G'day!

Last weekend, I attended CanCon, one of, if not THE best board gaming conventions in Australia. This was my 6th year, and, like last year, I decided to keep a record of what I played, who I played it with, and what happened for use in a geeklist.

Special thanks to Therese, Daniel, and Ben:

I kept scores and thoughts from each of my friends as we played much like last year. Last year, one of my friends decided to subvert this system by scoring every single game a "7ish"; in protest. This year we came to a compromise - "thumbs up" or "thumbs down". Suffice to say... my friend still managed to subvert this system by giving every single game (even games they deemed "terrible") a "thumbs up", weaselling out of giving any kind of opinion, so, I have decided to put words in their mouth. Cruel, harsh words. It's ok. They probably won't even read this. Instead of scores for this friend, I have listed comments - some of the comments are things he said, some are exaggerations, and some are completely made up. I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which.

This isn't so much a collection of reviews of games as it is a story of what I did on this great weekend. I hope you enjoy - let me know what games I missed in the library and if you agree/disagree with our assessments!

Oh, and, if you enjoyed the geeklist, check out some of my other geeklists:

Friday Early Morning - Australia Day!

As is tradition, we wake up first thing in the morning - 4:45am, and are out the door by 5am. The car is already packed with cola, snacks and treats.

This year is a bit different - for once, we'r not all traveling in the same car. Ben is going to meet us at the Con, due to circumstances too boring to go into.

We get to Cancon, and, after the initial hour or so of swooping buys and huge wallet regret, we finally make our way to the Games Library. The first game we play is a game I've been very eager to try and show to Ben.

We played Clank! last year, but, Ben was absent last year. I remember distinctly thinking "this is a game Ben would like". And, when I heard there was a better "space" version, I insisted we try this one first.

Not everyone made it out alive...
Winner: Ben
Thoughts: This certainly didn't disappoint - I enjoyed it a lot more than the original Clank!, but, still not enough to rush out to buy it (I already own too many games that do very similar things). Therese, on the other hand - DID. She rushed out and purchased a copy. Ben... wasn't as impressed as I thought he would be - as a traditional Magic player, I think the deckbuilding wasn't complex or refined enough for his tastes. Which, I think is probably a valid criticism. He said a lot, so, I can't recall his exact arguments - but, as a BOARD GAME, I still think this is tops.
Scores:
Me: 8.5/10
Therese: 8.5/10
Ben: 7.5/10
Daniel: Thumbs up; "Callan is my best friend, and I will give him $100 the next time I see him."

Friday - Mid-Morning

At this point, the library is starting to fill up. All the premium games that people are keen to try are already booked out... but, that's ok - there's not too much I'm super keen to try - so, I have a look at what IS available. This game has a really pretty cover, and, a quick search on BGG reveals it's decently rated. Plus, it looks cool, so, we give it a try!

Winner: Ben
Thoughts: This game was... fairly forgettable, actually. Which is a shame, it had great quality components and was a very exciting theme... but, the game itself fell pretty flat. It certainly wasn't a bad game - but, it wasn't a "fantastic game", at least, that was the general consensus.

Friday - Early-Mid Afternoon - Lunch time.

I packed my lunch, but, everyone else rushes out to go grab some awful Con food. I decide to read the rules for the next game while I eat - and, ooh boy, that was a mistake. I'd seen some reviews for this game and was really keen to try it... but, the rules were a bit more complicated than I anticipated. I explained the game as best I could, but, we were all looking up a lot of rules and eventually Daniel and Ben read the rules themselves because of how many moving parts this thing had.

...and, of course. We missed a rule. A pretty big one. We were placing employees (staff?) on the same level as the round/game end track, not the track above it. And, as we were purchasing said staff, the game was... unnecessarily drawn out. We STARTED this game at about 3pm, after going through all the rules and learning the game. We had a dinner reservation at 6pm. We had to cancel that. We didn't finish until about 8:30pm... we didn't realize we got the rule wrong until quite late, and thought it was just a really long game.

