1. Board Game: The Ungame [Average Rating:2.78 Overall Rank:17664]

Play or pass?
Pass. Here’s the thing: the same part of me that loves these weird, old games wants to tell you how lucky you are to find The Ungame, pick it up and play it with your close people. How so many issues in this world could be solved by more communication. How there is an inherent nobility in giving a voice to those that would not otherwise speak up. How difficult it is to fault The Ungame in pursuit of these lofty goals.

But The Ungame is for ages 5-105; it is not trying to win you over, and it doesn’t. Its parts were sealed because it was unplayed; it is daring you to play it, and you can’t. It is called The Ungame; it is not trying to be a game, and it isn’t.

Finding The Ungame at thrift is not uncommon. I have seen it probably eight times since I bought it. And if you do try out The Ungame, you have my enthusiastic support. Does anyone care what you have to say about earthquakes or tornadoes? Of course not. But say it anyway because that is the (un)game.

Save yourself and pass. My gaming group started out charmed by the plasma trays, the tokens and the gigantic board. It took a couple of turns before the realization of our next 30 minutes or so began to set in. My friends have a lot of patience for my games, and I am concerned that this one set me back a bit in their favor. I should probably say something nice about them to make up for it.

Play. For one thing this game is worth a decent amount of money. For another thing even if you only pull this game out once a year around Halloween, that’s a pretty awesome tradition. And if you decide to assign curses or luck to the losers or winners, well, then I don’t really have anything to do with that. But spin well, friends!

If you find this game used, make sure that it contains the skeleton bits for four full skeletons. Most of the used versions are missing the fangs, which does not impact gameplay. And the fangs are old and gross at best.

Play those pounds off! Heavenly Body is trying to do a lot: roll and move, betting but with real-life exercise (!), chance cards, random dice rolling, tracking your weight. This game is a mess, but more importantly it’s a treasure in the they-could-never-make-this-today kind of way. The journey to the scale is long and lends itself to repetition, but with the right crowd you will find laughter, wtf moments and the unsung challenge of safely removing soy beans from your jersey without losing them.

Big time play. You know by now whether you enjoy this type of game or not, but we always laugh throughout and it will always be welcome at the table. I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon Ad Liners and added it to my collection. The game is not unheard of; if you are interested in it, as of this writing you can pick it up online for more than a thrift score but still a reasonable amount if you hunt a little. I have only ever seen it thrifting the one time, but keep your eyes peeled there too!

Pass, friends. This game is dull and does not save itself with the rare venture into physical humor. There have been times in the past that Mad magazine pokes fun at its own audience with its merchandise. I can only assume this is one of those examples. Shock value is not enough, and something valuable was lost here.

Play. This game is fun, novel and easy on the eyes. The mechanism is clever and wonderfully on theme. When autumn rolls around in my area and the leaves and light levels and my palette start to change and the weather becomes chilly, Mystic Skull is just the thing. In the fall give me tights, sweaters, whiskey, spooky decorations and Mystic Skull.

Play. Even having never been familiar with the details of the book series this was a decent deduction game. It relied on the skill of asking questions so it felt like a mixture of deduction and word game. The option of creativity is also a nice break because it doesn’t put you on the spot but allows you to really fill in the details of what you are solving if you would like to. I can see this game being campy fun for the murderino crowd, where one can draw on their collective knowledge of true crime to really paint a picture. Perhaps even asking your fellow players to guess the suspect based on your details of the crime.

This is not the best deduction game you will ever play (hopefully), but if you find it in the wild it is well worth picking up if your group appreciates deduction, storytelling, nostalgia or true crime!

Play. If you could wrap up being a young girl in 1989 into a box, it would probably look a lot like this. And yes, that’s a good thing. From the blue notebook paper rules to the self-described “rad” music to the inane conversations taking place between teens – this game is a lot of fun for a light-hearted walk down memory lane.

Girl Talk Date Line is less of a game and more of an experience, and certainly there is no meaty strategy involved. Your outcome will depend a great deal on luck. But if you have the game then you are probably lucky anyway.

Play. The barrier to entry for this game is virtually nil, and it does lead to laughter, conversation and teasing. I am not a believer that this game will actually shock you by the responses of your loved ones, and if it does you are likely just hypothetically shocked by hypothetical answers; you will be fine. But I do think surprises are in store. Plus, you guys, the 1984 version is super pretty.

Play. I do love a quirky game and in the words of everyone’s favorite Trailer Park Manager, “You can’t change the spots on a **** leopard.” Rest in peace John Dunsworth.

One of the criticisms of this game is that it may not have a ton of longevity, and I can see that. But the combination between cards does do a good job of increasing replayability. It’s probably not a perennial game that will hit your table weekly or even monthly. But still it’s a fun, sarcastic little game and we will definitely play again.

Pass. Maybe my hopes were too high with the concept, but ultimately I was disappointed. I started out enjoying Vanity Chase and kept slowing it down by sending people backward when I could. None of my fellow gamers seemed to appreciate the game as much. OK they mostly couldn’t stand it. I wish more consideration was given to the cards’ relevance in the future. Then we might have enjoyed it more 30 years later.

By the time the game ended we were beyond ready for it to be over. I think we even cheered when someone won, so that was nice.

Play. Even people who do not enjoy party games often find themselves playing party games just because of the nature of holidays and get togethers with a wide variety of people. This is not a bad choice for a group party game but supports only six players. I played it a couple of times recently and realized that the game may not have great staying power. I’m interested in creating new pictures to breathe new life into the game.

Play for sure! Our game went a bit long perhaps, but I cry-laughed at least once and we gained an entire new term for our gaming – Skippy! We were recently playing Arkham Horror and Keri rolled so poorly that all of my instincts wanted to hand her a Skippy card. Instead I heard Bill tell her, “Don’t get lippy, Skippy.” That’ll do.

Pass. One of the things that bugged me about The Miss America Pageant Game was the seeming abandonment of the theme at the end. It makes no sense for camera time to put a finalist out of the running, or that the camera focuses on a finalist and then she is toast. Or that the winner is complete chance. I think even something as simple as each finalist spinning and then drawing that number of random cards and adding up the points at least gives some semblance of their performance behind it.

Pass. Wacky Blasters looks so fun and just ridiculous enough to be amazing.

But in the end, it was painful. Just to drive this point home, I’ll give you more context. We played this on a game night that Bill lovingly called Baby Game Night, hoping that by playing some of our more children-targeted games in one evening we can in turn rid our basement of some of the larger game boxes. Wacky Blasters is not the worst game we played that night, but it was not the best and it was the only one we decided not to finish. That was the lowest bar we have at our disposal, I assure you. Shame on you, Wacky Blasters.

Pass. There is talk of house rules to make the game better, and you could come up with a few of them quite easily to improve gameplay. But I don’t think it would save the game. The best thing I can think of is different blackout boards that limit the playable game board, and expands the board as you go through turns. Kind of like Inner Circle. You would place all the blackout boards right over the game board and it would limit which spaces are available for play. Then that play area would expand – a little – by lifting the top blackout board and revealing the next one for the next turn. That would prevent the 15 word sentences as well as force creativity in a more realistic sentence structure.

Oh gosh I kind of want to try that. Bill is going to kill me.
