A couple of detective themed games are going to be published this year - and I wonder which is the best, or rather which one does what well.

As I struggle to understand a game from the rules alone, I shout out for help, thoughts and opinions.

If you know games that I've missed, feel free to add them. More importantly share your thoughts with us regarding all the games on this list.

In case you wonder: I'm looking for "detective themed games". This is not necessarily about deduction as the game's core. I'm talking games that put you in the role of some form of investigators (and possibly criminals, too).

PS: 2015 saw a lot of games like these, too, and I created a similar list at the time - that I changed to a personal "detective" game watchlist, in case you are interested: My list of deduction/mystery games

PPS: What I partly am looking for is a game that I can (buy, of course, and) re-theme with my current favourite mystery show - Longmire from A&E/Netflix.

I guess not much is known about this game yet. But obviously the exciting part is that it uses an app. The game comes from star-designer Ignacy Trzewiczek and stands out with a cool contemporary theme among all the "film noir" type games on this list.

Another digitally enhanced mystery game. Was #6 on Rahdo's list of anticipated 2018 releases. (While Detective: A Modern Crime Boardgame was #7.)

There was a KS campaign last December to publish an English (international?) version for this Spanish game. The campaign was cancelled midways - because the campaign wasn't really successful. (Like, if it had funded, then just barely.)

I was a bit surprised because the game seemed really cool.
When you've got a Clue-like deduction game, there's the risk that the solution is very random (a person, a weapon, a place) and thus not exciting. Or you create a story - which is either a one-time affair or at best doesn't offer much replayability.

In this game they had a concept where you create a new deck for each game that guaranteed would offer a clear and solvable solution/story.

I guess they start a new campaign at some point of time.

This one is currently on Kickstarter.

It's a dice'n'cards solo-coop game that promises strong storytelling. It's a dice-management game that could offer a similar experience and puzzle like The Lost Expedition (of course that one has no dice). It is not a deduction game and does not depend on one-play cases. Pulp Detective has also a much lower price than most other games on this list.

Todd Sanders seems to be an interesting, off-mainstream designer whose games I wanted to check out anyway.

As I said the KS is live right now (until Feb 28). The base game is $19 + shipping.

For my re-theming plans this one seems perfect as it only has a couple of cards that I'd need to do the layout for (while I could use the tokens and dice).

This one is said to offer especially strong storytelling. It's selling point seems to be that in the competitive mode one player is a Game Master type - so the story doesn't depend on a story book but evolves through play and depends on the players. A plus the the Vincent Dutrait art!

Rahdo did a run-through. In his Final Thoughts he compared it to Deadline (which he liked) and said that D:CoA offers that extra "human touch".

The KS page allows "late pledges". The base game costs $64 + shipping.

For my re-theming plans, this game has just too many components. (Also it's too expensive to buy just for re-theming. And secondly why would you ever re-design a game with art from Vincent???)

This is a 2017 release but seems like it belongs in this overview. To me it seems as if it is much less shiny/hyped/fancy than most other games on the list. It did receive good reviews from the Dice Tower's Zee Garcia and Rahdo.

Here's Rahdo who - in his Final Thoughts describes it as Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective meets The Grizzled.

The game is already out, published by WizKids with an MSRP of $44.99.

Would be tough to re-theme with its case book and many cards for the cases.

Now this game is definitely not a recent, let alone upcoming publication. But on the first view it seems to strike similar chords as Pulp Detective and Deadline so I thought, I add it for reference.

On a second view, this game is quite different from the others - as it is rather a pure storytelling game. The comments the geeks made about it range from "Not much gameplay, more of a choose your own adventure, silly storytelling event" to "The game is amazing. I couldn't see exactly how the story cards and clue cards would be able to create such a tightly woven narrative".

As it wasn't met with a lot of enthusiasm this game can be chased down for little money.

Regarding my re-theming plans I'm tempted but the game has nearly 190 cards - so that would be a lot of work.