A common sight during this game; Ben looking up some rules
Winner: Ben
Thoughts: Eeeeeh. Playing this for some 5 hours definitely was no ones fault except our own. Probably mine, if you want to point fingers, given I was the one explaining the rules in the first place. We were all very tired and slightly annoyed by the end of it. BUT - it certainly wasn't a bad experience. I mean, the length it took was criminal, but, again, that was our own fault for missing that very simple rule. But, the game itself was still quite good. I think our stuff-up left a bad taste in our mouths, so, maybe it didn't score quite as good as it should have.

Friday - late evening It's well past dinner at this point and we're all starving. We jump in the car and instead of heading to our traditional "Pizza At the Guild" on the first night of the Con (whose kitchen has closed by this point) we head to a random part of Canberra. There's a Japanese restaurant there that Ben wants to try.

...a super expensive looking restaurant... people inside are wearing dinner suits and, a quick glance at the menu makes us realize in our con t-shirts and shorts that this isn't the place for us. Across the road is a burrito joint, so, we grab a quick bite and head back to the Con.

Ben grabs a copy of Azul - he has heard good things and is super keen to try it. I've also heard good things... and, from what I've heard, I'm thoroughly disinterested, but, I'm more than happy to give it a go!

Never seen Therese so bored with a board game
Winner: Me!
Thoughts: This game was good! Honestly, I was expecting it to be, given all the hype. Despite dominating in this game, it still very much is not a game I'm interested in though. The mechanics were neat, and it is a fun abstract game, but, it's just not what I'm looking for in my board game collection right now. I'd certainly play it again though. Ben is very impressed... but, Therese HATES this game. Ok, well, no, not hates, but she definitely doesn't like it.

Friday - Very Late Evening It's well after 10:30pm, and, although the games library doesn't close until 12am, we figure there isn't really enough time to learn, start and finish any kind of big game, so, I grab a quick filler off the shelf. I actually saw this game available for purchase for $10 - the reason it was on special was because all the boxes were damaged. A friend of mine who was at the con to buy stuff (but not play) picked up a copy. I almost did too - a Vlaada game for $10? Yes please! But, after seeing the condition of the box, and, from what I knew about the game... I decided that this really wasn't WORTH $10 - at least, not with a damaged box. I'd only be buying this to have in my collection, I didn't think I'd enjoy it, and, there was no point buying a game "for my collection" if it was in any kind of bad condition. So, I decided to pass. Part of me was regretting passing, so, I decided to play it to see if I had made the right choice. I think I probably did.

Saturday - Early Morning - We decide to head back to our hotel a little early - Great Western trail having drained most of our energy. Looking at the play log, we realize we've only played 5 games on the first day, and resolve to get a good nights sleep to knuckle down and knock some games out of the park tomorrow.

By the time we sort out parking, get in to our rooms and calm down it's already after midnight. We wake up early in the morning, grab some breakfast and are back at Cancon Saturday morning before the doors have even opened.

This time, it's straight for the Games Library. For once, there's nothing I'm super keen to try going into the games library. Captain Sonar, maybe, but, unless we find another 4 people, it probably isn't going to happen, and, with how noisy the con is it probably isn't a good idea here anyway. At this stage, there's enough games that I've heard good things about to not really be picky. So, I let Ben choose the next game - and, he's keen for some Inis.

I've seen some reviews of Inis, and, with myself owning Cyclades and Ben owning Kemet, we both have high hopes for this. Seems like "maybe slightly peaceful cyclades/kemet" maybe.

Me in my strongest position all game and I still couldn't do anything useful
Winner: Therese
Thoughts: Therese had a real come from behind victory - Ben and Daniel were neck and neck most of the game, and after they spent all their energy trying to stop each other, it was pretty easy for Therese to sweep in and win it all. I had been trailing the whole game and didn't stand much of a chance and had very little impact in the game, but, I had a good time doing my own thing. It felt very much like a matagot hybrid in the same vain as Cyclades and Kemet, as to be expected. It was fun. BUuut. It probably involved way more fighting than I expected it to. And, with both Cyclades and Kemet not nearly hitting the table enough, this was an easy pass for all involved.

