The new year started with a lot of cool gaming. ELDRITCH HORROR, an all-time favorite saw two attempts to save the world, one of them even successful! And of course FIREFLY – THE GAME: one of the best sandbox gamer ever made, and currently the top game of Mrs. PzVIE and me. We also introduced a new player to IMPERIAL ASSAULT and played three missions in a row with him – he obviously liked it!

As a new game, PLANET OF THE APES made an introduction to my table, and – considering that I’m a fan of ELDER SIGN too – was very much liked. The game borrows a lot of mechanisms from ES, but at the same time, re-tells the story of the movie very closely. So it’s full of theme, dice rolling, and atmosphere, and it’s Sci-Fi/Fantasy too! Just what I love in a game!

In preparation of me taking the reins of a GM once again, I studied the rules for the STAR WARS: EDGE OF THE EMPIRE rulebook closely, and to get a little more familiar with them, I ran my wife through a small scenario called RENDESVOUZ AT ORD MANTELL, and we both liked the system instantly. This “story-telling-dice” mechanism brings a whole new level to role playing; no longer is a die roll a success or not, but also added events, botches, and thrillin’ heroics (to quote another Sci-Fi setting).

Again we tried our luck with STAR TREK: FIVE YEAR MISSION, and again, we failed miserably; not even managing the Ensign level. This game becomes harder and harder every time we play it … wow

All in all: a wonderful gaming month. On to February! meeple

7   To Delve the Dungeon Deep NEW!

The highlight of this month was clearly ELDER SIGN. Not only did we play six games against various Ancient Ones (most of them in Gates of Arkham Mode), but also the world’s leading experts on this game visited us in our Gaming Dungeon: Julia (Scarlet Witch) and her husband showed us how this game is really supposed to be played!

We also revisited 7 WONDERS, and of course, we also played FIREFLY –THE GAME. Still my current #1 cardboard; an absolutely awesome experience. We also played EMPIRES: GALACTIC REBELLION again, and it still is a great game … apart from the graphics and that it is not Star Wars themed – although it should be!!! I also played SALMON RUN again and remembered that this is in fact a quick, fun and surprisingly thematic deckbuilder!

On the 18xx front, there was 1835 (an all-time “10”) as well as 18CZ (another “10”), and also 18Africa for the first time; however, this was a disappointment and won’t see any more playings ... not a “10”, more of a “5” …

On the roleplaying side of life, we started the last book of the RISE OF THE RUNELORDS campaign and I really hope to see a great finale. The second campaign saw its second playing and the newbie characters had to deal with their first dungeon …

 6   We B4 Goblins! NEW!

This month, One Deck Dungeon found its way into my collection, and after four plays with my wife, we immediately ordered the expansion. Our Rise of the Runelords RPG campaign is now near its conclusion: we started the sixth and last book in the series. Also, my second (newbie) group finished it's third adventure.

Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats was a no-brainer to buy, as Firefly: The Game is currently our number one game. Browncoats is more in the camp of Star Wars: Imperial Assault, but misses the awesomeness of that game somehow: good and solid work, but something is missing. Nevertheless, a very good game and I will surely buy and play the expansions.

I also finally got my hands on a copy of 18Dixie with 18MS and 18GA and the first play was as great as I expected. Another interesting experience was This War of Mine: The Board Game; IMHO a typical kickstarter: this game could be great if it would be streamlined by a good developer. Oh, and I bought Meeple Circus: forget Jenga, this is cute, fun, short, and silly.
