rules and abilities made in flow pretty smoothly. Gameplay followed a typical, "draw from the deck of bad things and then you get your turn" cooperative model.

There was a nice emphasis on sharing powers and effects with play partners. The villains were tough and frustrating, and I hated them as much as I had when reading the books. Lol.

This may be going on my "to buy" list.

I learned and played this light game to celebrate the birthday of its designer Eric B. Vogel.

Thematically, it's about giant monsters who attack cities around the world, but rather than playing the heroes who save the cities, we play the heartless corporations who profit from rebuilding the city and from creating new products for the public developed from the scavenged remains of the giant monsters.

Each turn has two simple choices: buy a building or trash it to activate previously constructed buildings, which generated increases of money, technology, or monster threats; sometimes of more than one of these.

It took about an hour with three people. Feelings were mixed, but I think the consensus was that it was "OK" but nothing great. In the one playthrough, there didn't seem to be challenging decision points. Usually, if you could afford to buy, you did. Otherwise you discard the card that gave you the most resources. There were a few times that I chose which card to discard based on how it affected my opponents, but usually it didn't matter much.

I like the concept, I like the basic mechanic that often my actions helped my opponents, but I didn't feel I had as much control over it as I wanted. That could be first play ignorance...I'm not sure.

4p, all new to it.

I'm not a fan of timed games. As soon as James started explaining the rules, I was "ugh, shades of Time 'n' Space". So many sand-timers. It was not bad. I suppose for a timed cooperative game it was good. But it was very chaotic and messy; it had a ton of bits with set-up and cleanup; and it seemed like the difficulty levels were a bit too high.

We scored just the bare minimum number of VPs to win, and then lost 1 VP due to being 1 coin short of paying the final wages for our sand-timer employees. (I think we all agreed to blame James for the loss due to undercooking/overcooking so many of his dishes.)

A full 4 players took us 2.5 hours, despite, seriously, not playing slow. I lost by 30, and I was second. Hmmm. The Gunpowder Tower should just be eliminated from the game; it is grossly overpowered. And yes, I know the rule about excluding place tiles, but we had a first timer, so I didn't do that. It hurts.

4p. Again on standard set-up/difficulty. (I'm ready for more of a challenge or variant.) 2 new players that I graciously let Erin take the effort of teaching the game to.

We won without any real concerns or destruction. There was a lot of blight on the board but almost all of it was due to Erin's spirit powers not due to the Invaders. Game didn't last long enough for my Serpent spirit to ramp up and do much; though I did assist James in having a couple huge turns.
