Hi folks,

It had been bugging me for a while that most of my games had super high ratings. My average game score was about 8.5. I had about 30 games on 10! That made no sense to me, because I don't like those games all the same.

So I finally went through the lot and re-rated them and re-ranked them.

I was a bit stuck at first. How do I compare Rhino Hero to a wargame?

I then figured, it's really about how much I love a game. It's not about how good a game is.

The games in this list are all ones I rated 8.00 or more. Which means, I love 'em!

For a small box game with mini cards, this is quite the table hog! I like that it moves at a good pace and is a smarter set collection game than some of the usual suspects at this play length.

My wife and I both prefer it to the board game!

Close to the worst theme I can imagine! Semi co-op and if you are being naughty and look like losing you can throw the game by making the world overheat. Who would do such a mean-spirited, low thing? (cough)

After than unfortunate episode, my wife and I signed a non-aggression pact to not throw the game in future. I love racing up the various technology tracks trying to work an advantage, or trying to sneak ahead by attending conferences.

My wife looked at me in horror when I told my son he could have "our" copy. And my wife doesn't even like dice rolling! I love the manic rush around, try and find new chambers, find treasure, remove curses, and that you do all this in ten minutes. My son got to keep the copy after all - my wife and I got the big box version!

This is a great game to bling on a budget. A nice set of blue buttons and away you go! I like the purity and simplicity of this game on top of the neat Tetris-like puzzle and working out how best to run my button economy. I like the purity so much that surely no other game of its ilk will be as good...

It turns out that I like Indian Summer a chinchilla's hair's breadth more than Patchwork. It isn't as pure. It doesn't have a button economy. But I feel a bit like I am playing a fruit machine. There are these funny looking holes in the tiles and if you manage to line them up over treasures (nuts, berries, etc.), then, kerching! You get a payout of treasures, which you can then spend on cool stuff, like placing an extra tile your go or nabbing one of your opponent's tiles. It looks rather beautiful too, from the dark, earth tones of the forest floor to the gorgeous cute animals. The online pics don't do it justice. Unless you have a 4k monitor, perhaps.

Area control, worker placement, variable player powers, tons of plastic miniatures, thick cardboard, metal doubloons. That's a great starting point. It cost a king's ransom at the time but nowadays you could hardly throw a feast for the price.

Apparently I am an abbot of a medieval monastery competing with other abbots to amass the greatest library of sacred books. Tosh! This is about bluffing, timing, manipulating market value of suits, and general sneakery. Also notable for including dice that you don't roll. Which I imagine is some kind of silk glove slap in the face for thematic games. Like, "this is all dice are good for..."

I imagine this is how designer Tom Cleaver's pitch went with AEG: "I want to do a game where you get your tomb ready for when you snuff it. I want some cool items you can buy, like a brain hook."

"Sounds great, Tom! Have you got any other ideas?"

This game has lot of card trashing, cool card powers, great depth for the number of cards, and a great tension of you wanting to keep a card in your deck so you can use it versus entombing it so you can have a wild time in the afterlife.

So there I am, pinging little arrows at huge beasts from afar, with the arrows bouncing off their steel-like hides, while enemies swarm around me and start biting my arms.

My fellow adventurer, with bulging biceps and an axe the size of fat donkey, is running around exploring treasure chests drunk on the excitement of collecting loot.

I'm bleeding to death and we still haven't beaten Odius Grump in Quest 1.

I'm coming back next time with my own iron donkey.

There may be poverty in this game. Let's not beat around the bush. But it is better to be poor and have nice buildings to look at, than to be poor and have squalid buildings to look at. This game makes me feel like I am doing my bit.

Crate upon crate of cod, tuna and shrimps, all coming off my wife's jolly fleet of fishing vessels. Me, I'm twiddling my thumbs looking at an empty lobster trap.

This game is so much fun when you get your engine going and the fish pile up on your boats.

It can be brutal if you haven't got a clue. Fortunately for landlubbers like me there is the Arctic Bounty expansion, which makes it a little less cutthroat.

As I wade out deeper in the sea of wargames, up to my ankles, I am already appreciating that a light wargame like Memoir has its plus points. 30 minutes to play a great fun battle. With cool plastic minis. A ton of expansions, that can add a bit more complexity. Historical scenarios. Not bad for half an hour.

The game that got me into solo wargaming. And that was without the highly rated solo expansion, which I have not got around to playing yet after 20 plays! I'm just having a blast as-is.

I like that about this: if you are a noob wargamer looking at solo, you can see how you get on with playing both sides, and if you don't take to it, it has one of the highest rated solo systems.

A radical new style of game from Uwe Rosenberg where you have vegetables instead of animals. It can get thinky at times figuring out which customers to serve, which vegetables to grow, which to buy off stalls, and what order to do things in that will earn you the most money. It's an epic tale of vegetable supply and demand that only a top Euro can pull off.

Has the table presence I thought Terra Mystica should have had. The final round is a bit of a farce at two player, where you spread your people far and wide to pretend you are master of all you survey, even though you'd get a good kicking if there was another round.

Still, it makes for a fascinating, very strategic end to the game, and in that sense, it gives the fitting end I think this great game deserves.

I might love Scythe even more, if only it had a campaign mode...

Gosh, this game can do really nasty things, like SHUT DOWN YOUR ROLLERCOASTER RIDE for a WHOLE TURN <faint>, or FIRE ONE OF YOUR STAFF MEMBERS <scream!>

Unless you have a card that protects against it, that is. But that card also has a nice, free upgrade option. Hmmmm. Play it safe, or make my mighty mega roller coaster even more of a beast?

This game can be quite nasty, in an age where many games look upon this as a distinct no-no.

But it's up to you players. You don't have to go all out war and you probably won't, unless your idea of a thrilling theme park is a merry go round, balloon seller and donut-making machine.

Scratches my Theme Park the video game itch, and then some!
