Welcome to
Kids on Board Games Geeklist
- February 2018

Hello all and welcome to the monthly "Kids on Board" games Geeklist.

Children need time to play alone and with other children without adult intervention, but playtime with adults is also important. As we all know board games are great for that. Not only do they teach children patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity amongst other things they can just be plain FUN for everyone.

This is a geeklist for anyone that plays any board games with children. Remember, they don't have to be your own children! (Just get permission first if they aren't!!) Hopefully it will inspire, inform, advise and open our eyes to the world of gaming with kids.

Feel free to post geeklist items, comment on other peoples items and generally mingle in the comments below. Also, consider spreading the word to anyone you feel may be interested.

Now, all you need to do is:

1. Play a board game with kid(s) within this month - it'd be extremely helpful if you can give the ages of the kids
2. Post a geeklist entry after you've played
3. Let us know how it plays
4. Provide feedback for others:
- hopefully one comment/word per child, maybe they can devise their own rating system?
- give your own overview, the adults perspective on how it was for you and how it seemed for them
5. Be nice, it's okay to disagree but it's not okay to be rude - we're all different but also the same
6. That's it!

Feel free to post photos but also feel free to avoid using full face pictures and avoid full names. You know, the usual internet safety rules.

Kids on Board Games Geeklist - SUBSCRIPTION THREAD

This Month

Welcome to the Kids on Board games geeklist.

This month Ibbo has (rather recklessly IMO) handed over the reigns of the Kids On Board Geeklist to myself.

Being located in the North of England, February to me involves long and dark evenings. Some may suggest perfect conditions for boardgaming.
What it also provides is an opportunity to look to the skies and gaze at the wonders of the universe of which we are a part of. In this part of the world the astronomical calendar for this month has some treats in store for us, a Super Blue Blood Moon as well as a new moon solar eclipse. Also local to us we have the Soyuz capsule of UK Astronaut Tim Peake visiting the York Railway Museum.

In some great timing this coincides with my son's school class choosing to make Space their topic for the term.

With all these cosmic things happening this month is would seem foolish of me not to suggest Space as the theme for this month.

Let me know what space themed (and other) games you get up to.

My five year old daughter is super into this game right now. We've played it many times in the past month.

She has not been as interested in Candy Land, Labyrinth Jr, or D&D this month. We tend to play what she wants to play. So smacking mustaches it is!

To launch off the theme, E.(7) and I had a 2p head to head of TEG.

Scores were 30-20 to E., and we both met our secret mission. It was looking close until energy was exhausted on re-rolls to snag a 7 point planet.

Dice chucking fun in one of my first ever kickstarters. The neoprene mat adds to the dice chucking satisfaction too.

We played this as 2 teams (Boys(7)& Girls(9)).

We all enjoy this but is maybe a few rounds to long for E. (7).

The theme is engaging and the rush to the end is tense.

So it's not all space this month after all.

Miss H. has gone to a friends for a sleepover. Which left three of us with an evening to fill.

TtR UK has additional rules where you need to buy additional technologies to build routes longer than two cards or two expand your routes of of England and in to Scotland,Wales or Ireland. It's an interesting twist, although I do find myself accidently cheating by expanding in to a country before having purchased the rights to do so.

Mr E.teamed up with Mrs Celt, but in the end it was a five point win to me

Not space themed, since we play the John Deere version out our house. Tonight Melanie won, and I came way behind. Ben was second, though he had piles of money, and looked like a little magnate. If it weren't for the math skills and the obvious fun he has with the farm theme...I'd really not want to play this. But he does, so I will.

No looping wookies in the house so we had a 3 player Looping Louie.

Chosen by Mr E. we had about 10 rounds of this and we were all smiling and laughing at the end.

My daughter (6) and I just learned to play this game last month. She doesn't read any English, but she's got a good head for rules. Yesterday she discovered the Rescue Dog, so now she only wants to play that role - letting me worry about the fires (and opening doors for her). But the necessary teamwork when you use specialized roles is something that makes this a fun game to me.

