We always put a die next to the cards on the board, and if, after six turns, nobody has taken a card from the face up pile, we wipe them and get four new ones. This keeps the face up mechanisim working throughout the game and stops the dig-fest that often occurs (especially in a 3 player game). It gives incentive for people to take one of those face up cards. Obviously, the die resets if a face-up is taken.

We always force re-rolls on a seven in the first round. It is too big of an advantage on the first turn to steal a card from someone who has not played yet. This really inbalances the game if brick is rare and the 4th player has 2 in their hand to start the game, expecting to build an early road, only to have them both stolen from him before his turn.

We've always played with hidden stocks, but if you get to 13, you have to state it out loud. Helps people who just can't keep up with what people have from continuing to chase a stock they can't possibly get majority in. Oh, and I'll never play with open stocks...makes this game too easy.

We have been playing recently where we shuffle all the red border cards and all the non-red cards, then shuffle in 3 of the red cards, then take the last 3 cards and shuffle the last red one into them. This prevents this outstanding game from ending in a stupid manner (like the first time I played where the cards drawn were: 1/2, -5, 2x, 3, robber, 2x, 2x and nobody won since the robber got to steal the 3....)

Due purely to dice rolls, I found myself in jail on my second turn. I was still moving through the jail cells many turns later when someone else won, so I never really even got to play! So we made up some house rules to make going to jail a little less frequent, and a little easier to get out. Otherwise, this is a GREAT game!

Auction two cards per turn instead of one. This makes the game faster and distributes the animals even more.

You must always accept the cards of your neighbour, regardless if you believe him or not. Just bluff your way out of it.
This makes this game a real one-against-all game.

A few house rules here:
1) The car can only be used starting from the rounds surrounding the car. In our board, we marked these rounds with an 'S'.
2) Guards have unlimited passes and keys so they have no problem passing these points. Prisoners need to have a passport for each prisoner. A door will remain unlocked for one turn. A wire will remain cut for one turn (this is also important for the guard) and a rope will remain in its place for one turn (also important for the guard).
