"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 4 – Nederland - Dust Level: 3 years, 10 months, 3 days - This has been my least favorite TtR map ever since it came out, which is why it got so dusty. The toll mechanic hardly seems worth it just for a few end game points that are overshadowed by the ridiculously high point ticket cards. But I have to admit, the 3P game I played this time felt more satisfying. I've only ever played 2P before and I think that's just the completely wrong player count for this map. Multi-player was much more interesting.

Star Wars: Imperial Assault - Dust Level: 2 years, 11 months, 13 days - Tried a scenario of this with a friend when it first came out and liked it enough to keep it on my wishlist. Got a good deal on the base game from a local trader early last year and I've had it sitting on my Unplayed Shelf ever since then waiting for the app. I definitely like the idea of this being a pure co-op game as I don't typically enjoy All vs One games. Starting going through the training scenario this month just to make sure everything worked. I think i'll dive into this more after I wrap up my First Martians solo campaign.

The Witches: A Discworld Game - Dust Level: 1 year, 9 months, 9 days - My wife is a huge Discworld fan and this is one of her favorites. We usually play it every February around her birthday but didn't around to it last year. We did this time and wound up playing several times before finally not losing to the game's victory condition.

Baseball Highlights: 2045 – Deluxe Edition - Dust Level: 1 year, 7 months, 24 days - This is another of my wife's favorites that she wanted to make sure we got to during her birthday month this year. She stomped me.

Dimension - Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 20 days - Showed this to some friends at the local board game cafe. My wife isn't much of a fan of this one so I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to play it with others.

Tally Ho! - Dust Level: 1 year, 3 months, 16 days - I traded away my physical copy after deciding the game was just too tedious to be very enjoyable. While I think that, I will still play from time to time at Yucata to level up.

Discworld: Ankh-Morpork - Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 24 days - Another February game my wife loves to play in honor of her birthday month. Super glad I picked up my deluxe edition for $5 from a local seller a few years ago because this remains one of the most unique area control games out there.

Lords of Waterdeep - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 3 days - This is my wife's all time favorite game and another one I like to make sure to play with her during her birthday month. My wife is not happy I'm on a winning streak at this one currently.

15+ years in the dust

El Grande has been sitting in my gaming closet unplayed for years. I remember loving this game, so I decided to either play it or trade it.

I ended up playing it twice this month at two different game clubs. Except for the artwork, this classic has aged very well. After all these years, it's still one of the best area control games available. Card play for auctions, the Castille, the dials, and the King - so many great mechanics all woven together seamlessly. A solid "9" that has earned its right to stay in my collection. This puppy is going to get played more often.

Lot's of dusty things here. But I assure everybody that it's a complete coincidence that we played both the GIPF series and Oceania the same weekend both last time and this time. Not to mention that the last time we played some of the Alhambra expansions and Ice Flow was in the same timeframe.

Lewis & Clark - 1 play
First Published 2013
2 years, 10 months, 25 days
Current Rating -  7.2

A very cool racing game with some deck-building and resource management thrown in for good measure.
I'm usually not a fan of deck builders but have no problem with deck building as a mechanism.
Lewis & Clark manages to keep things well mixed and interesting. It can occasionally take a tad too long to play, though.

Blox - 1 play

It took me quite a while to get a copy of this little abstract gem and whenever I get to play it I am reminded that it paid off... A shame it sometimes stays on the shelf for prolonged periods.

I am quite fond of the entire Catan series, but I don't get to play them very often. Even so, I can't quite believe it has been a full decade since my last play of Starfarers! This is one of my favorites in the series, filled with fun elements not found in the other games. I'm terrible at all Catan games, but the encounters make losing a bit more fun than usual.

I've been making an effort this month to try to table some of the games I haven't played in over a year, so lots of 16 month dusty games hit the table! Most of them are games I enjoy playing every year or so, so I will keep in the collection, but this list has flagged up a couple that I maybe should think about putting up for trade.

Australian Rails – Dust Level 17 months

Another crayon rails map hits the list again this month! I quite enjoy this map – it is definitely the map to choose if you want a shorter crayon rails game.

Cro-Magnon – Dust Level 16 months

I despaired of ever getting any party game except Time’s Up to the table, so tried this out with the children instead while they were off at half-term. It worked fairly well, although I obviously won by miles, but the things in it are simple enough for even the youngest, at 8, to know most of them, unlike many games of this type that require more knowledge of the world.