A few more plays before we're going to try the expert game. My daughter was a bit worried about more explosions. When a game's over she spends some time sending in builders to repair all the walls and then she'll play with the people tokens - putting some to bed, others around the table etc.

One casualty today

We've had some cold days and an extra three kids playing inside with my three kids.

Yesterday, after so many hours together was leading to increased bickering, I suggested this game to them and talked them into playing. Two of the neighbor kids argue they don't like most games but they have enjoyed a couple of our other games from time to time; I was thinking this one might appeal to them more than our more strategic games.

There were 5 kids playing, grade levels included 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. They ended up with the 3 players of the middle grade-aged kids on one team and the youngest and oldest on the other team.

It was a bumpy start because it was challenging for everyone as they took their first try at giving clues, but most everyone eventually warmed up to it.

I eventually volunteered to join the team with just 2 players when they were getting very frustrated and were falling farther behind -- to avoid giving them too much of an advantage, I was a guessing-only member. The other team won by one 'point' and it stayed fairly balance from that point.

We have a version newer than the BGG photo but some of the words were a little bit dated where my kids didn't really know what many of the items were - even a CD player left a couple of them confused (really?).

I am not sure if they'll ever want to play again, but I think it was still fun to get them to brainstorm different ways to explain something. And yay for finally playing a game that has been on the shelf for a few years.

Hopefully, you guys aren't tiring of me entering in Uncharted Worlds. Mr. E (11) is clearly in love with this system, moreso than any other RPG he has encountered. I've been running a loosely designed scenario that is inspired by The Circle Trilogy from DS9: the Drauzei Empire has been passing armaments secretly to militia groups on border colony planets, believing they will attempt to break away from the Orion Union. Mr.E is about to confront Anatoly Prestov, who has been manufacturing high explosives on Vreslik.

After posting for the third time, I think I should say something more definitive about why this is attracting Mr. E and whether it is a good game for kids. These are light rules. The actions that can be taken, or Moves, are defined somewhat abstractly, so it might take a moment to fit what one wants to do with the Move that is most appropriate. For instance, Mr. E wanted to get someone to do or tell him something. It wasn't always clear whether he was trying to be authoritative or intimidating. The first move would be a command, the second an overcome adversity. They would involve different stats, but the consequences for failure are different. Where the game really works is in terms of successes. If the player rolls well, s/he gets to tell the story of their success. The benefit is that the action keeps moving. Rather than spending round after round fighting, the player gets to say how they took out all the bad guys. Failures pass the power to move the story to the GM, who can ramp up the threat level.

There is some hesitation. We have both become used to being told what outcomes unfolded. When Mr. E succeeded, he would wait for me to say what happened. Sometimes I would start by giving a description, but then stop myself, saying,"No, you narrate your success." We both are becoming accustomed to how the game is supposed to work, and the games--or stories--are starting to unfold more smoothly.

Mechanically, this isn't too difficult for kids. It's kind of a tug of war, doing what you can to move the story in the direction you want. The intention is not to win,but to have an adventure. There are other games that use the Apocalypse World/Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) system in any number of genres. I think playing these RPGs require some knowledge of the literature or films of the genre. One could do a dungeon crawl with Dungeon World, perhaps the most popular game in the system, but the kids would need to have some knowledge of fantasy tropes in order to be good storytellers. There is no world building that the players don't essentially do themselves on the fly. Ultimately, the system empowers the player to make the story, and on that level, it's great for kids. They can be the narrators of their success.

We had a spare half hour and so I slipped old Ninja Camp out. We all enjoy this one and with the cute images and cute clans with their varied special abilities it's not got stale yet.

It's not space per se but it does have spaces that you can Leap over...

Plays quickly, requires some forward thinking with some neat combos happening.

This time mum got hemmed in too early and in the end me and D (11) drew with an impressive 37 points each.

D(11) said she really likes it and enjoys having the three ninjeeples to control and the card options you can collect.
B(9) said he thinks it's just like Hey That's My Fish but agreed it was probably a bit of a step up with more variety.
My wife said she normally really enjoys it but... cry

My 3-year-old daughter and I play a lot of games together, though it's sometimes a challenge getting her to finish a game before she wants to start a new one. This one we managed to finish.

