Welcome to the official HeavyCon 2018 scheduling list! HeavyCon is the convention put on by us, the hosts of the Heavy Cardboard Podcast & YouTube channel for fellow fans of the heavier end of the hobby. The convention takes place in Denver, Colorado, over the Memorial Day weekend. The dates this year are May 24-27, 2018. From 8am Thursday up thru midnight Sunday night, it's all-you-can-eat heavier games in the hobby (18xx, war games, heavy Euros, etc). While the convention is by invitation only, you can always reach out to us and be put on the waitlist for subsequent years (Click here to get on the waitlist for 2019!).

This list is here for any attendees that wish to post & organize games prior to arriving at HeavyCon. By starting this list a few months in advance, players can start reviewing rules, assign players to specific countries/characters/etc.

Got an 18XX, a wargame, or a Phil Eklund game that you've been dying to have hit the table? How about that game of Die Macher or Dutch Revolt you've always wanted to try? This list is for you!

Please also use this list to coordinate informal teaching/learning games for newbies as well.

Organization of the Geeklist

The games are listed in ALPHABETICAL order so that you can scroll down the list and see if a game you want to play is being organized or not. If it is, you can post a comment showing your interest. If it's not, you can Add an Item and put your game on the list.

It is also usually a good idea to Subscribe to the specific games you are interested in playing, rather than the entire list. This way, you will be notified when there is a post to the specific games you want, rather than all games and comments.

For particularly organization-heavy games in which players, roles, and other stuff must be handled prior to the con, it might be good to have several entries of a game. You can look at previous years' lists here:

HeavyCon 2015 Scheduled Games

HeavyCon 2016 planning/organizing!
HeavyCon 2017 Scheduling Geeklist

How to Post

Some useful information to include in game listings:

Game Title (added via the Geeklist Item)
# of Players
Day/Time to Meet (This will likely be TBD until we get closer to the Con)
Expected Playing Time (Duration)
Requested Experience Level of Players (i.e. Beginners welcome, Expert, etc.)

Mules

If you are willing to bring a copy of a needed game, please do! Many of the games on this list may be scarce, but we have a lot of locals that have good sized libraries that will be willing to bring games. Obviously, more obscure titles may require a Mule. If you are a local to Denver, supplies such as plexiglass, poker chips, etc. are greatly appreciated.

Requesting a Game

If you aren't planning to host a specific game, but would like to still help get it organized, please REPLY in the comments section at the bottom of the geeklist your desire for playing a certain game. You should have pretty good success getting someone willing to set up a game if there is enough interest for that particular title.

(thanks to my buddy Patrick for the guideline to follow)

I am interested in playing the Medium Regional scenario. I have played the full game three times and have no interest in playing it again. I have not played any of the shorter scenarios which the designer seems to prefer.

Quote:
Medium Regional (Medium Partial Map scenario (excludes the north and the southwest))
This is perhaps the gem in the bundle. It is balanced, it is quick and it does suit fewer players. Having got rid of most of the rubbish from the periphery of the map, dividends tend to be a bit higher so the train rush is fierce.

I'd need to borrow someone's copy as well.

Learning Game

# of Players: 4
Day/Time to Meet: Thursday 1PM
Expected Playing Time: 4 hours
Requested Experience Level of Players: Rookies!

Here's the plan. We're at this table to teach and enjoy good company as they explore and learn the system. We'll "think out loud" and discuss options as desired by the new players as we play. Chad and I are not there to win, we're there to help you discover if there is a system waiting for you to love.

Tony Fryer
Chad Cook
German Mike
Michael C. (ulukai)

It plays 5 but I'm capping this session at 4 - sounds like we need another rookie session too!

It was a thing that emerged from the mists in past Heavycons.

Looming larger than Mother Russia herself.

Will we again witness a game of giant 1861?

Can I possibly join you for a game on Sunday?

That is up to you, putative owner and muler of 1861XL.

A teaching game of 1889 - this is basically 1830 in about half the time.

# of Players: 3-4
Day/Time to Meet: Thursday 1PM (1:30PM if 1860 runs long)
Expected Playing Time: 4 hours
Requested Experience Level of Players: New players WELCOME! (or only have made a couple plays). Experienced players discouraged - as this is a teaching game. Game will be taught and tips/advice will be given.

My only request is to watch a basic video on youtube before you attend if you have never played 18XX game before. It's about 40 mins and it's very informative.

How about a 90s Euro night?

Take a break from the cult of the new to get together and play classic games from the 1990s.

Time: Friday 9pm - late

No signup required. Just express interest and maybe commit to bringing/teaching/playing a game. The hope is to get enough people for several tables.

I'm hoping to play games like

El Grande
Tigris & Euphrates
MarraCash
Vino
Bohnanza

I plan on playing a few games over the weekend. Here's a place for us to talk about playing AoS. What maps people want to play, etc.

Worker placement at it’s core. It made former Punching Cardboard co-host Eric’s Top 10 Spiel Anticipation List (#3). Not your traditional Euro, player interaction similar to Forged in Steel. Brides & Bribes received a positive review (8/10, primary reviewer) in Spielbox #1 2018. If interested, please include preferred day/time Wednesday through Friday.

4-5 players
Day/Time: Wednesday evening
Duration: 2-3 hours with teach
Experience: all levels welcome

1. Dean Brandt
2. Larry Rice
3. Rand Lemley
4. Carmen Petruzzelli
5. JJ Underwood