Saturday - Mid-morning - I purchased Kingdomino late last year, and, we all love it. But, after I purchased it I found out there was a bigger, more advanced version called Queendomino, and, I was worried I had jumped the gun in getting Kingdomino. I certainly wasn't going to go out and buy Queendomino... but, I definitely wanted to give it a go to see if I'd made a horrible mistake with my initial purchase.

Mutually assured destruction - Therese and I were both chasing Ocean tiles
Winner: Daniel
Thoughts: The consensus around the table is "Kingdomino is better". At least, amongst the others it is. The argument for this is that Kingdomino is a quick simple filler, and is better at doing that than Queendomino is at being a more "complicated game". I liken this argument to my groups argument about why King of Tokyo is better than King of New York (which was an assessment I initially disagreed with). Similarly, I'm not sure if I agree with their assessment here either. Queendomino does everything Kingdomino does and more! Buuut.... actually, it doesn't. It's a similar game, but, some of the tile distributions are pretty different with fields and oceans - hunting for crowns is a lot more competitive in Queendomino, and, personally, I feel it's for this reason that Kingdomino is the better game, as Queendomino tries to replace that flexibility with other complicated buildings and strategies which... just fall a bit flat. While Queendomino has a lot going on, I feel it has sacrificed some of the flexibility Kingdomino has in adapting it's main strategic element. Still, Queendomino is fine, and, if I owned that instead of Kingdomino I certainly wouldn't lament NOT owning Kingdomino.

The game after final scoring (temple tiles were flipped as we counted them
Winner: Daniel won
Thoughts: Wow, what a hit! As we were finishing up, a passerby asked us if we liked this. Ben had already been talking about going out to go grab a copy. The passerby mentioned he had seen it on sale for $20. We all immediately got up and left the young gentleman, hunting for copies of this great game. In the end, even though it was only $20 (and the box was in perfect condition), I decided to pass. Both Ben and Therese insisted they were buying it, and, there were certainly enough copies for me to ALSO buy it, but I really couldn't justify the purchase. I had already spent more than I intended to on board games, and, almost every game day I have Ben or Therese is around for, so, there is always going to be an opportunity to play this game with them around. Ben also managed to grab the last copy of the expansion for this too for $5. Suffice to say, we all really liked this game - check it out if you get a chance.

Saturday Early Afternoon - We all grab some lunch after our Cacao purchases. It's dirty con food for me today. I consume a single gross hot dog. $5. Yuck. But, we power on and by the time I get back, Therese has decided to bust out a game she purcahsed. Sakura. It has a Japanese looking theme, so, I'm not surprised - she and I are secretly at war to see whose collection has the most Japanese themed games... she, I think, is probably winning.

...we'll just see who has more GOOD Japanese themed games.

Saturday - mid afternoon - well, it looks like we're opening purchases, and, having already seen people busting out their own copies of this game around the games libray, I decide to crack mine. I had passed on this game before Christmas - it was relatively new at that point and some of the impressions I got from it was "a bit of take-that", which really puts me off. But, having seen a couple more reviews since then, I've concluded that the take that nature of the game isn't at all malicious - it's just part of the game. So, I'm keen to give it a shot!

Such a good looking game
Winner: Ben
Thoughts: This game is GORGEOUS. Or, I think a Daniel put it "incredibly striking". Ben disagrees - annoyingly colour blind, even though all the trees are different shapes he complains that the 3d nature of the game obscures important pieces or placements. He is the only one with such a complaint. We played the basic 3-round game of this - everyone concludes that to get a real good feel for this game, that another game will need to be played (but, that will have to wait until after the con). I think for everyone, the scores here are initial impression scores more than anything else, and most of us expect our actual scores will go up or down significantly with future plays.
Scores:
Me: 7.5/10
Therese: 7.5/10
Ben: 6.5/10

Saturday - late afternoon - We don't want to miss dinner like we did yesterday, and, it's getting close to dinner time, so, we decide to pick a filler. Ben missed Cancon last year, so, he missed the MARVEL that was Junk Art. Junk Art was a pretty big hit with all of us last year, and, we decide to bring it out again. Therese has been looking for a copy of the wooden version of the game for ages (she doesn't want the plastic version). Normally, our group hugely shys away from any kind of dexterity based game, but, this game is just too charming not to play again and introduce to our very uncoordinated grumpy gamer friend Ben.