Just a simple game that leaves everything up to chance. It can drag on slightly because your goal is to get worms out of your apple, but certain spins require you to add more worms or switch apples, but it's still quick enough that I don't mind playing. Good for helping to familiarize young kids with basic game concepts (spinning, taking turns, winning/losing, color matching).

She says, "Worm game is my favorite."

We're away from home as a family this weekend as Miss H. Has a gymnastics competition at the far end of the country.

I did pack a selection of games and we grabbed a table in the hotel reception/bar area.

Four rounds of codenames pictures. Pictures are still good as Mr E.s reading vocabulary isn't huge yet. Managed to get some good 2 card class and not just singles.

We played this for the first time last month and my kids (9 and 7) fell in love with it.

I got a great deal from a local seller and they were so excited when I pulled it out this evening. Amusingly, my 9yo instantly noticed the difference in weight in the tokens for our new game versus the other version we played.

We played one game before bedtime, just the 3 of us, and most of the comments were appreciation and excitement that we own it now.

I won even with using my current self-imposed limitations (forcing myself to use only bonuses to purchase any cards with prestige points), and maybe I need another strategy -- or hopefully, I won't need one at all soon and they'll develop more strategic actions.

Another roll and write with my 7 year old daughter. I really like this one. She was a bit confused with the rules, but they are coming together after a couple of plays. There is a bit of attacking and she gets mad when I attack her, but is completely fine with attacking me. The rules have a friendly variant that we might try.

Played this yesterday with my 9yo. Great game as always. She did really well, and actually triggered game-end by completing her 9th objective, but on my final turn, I also completed a 9th objective and beat her on final score by only 3 points - 63 to 60.

Unrelated-to-game comment: I think that's the best close-up shot I've ever taken with my phone's camera!

Super game, and for the depth of play you can get from it, amazing stuff for the game length (~30 minutes with 2 players).

Played this with my nieces (pre-teen and early teens) this weekend, and my daughter even participated a little until she lost interest.

This was my first time playing after receiving the game as a gift from my thrifty secret Santa. We had a lot of fun with it- it's just not a serious gamer's game, but more of a silly family game. We enjoyed reading the bios for the different racers and getting into the theme, and racing to grab the pawns after the dice were rolled. There's more here than just a roll and move, but definitely a lot of luck too. We played twice because my nieces liked it so much. It's great to have games like this on hand; I've learned that with some of my family members it's best to just stick with the fun, lighter games rather than overwhelm them with what I generally play. In the end, we have more fun that way.

I honestly enjoyed this myself and will certainly play again with the right group.

This is the spaced themed game we get out most as it is a quick simple game which can be played nice or mean depending on your preferences devil

Have been playing since my daughter just turned 5.

Do love mission red planet and galaxy truckers too but they don't come out so often and are more suitable for older kids :-)

I took my daughters (8 and 12) to my gaming club and some of the other members had brought Robo Rally for us all to play. The girls didn't stop laughing all evening so it was a great success.

We currently have this on loan from the ludothèque. So far, just myself and my older daughter have played it. She thought it was great fun but I feel like we missed something somewhere as we didn't get into buying any powerups. Hopefully we will play it a couple more times before it has to be returned and we can persuade my younger daughter to play too. She is probably on the spectrum and has to be in just the right frame of mind to try something new.

This was my older daughter's Christmas present. We have all played a couple of games this month. Lost both again but had a good time doing it. Familiarity means that both girls are happy to play and because it's cooperative, they don't fight with each other too much

I managed to find this for half price recently on Amazon Warehouse but when it turned up it was the Czech version!

My youngest daughter loves sushi and she loves this game. Her favourite is collecting the desserts. Things have a tendency to get a bit rushed as the hands of cards get passed around and the card counts get messed up by the time we are done to the last 3 cards or so despite my best efforts to slow them down.

This is where I should mention that my older daughter probably has ADHD!

Me - I have ADHD and I am on the spectrum, so it's interesting at times.
