I've always loved standard playing cards and playing traditional card games. These are my favorite games to play with just your standard deck of 52 playing cards.

Most of these I would play as a quick filler game in between some bigger games, but others I would spend an evening playing several rounds of the game.

#10 - Blackjack

This was always referred to as 21 by my friends but it was blackjack. It was the second game we played most often if bored in study hall in high school (the number one choice was always Crazy Eights) and it was definitely my favourite choice. It's a pretty simple game of chance but I enjoy it, especially if I've got some time to kill.

#9 - Spoons

I've only ever played this once, but I enjoyed it a lot. I was at a summer camp and there were probably about 20 of us playing with different styled decks put together. If I recall correctly, I got pretty far but did not win the game. Either way, it was a very fun experience and it's a game I hope to teach my family sometime as a fun little filler game.

#8 - Spider Solitaire

A much more challenging variation on standard solitaire where 2 decks of cards are shuffled together and placed in 10 piles and then must be sorted in descending order by number but can only be removed once the sequence is complete and all cards in the sequence are the same suit. It provides more depth than standard solitaire and that is why this one is on my list and not the former.

#7 - Clock Solitaire

This, like the previous installment, is a great take on the standard solitaire formula where cards are arranged in a clock formation, with a 13th pile in the middle. The object is to arrange these piles into face up formation as their number would be represented on a clock. The kings go in the middle and as such, you lose the game if you reveal all 4 kings before the other piles are revealed. It's a game of chance but provides great entertainment on a rainy day. My paternal grandmother taught me the game and I played it often as a child.

#6 - The Lonely Dead

This is the last of the solitaire game entries on this list, but it is the best of them in my opinion. With dice-rolling combat and some interesting mechanics, this is the entry most like a board game. The object is to defeat the "zombies" (the face cards) before they destroy you. I found this while looking at a geeklist of different solitaire games using standard cards and decided to give this a try and fell in love with it. I especially like playing with my zombie themed card deck.

#5 - Cheat

This game's more unsavory name was often the one that it went by when I was in school because kids of course love using the bad words they aren't supposed to. Either way, it became a favourite of mine, especially since I was pretty good at paying attention to what was a plausible card amount. This one is also good as a filler game and can provide some good entertainment, especially when someone has to pick up all the other cards.

#4 - Speed

I was surprised that I couldn't seem to find an entry for this, since there's even a Wikipedia article on it, but no matter. Speed was a game I learned while I was in school, and while I am not the best at it, I still enjoy it quite a bit. The object of Speed is to rid yourself of all your cards before your opponent does by playing cards on one of the two face up middle stacks that is either one number higher, lower, or the same as the card you are playing. Both players play simultaneously and this is where the name of the game comes in. It's a fast frenzy of card playing and pile slapping.

#3 - Spite & Malice

This was one of two games I learned while I visited my husband's family in BC (The other, being Mexican Train, is not featured on this list). We spent a few evenings with my husband's aunt and uncle playing rounds of this game. It's something that if asked to play, I would almost always say yes. The Wikipedia article does a much better job at explaining the game than I would.

#2 - Poker

I don't know why, but I love playing poker. I think it's because I can put myself into a role. I've always loved acting and with poker and its need for bluffing and taking risks, it puts me into a different mindset. It's almost like I'm creating a character, a different persona, when I'm at the table. Of all the variations of poker, my favourite is the standard Texas Hold 'Em variety.

#1 - Euchre

Euchre has always held a special place in my heart. My mom's side of the family has always been big into playing Euchre. My grandmother played Euchre online for years and actually met her online friend from her Euchre site way before I ever dreamed of meeting one of my friends I met online. On a sadder note, it's also how we discovered that my great-grandmother was suffering from Alzheimer's as she was playing one night and then announced that she had forgotten how to play.

This is one of the classic trick-taking games and while a lot of people seem to prefer Hearts, I find this one a lot easier to teach and play. I plan on continuing my family tradition and teaching my daughter to play once she's older (3 month olds can't really play cards).
