Girnan's Game Shelf

I mostly play on TTS, but I do have a small collection of games in physical form that I am looking to slowly and thoughtfully build over time. For purposes of this list, I'm not counting a couple games that hubby came into the marriage with, he shelves separately, and I have zero interest in -- stuff like Twilight Imperium and Dragonriders of Pern. I'm also not counting our small handful of "Wal-Mart games" -- garden-variety versions of Monopoly, Risk, Trivial Pursuit, etc.
I've listed them roughly in the order I would grab them if the house were on fire.

Ohhh, so many warm and fuzzy childhood memories with this one. I grew up in Canada and back in 1986, I begged my parents to buy this for me at a fundraising rummage sale that my school was having.
I love it all -- the little plastic beavers, the Canadian company logos, the bilingual board... *squee*

I'm mostly a solo player, but when I play with other people, this is the one on my shelf I gravitate to first. It's good with 3 (my typical family size), but it's even better with more. I love the art and I really like the card-drafting mechanism. Luck/randomness is a big part of the enjoyment I get from board games, and this game has it in abundance.

A couple years ago, hubby brought this home from a trip to visit board-gaming friends, and I heartily approve of his choice. I like the euro-historical theme, and it wasn't too hard to teach it to my non-gaming parents when they came to visit.

Light, fun and social. My kids and I are highly amused by this one, even if we are still a little hazy on the rules. I mean, who doesn't like to fist-bump while yelling "MEOW"?

This was a bit of an impulse buy, but turns out to be a good choice. I've played a couple 3-player games so far, and we all liked it. It's sometimes deceptive because you will think you have an idea of how you are doing (whether winning or losing), and when the VPs are tallied up, you're in the opposite boat.

OMG, it's Monopoly. But with HORSES! Horses, ya'll. I can't wait to break this one out when hubby has some spare time.

I picked this up for next to nothing at a thrift store a couple years ago because it just looked so different. I haven't played it yet, but I've come to understand that it's largely an educational game that is marketed to teachers/homeschoolers/summer camps. The tokens are made with hand-laminated recycled paper and some of the lamination is splitting badly, so I'm planning to delve into the game after I fix that.

Another warm fuzzy from my childhood that I picked up at a thrift store.

Another thrift store find. I remember this a little bit from my childhood, and I enjoy the theme (my mother is an artist who exposed me to a lot of the classic works). The little plastic easel is broken, and after I fix that, I plan to try this one out.

I liked this a ton when we first got it, as it was my first exposure to modern board games. Now, a few years later, it's just "okay." If someone else wants to play it, that's fine, but I wouldn't deliberately reach for it myself.

Thrift find. I like the theme, and it's supposedly solo-able, according to the box. Bonus happiness points for being made in Canada.

Yet another thrift store find. I'm concerned about the tiny size of the little wooden cubes, but the theme is more interesting to me than some of the others I've found at thrift stores so far.

This was a thrift store find that I just couldn't pass up. It's complete, but I haven't played it yet. I'm not sure the fantasy theme is quite my thing, but I figure it's worth trying out a time or two with the family.

This is missing about half its cards (thrift store find) and I'm not sure that's enough to get a decent two-player game out of it. I like the theme better than Four Taverns, but I'm not sure it will be around very long if it's not playable.

Impulse buy from sale table at FLGS = box of regret. It's basically 3D tic-tac-toe, and left both me and my 11-year-old frustrated with the unclear and overpowered god cards. Not only would I not grab this if the house was burning, but I would deliberately chuck this into the flames like a frisbee. Hoping to trade or sell it in the near future.