Himalaya – Dust Level 16 months

This game struggles to table for two reasons – one it’s a four player only game, and secondly that most of my current games group don’t know it. Again this time we had two players unfamiliar to it in the game. It’s end-game scoring definitely makes it different from anything else, but there were complaints this time about the luck of the game, as that was more of an issue than usual this game.

No Thanks! – Dust Level 16 months

This older filler used to be very popular but has been replaced by other games, and was completely unfamiliar to one of the players in the group this time. It’s quick to teach and learn though, so I ought to try to get it to the table more often when we’re looking for a filler.

Wizard – Dust Level 16 months

Generally my group prefer to play Rage to this, but it’s a similar feel trick taker, just takes a bit longer, as you play through the entire deck, rather than the fixed 10 rounds of Rage. It’s less “fun” than Rage too, but I still enjoy it for variety from time to time.

Crazy Circus – Dust Level 14 months

This saw quite a lot of play when we first acquired it, but after that first month it’s just sat on the shelf gathering dust. This may be one that should be traded on soon.

Red7 – Dust Level 13 months

This filler has never been popular, and after seeing a few plays when we first go it dropped off the radar, but it came out twice this last month with me, and hit the table at least once without me! I think now a few more people know it it might be chosen as a filler a bit more often, but somehow it’s never been a huge hit.

Maori - 3 years, 7 months, 21 days
I made a list of long dusty games and incorporated it into my Countdown Challenge. When the inevitable "what do you want to play?" question came up, I pulled out the list, someone pulled a couple of games from it out the cabinets and we played this one. Still a fun game.

The Little Prince: Make Me a Planet - 3 years, 4 months, 0 days
I'm not terribly enthused by this game, but it came out and I played it.

Lords of Waterdeep - 1 year, 8 months, 25 days
Better with the expansion, which we didn't have on this occasion. Another game I don't rush out to play but will play from time to time if you want.

Roll Player - 1 year, 5 months, 0 days
Only my second play. I like the theme and it seems to all come together, but I'm not sure how much I actually like it yet. Playing it once every 18 months probably isn't the way to develop that opinion.

Oceanos - 1 year, 2 months, 21 days
Won't miss this if it goes dusty again.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue - 1 year, 2 months, 17 days
I hadn't played this in a while, so I added it to my Countdown Challenge list. Not the first Challenge list I've put it on. I enjoy it, the theme is immersive, but apparently I don't push it very hard unless it's on a challenge list. Well anyway, there's a good chance I'll play it more this year.

My eldest (7) is on a big Zombies kick at the moment, and in particular he loves the videogame Plants vs. Zombies, so I decided to dig this out of my collection of games I used to play at work and give it a try. Needless to say he loved it, though it is certainly as crazy as I remember it. We'll probably play it a few more times in the coming months, but probably not a ton.

Scotland Yard - 3 plays

My eldest had seen adverts for this on TV I think and requested to play it, so while we were visiting family, we got this out and play a few times. We only played the basic version, but I'm sure next time we will beef it up to the full version.

Ticket to Ride - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 0 months, 7 days
My family often play Ticket To Ride when we get together, especially since it is something my mum will join in. We usually play TTR:Europe, so it made a change to play the original USA map instead. The nice thing (for me) was that I won.. which doesn't often happen when playing against my wife and my s.i.l.

I played this with Joe Huber long ago and wasn't too impressed with it. Recently, my son-in-law created a prototype that has an element of pickup and deliver in space, and I thought it was worth showing him this game, so I borrowed Joe's copy and we played a game. It's clever and simple, but not really my thing. However, seeing this game will give my son-in-law more game-history context for his design.

High Society - 1 play

A lot of games have come out recently that include elements from this game. I thought it was high time to play the original game again. It's still enjoyable, though it's quite swingy, at least for players at my skill level.

Africa - 1 play

Joe Huber is crazy about this game. I don't see the appeal because it's so darn tactical. But it's short, and I don't mind indulging him from time to time. "From time to time" for this game amounts to 3 plays in the past 16 years.

I've only managed to play a single game that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.) So here it is...

Money! -- (2 this month; 4 plays 35 months ago) _6⅔_
(both images by darquil)

It's a cute little set collection game. Where one repeatedly trades part of the current collection for things offered either by the game or by other players. Works pretty nicely, too.

The real fun, though, was playing it twice in quick succession: our second game was played much better than the first - a much more dynamic set of potential gambits and responses was demonstrated.

Thanks again to the Lunch@Work folk ('cause they were the ones that played this with me!)