When in doubt... tape measure
Winner: 3 games, multiple winners (Ben, Therse and Daniel won separate games each)
Thoughts: I've played this game before, and, it was just as silly fun as before. My thoughts haven't changed much. Ben, however, is hugely impressed. For what it is and what it aims to achieve, Ben declares that this is the best game of its kind. It's not a type or genre he necessarily WANTS to play again or often, but, if he did, he would certainly pick this.
Scores:
Me: 7/10 (same as last year)
Therese: 9/10
Ben: 9/10
Daniel: thumbs up "7ish."

Saturday - mid evening - After Junk Art, we quickly rush out to grab some dinner. Saturday's at Cancon is traditionally Dumplings at Dicksons - and, this year is no exception. We weren't going to miss dumplings like we did pizza at the guild, and, everyone is hanging out for a really good meal. We meet up with Bens brother for dinner, and dinner is amazing as always. We hangout for a bit and then part ways with Bens brother before heading straight back to the Games Library.

I decide to pick up a game called Shakespear. It had been on my "to try" list the last two cancons in a row. Never got around to it - so, I decided this was the year I'd finally getting around to playing it.

Thoughts: This game... actually fell kind of flat. I'm not sure if it was the hype over the years or not, but, generally everyone didn't have much of a good time with this. Can't blame our mood too much either, we'd just had a fantastic dinner and were all energized. Maybe we were getting sick of each other, or maybe the game just... wasn't that great. Either way, this was a boring little Euro. Not a bad game, but, certainly not a standout one.

Saturday Late Evening - it's starting to get late, and, while there is time for another big game, I decide to crack open another one of my purchased games. Magic Maze - had heard fantastic things from the community here, and, was buying this one blind to all reviews. All I knew was the basic premise of adventures in a mall - didn't even know much about the main mechanics of this game. Hopefully I picked a winner!

We escaped the horror of... THE MALL!
Winner: Played 4 times. Lost 2, won 2.
Thoughts: WOW! What an awesome game! Great pick! Holy crap this was fun! Everything about this game was amazing, and, we only got up to the 3rd scenario. Each player being responsible for their own action, and staring intently at each other and placing the action pawn in front of people was hilarious. Everyone agreed - this was a game to replace "Escape: curse of the temple" - which, I actually have mixed feelings on. I love Escape, but, no one else in my group wants to play it much so it doesn't hit the table much. This game feels very similar to Escape, but, without the frantic die rolling. Its short, quick, stressful, but, a bit more streamlined than Escape. Everyone agrees, I picked a winner.

Sunday - Early morning - After our few games of magic maze, we pack it up and head back to the hotel. I purchased a copy of this game blind, on a single recommendation here from BGG. I'm not sure what I'm expecting, but, we planned for this game to be our main game for Sunday. I've got a "TIME Stories" kind of vibe from it, but, when Daniel and I open it early to check out the rules, what I find inside is certainly NOT what I'm expecting. A map? An actual PHONE BOOK? What the hell? This isn't a boardgame... it's so much more than that. Daniel and I are BOTH very excited, but, I can see a problem. As excited as I am for this, I can already tell; this won't be a game for Ben. Still. We should give it a shot - worst comes to worst, Daniel and I can two-player the rest of the cases later.

No spoilers here - just a really complicated map of London
Winner: We solved the murder! 35 points
Thoughts: Well, I loved this. This was really clever, and pretty great. We bumbled around a lot - we didn't actually visit the crime scene at all, we went straight to following up leads. That was a mistake. But, we figured out what we needed to know and managed to solve the case (took us a while though). I really liked FIGURING THIS OUT. This... was fun. I can't wait to play more. Unsurprisingly, this wasn't a game for Ben. But, we knew that going in.

