I tend to ignore the, often thematic, in-game rule for how to choose starting player and just do it randomly.

The "0" on the die is a "zero". No, stupid stupid stupid. Horses don't move zero when the die is rolled! I make it a "2", which stupidly isn't on the die at all and should be.

We don’t end the game instantly when the end game condition is met. It seems to give too huge of an advantage for the players who get 1 more turn than everyone else. We play that we finish out the final round and then the game is over (If the last Colony is taken, you won’t be able to buy one, but at least you can buy something else worth points).

I always leave out Mrs Cake but ONLY in a 2 player game. It gives the person who plays her too much of an advantage when deducing who the opponent is. I'm kinda surprised when Rahdo pulled this card in his runthrough went through with something so vastly broken as I almost didn't get it due to that but I did.

I never play that you put $500 on Free Parking.

Every once in a while, I'll play that if someone doesn't buy a property when they land on it, we put it up for auction.

We always play that you only do a horror check the first time you come in range of a monster. Not every mythos phase that you’re in range. It cuts down the game time by quite a bit also.

I usually ignore the Crown of Command's command spell as it lengthens the game for no reason. However if people are diehard Talisman fans (and I know a fair amount who LOVE the game as much as I do) I will play normally.

While we normally play with the current-version ruleset, we prefer the original rule that 2-tile cities ("taco towns", as we call them, given their shape) only count for 2 points, not 4.

This allows for more chances for larger cities where other people can try to shoehorn in, and potentially reduces the luck of good city-tile drawing.

It's a race game, but there's no equal number of turns and no compensation for not going first.

Play until all players have had an equal number of turns, most points wins. Tiebreaker, most cards left in the palette. Second tiebreak, most cards over all.

This is a bit of a catch all, as there are many games with variable upgrades that change from game to game where I will pull out some of them that don't fit my playstyle:

I don't use this particular tile in Whistle Stop ... There are plenty of upgrade tiles included in the game. There's always variety, and this one just adds to the playtime, so there's no need to go there.

I generally dislike cards or mechanics in games that allow people to search through the entire draw/discard pile, though.

The "Dark Ritual" rule:
If two necromancers are in the same zone or adjacent, they instantly escape.

Escaping Necromancers:
This is an instant loss if there are too many spawn points on the board. There will be in almost every scenario.

Spawning Necromancers:
When a necromancer is spawned, an extra spawn token is placed in the same zone and you immediately draw a spawn card for it.

In total:
When you spawn a necromancer, draw another card. If it's another necromancer, you lose.

I ignore drafting and just have people pick and choose whichever character. Due to the lack of balance in the game nobody will focus on one specific character. As Tom Vasel said: The best character is the one that annoys your opponent the most.