Is it really that long? I could have sworn I was going to play it last year as well, but then again... we actually didn't! Seriously my last play of this was in November 2016 during my "Naughty November" event: This makes it unplayed in 1 year, 2 months, and 20 days!

Thurn und Taxis
Dust Level:5 years & 8 months

Introducing new gamers to the old Spiel des Jahres winner (3 subsequent plays). Well, I wouldn't say the game doesn't show its age at all but it's still fine and definitely more interactive than it was claimed back in the time when it was always compared to Ticket to Ride.

Carcassonne: The City
Dust Level:3 years & 1 month

I'm not sure all the extra rules add enough to the game to justify their existence but still, Klaus-Jürgen Wrede taking clues from Knizia (see the game below) did elevate the game to a somewhat more strategic Carcassonne variant where timing was more important than in any other Wrede-designed Carc spin-offs.

Carcassonne: The Castle
Dust Level:2 years & 6 months

Knizia's Carcassonne is still (one of?) the best, although playing against a kid wasn't as exciting as it could have been against a gamer.

Keltis: Neue Wege, Neue Ziele
Dust Level:2 years & 6 months

Another great Knizia, also my favorite of the family, I'm surprised I hadn't played it for two and a half years.

Carcassonne: Gold Rush
Dust Level:2 years & 4 monhts

And yet another Carcassonne game that collected dust for long - this one focuses more on thwarting others' plans and reducing their possible scores than any other Carc spin-off, but it's not a bad one either.

Cottage Garden
Dust Level:1 year & 4 months

I like Patchwork but I was never amazed by that design, probably because I had already played its Knizian predecessors by the time I met Patchwork. On the other hand I enjoyed my first play of cottage Garden pretty much and it seems I still find it rather enjoyable. Who knows if it's a weaker design than Patchwork or not - what I know is that despite its merits Patchwork was a letdown for me, and Cottage Garden isn't.

Hello, folks!

Not many undusted games this month, but the ones that did are quite good.

Ascension: Deckbuilding Game - 25 plays
First Published 2010
3 years, 5 months, 12 days

Took off like wild fire, as we added some expansions, and went up to get 25 plays just in February!

Agricola - 1 play
First Published 2007
1 year, 5 months, 10 days

I used to play this often with a friend, but he moved out, and now plays of this will happen with much bigger lapses.

Discworld: Ankh-Morpork - 1 play
First Published 2011
1 year, 2 months, 2 days

My fault. Is so easy and quick that I don't play it more often simply because I don't offer it enough.

Regards,

Hi,
only one game out of the dust for us this month.
It was The Builders: Middle Ages.
I think we hadn't played it over the past two years
A nice game, it seems my wife was interested in it.
We had good sensations and we played it twice.
A nice rediscovery
THanks for reading

Animals on Board - 1 play
1 year, 7 months, 3 days
Current Rating -  6

Letter Tycoon - 1 play
1 year, 0 months, 13 days
Current Rating -  7

Two games that were both taught at a gateway-game night as they're good entry-level fare. Animals on Board I got to fill the somewhat minor niche of I-split-you-choose mechanic in my collection and it works well in that regard, along with the set collection (but not pairs) aspect. My son used to go a bit berserk over the 'arks', so it got negatively associated and (unfairly) shelved.

Letter Tycoon is a word game (shock!) which needs one small tweak to make it shine: keeping the central pool of letters for the whole round (and displaying next round's three letters) stops the game grinding to a halt whenever Player A uses a pool letter which necessitates Player B rethinking their word. The powers and patents are fun, allowing for 10+ letter words, which is rare in a build-by-the-letters word game. I think this is less gamer-y than Hardback, but both are fun.

Not much Dust last month. Feb saw me play 19 different games with a total of 28 plays and just one dusty title.

Steam - 1 play
First Published 2009

Current Rating -  6

I enjoy this one since it has streamlined some of the brutalness in Age of Steam and those initial auctions. The scars run deep from that. I don't play a lot of pick up and deliver games, but will play when asked with this one.

Because of its compact factor, this game is in my travel box, which means that I only play it when I travel for more than a couple days with my wife. It's a great game, but I have yet to beat my wife! It put some fight during the first play but for the second I got trounced again.

Viceroy - 1 play
First Published 2014
2 years, 6 months, 23 days

This play was prompted by the aborted KS campaign for the expansion to see if I liked it. I did and would play more if my game group wanted.

Murano - 1 play
First Published 2014
2 years, 3 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  7

This was requested by a friend to bring to a con. So we played (on another copy that was there) and I am undecided if I will crack the shrink on mine or not.