Sunday Late Morning - Early Afternoon - Ben has had enough. He has some family to meet at 12pm, and bids his goodbyes. He isn't coming home with us anyway, but, Daniel, myself and Therese are still keen to keep playing. The Games Library closes at 4pm on the Sunday, and there's still plenty of time for one last game. So, I crack open another purchased game. Spirit Island. It was one of the only copies I could find at the con, and I got it early. It was expensive too, $106. But, after looking online, most Aussie retailers had this at $115 as a starting price. I decided that this game is going to be hard to get, and, it's only going to go up in price. This was a very risky blind buy - I'd heard great things about it, but, hadn't actually seen any reviews for it. It was a gamble - I wanted to know if it paid off.

This is one turn before we won - they've only got two cities left. Also, it was fun being the super terrifying monster in this game.
Winner: We won!
Thoughts: This game has a lot of moving parts! In a good way. My initial impressions of this are really positive - our first few rounds we had no idea what we were doing and we were all getting frustrated very quickly. As the game went on though, we all really started getting into it and really started to enjoy it. I love the subversion of the board game trope with this game, and, it pulls it off really well. We only played a very basic starting game, but, I can't wait to play more of this. My only fear with this is - it probably suffers heavily from the Alpha Gamer problem. Usually Ben is the alpha gamer in our group when that problem does occur, and, I found myself doing it in this game to help Therese. The games philosophy of open table talk doesn't help it much in this respect, and, while helping each other is certainly necessary to win, I suspect as we each learn the game this problem will only get worse, not better. By the end of the game, as Therese was more confident with her cards, she was doing more of her own moves and I wasn't concerned with what she was doing. But, I can see a situation where myself or other players know all the cards really well and might be able to dictate/solve the game on their own. Which... sucks. But, until that starts to happen, I intend to get some good use out of this game as solid co-op.

Me: 7.5/10
Therese: 7.5/10

Sunday - Early Evening - As we're packing up Spirit Island, the Games Library staff are packing up tables. We're one of the few tables left, and, as soon as I stand up to put the lid on the box, a volunteer has taken my chair. So, sticking around to play another game appears to be out of the question, and, fair enough. We swing by Maccas, then make the long drive home. We get in, and, aren't quite ready to call it quits just yet. I have a bunch of other games I want to play, and, we've still got all night - Therese isn't heading off until later and Daniel is crashing the night.

I bring out one of my purchased games - Arkham Horror the Card Game. I'm excited to play it. It's not until Daniel gets a few pages into the rules that we realize it's a two-player game... not a 1-4 player multiplayer game like I thought it was. Later, I find out, that it definitely IS a 1-4 player game, but I need to purchase a 2nd copy of the game... I DID manage to pick up one of the big expansions for this, so, I suspect I will be able to make do with some proxy cards, but, at the time I decide to pack up Arkham Horror the Card Game in disgust. I suggest Concordia as our next game, another game I purchased that I'm keen to try, but, Daniel and Therese are getting tired already and the idea of a possibly heavy Euro is not appealing. So, I pull out magic maze again and we just play that three more times.

Best Game No One Purcahsed:

It's weird giving this award to a game we had already played, but, this was definitely the best game we played that no one owns - mostly because it's impossible to find a Wood version of. But, the fact that this was the only game from last year that we went back to play again this year I think is a testament to how much we SHOULD own this game.

The Game We Didn't Get To Play:

This game was often available, but, I just couldn't get my group to work up the guts to find another 4 people to play it with us. And, fair enough - it was loud, and, I think that would of detracted some of the fun from this... so, this is the game that I wanted to play that we didn't get a chance to try. Maybe I'll get a chance at a later date.

Biggest Disappointment of the Con:

I'm not sure everyone else would agree with me, and, to be fair, I didn't exactly get their thoughts regarding this, but, I don't think its fair to put "That's a Question" here, because no one was actually expecting anything from that game when we played it.

This game, I think people were expecting a bit more from, and, it certainly did not deliver. At least, not for me. Unfortunately, this entry belongs to a game that WAS purchased.

Best Game of the Con:

Undoubtedly, the consensus was this was the best game of the con. Personally, I'd of chosen something else, but, this was still a very good game and given how universally we all liked it, I think this was a clear winner. Slightly jealous I don't own it, but, glad I saved a BIT of money at least.
