Trying out the new solo card system for ABB. Instead of flowchart-driven bots, the ABB bots will have decks of cards. You still have the random spaces tables seen in a few other COIN solo systems, and there are instructions on how to deal with events.

Right now there are only cards for Senate and Moderates factions, no card deck for the Reds just yet.

I just started a game on Vassal. The scenario is 1644: Turenne Arrives. I've not played this one before so looking forward to getting stuck in. It's a top game.

Might accompany it with a couple of solo battle from Under The Lily Banners.

Last month I tried to wrap my head around the AI's flowchart but just couldn't make heads or tails of it. This is the first COIN game which I've purchased, and it was mostly for solitaire play. Eventually deciding I needed a break, I packed the game up and shelved it for a few days. Once I'd gathered enough stamina, I pulled it from the shelf and set it up again. This time, things seemed to flow a little better. A little.

I hit a brick wall again and it's been sitting on my table ever since. Every once in a while I sit down to it but I'm finding it exceedingly difficult to make the flowchart ... flow.

However, I haven't given up. This will be THE MONTH that I finally crack the code and get a full game done.

Are most COIN AI's this complex?

Not played this one for many years and thought I'd give it a solo outing.

I'm playing with the option that reducing German production between the fall of France and the attack on Russia.

This is because last time I had interest in this game and played it, there was a feeling that Germany arrived at the 1941 attack on Russia, historically far too strong.

On my first solo play as the Dux my progress has been slow due to learning the rules, how the bots work, and the cold weather in my game area. (Just have small heater) Very nice game the only complaint is trying to balance the plunder cubes of the raider pieces.

Second game. Trying the Allied side against the French.

all stickered up and Tsenduk will be over to play a game with me tonight.should be fun.

The French attacked on the first impulse killing 3 British units.Their left flank was weakened but they had 3 out of the 10 units required for a sudden death victory.

The British counterattacked into the weakened French left destroying 3 units but also managing to replace the spent unit in Hougement with a fresh one.The French advanced nervously allowing the British cavalry unit a wide outflanking move on the British right.

The French advance continued with a massive 5 British units killed in one impulse.

The only think the British can do was to hammer away on the French extreme right to turn the flanks. They did this with both armies now needing two kills for a sudden victory.

The French attacked all along the line eliminating a sole British leader in a zone but suddenly lost two of their own just before the entrenched British line.A British victory by default..

The game had not gone by turn one with the French advancing relentlessly.

Overall a great game but I am still getting used to the diceless combat system.

With the 75th anniversary of Von Manstein's Backhand Blow just around the corner I decided to dust off this old friend (last played in 2010 gulp ) This has always been one of my favorite operations of World War II and I really enjoy the T3 System / Schwerpunkt Series (I own them all after finally tracking down Velikiye Luki last year). Part my of my plan is to also play Duel on the Steppe: The Winter Campaign in the Ukraine, Jan-Mar 1943 too but we'll see how that goes

This game is quite solitaire friendly with variable activity points available each turn as well as tactical chits you drawn randomly from a cup for each combat.

The first game turn literally starts today and the tank corps are rushing forward for Mother Russia toward Kharkov at this time!!!

Dusted off my Adowa 1896 scenario. It is one of my favorites. The map is huge and there are almost 250 miniatures on the board.

The players are rewarded for using historical tactics like the Ethiopian "crescent moon" formation shown in this photograph. The order of battle for the Italian army is quite good; different factions of the feudal Ethiopian army are represented with a color coded system.

I built my own quick-firing artillery miniatures. Proud of that!

The session is loaded with goodies: cavalry, heliograph messages, pack animals, leaders including the Ethiopian Ras miniature, Ascari, mountain artillery, etc.

Here is the BGG article: Adowa 1896: adapting the Commands & Colors system to the Age of Imperialism leads to another outstanding play experience

With the benefit of some time off I took the plunge and got this game to the table. I had collected heaps of scenarios over.the years and played a couple of games using Epaminondas and the Theban super Hoplite unit to get a feel for the system.

I am starting with simple GBoH but once I get a feel for the system will gradually introduce more rules.

Here' the end game at Leuctra. The Spartan Hoplites routed and Cleombrotus killed....fairly historical outcome.

First time playing Holdfast: EastFront. Started with the main (June 1941 through sometime in 1943) scenario. Didn't get to finish the game, had some stuff come up. But it was fun getting to push some count... I mean blocks around. Rules are super easy. Didn't stop me from messing up a few minor things my first couple turns. What else is new though? Reading the rulebook gives me a good start, but I always need to play a couple times before I grok the rules. This goes for pretty much any game. Overall component quality is excellent. Best box I've seen from Worthington, no slipcover here. Definitely love the mounted board. I'll be spending some more time with this one in the future.

Wait, this is not a war game you say?

Well, technically you would be correct. Allow me to explain.

I had been watching this game for a while. During Christmas I put it on my wish list of things to buy dear old dad (thats me). Lo and behold and my firefighter son bought this for me.

I broke it out about two weeks ago and it has been war ever since.

Turns out my wife LOVES this game and will play almost any time. Thus we have embarked on a one game journey between us. We have even started to box top this game to keep track of our scores and wins.

Took me about 5 games to finally win one, but that was only one battle in this war!

Here we are playing a different game at the local brewery.

Don't let her fool you.....

Ok, this may not be a strict wargame either, but there are battles and it came from SPI...

We have been reading through the SSR stories at bedtime with my son and I got out this old game to try with him...so far I'm just refreshing myself with the mechanics, but plan on playing over the weekend.

One of those folio games that are quick playing but does not simulate the situation sufficiently.

Matters little. It’s modifiers and die rolls to determine the battle.

The US M60s have to get up close and personal to stand any chance against the T-72s in the first scenario, which is armour only. Playing this with the Basic Rules to get the hang of the turn sequence and how spotting etc works. I am perusing the advanced rules as I play. There's a lot to remember in the Advanced Rules, but I'm hoping that the tables will provide look-up reminders for modifiers etc so that not everything has to be interalised. As the designer states, it looks like you can pick and choose from the advanced rules to find your own sweet spot.

The picture below is at the start of turn 4, some M60s have been brewed up as can be seen from the Litko smoke markers. The Soviets had some very good rolls to pick them off at Medium range. All now depends on who wins the initiative for this turn, at least on the part of the map which includes the charmingly named Echo-2 village.
