The 11th Annual IndyCon has come and gone. It was different this year - as it was the first time in the last 10 years that I didn't do a lot of work before the convention and just ran the three tournaments at the con. Thank you to everyone that pitched in and helped this year! Especially thank you to Dave, Tami, Brian, and Jeremy who did a whole lot! The play to win was great, the venue was great, and the gaming was great! A big thanks to Man Vs Meeple and Family Time Games as the main sponsors of the event!

Every year I got into IndyCon with the goal of playing as many games as I can with lots of different people. When I got to Geekway I tend to play with the same group of my "St. Louis" buddies. When I go to Gen Con it tends to be my wife and our friends who we play with almost weekly, but IndyCon is a time to play with all kinds of people! Here is a nice image of my stats from the weekend. I got to play at least one game with 38 different people which was awesome!

I convinced my wife and Annie to start the convention off with Rising Sun! They'd never played before and were joined by Rising Sun newb Brian C in learning. Cameron also joined us and we began after the rules explanation. We played with a few of the Kickstarter monsters and the horse season cards. I tried to get a lot of strongholds, I was able to do so, but despite making a solid come back, Brian who jumped to an early lead won two key battles and scored 16 points for those. Cameron had grabbed the Oni of Spite at one point and had the kami that lets double movement occur - so I locked him down with another kami to limit the the damage it would do. I don't think the girls were a big fan of this one - which makes me a bit sad - because Krista at least really does like Blood Rage quite a bit. If you asked me what the Top 4 "Hot Games" of IndyCon were - Rising Sun would be one. It was played a lot. I'd also throw Terraforming Mars, Azul, and Anachrony in there.

My next scheduled game of the con was Anachrony! I'd just finished making the insert this week and so was glad to use it. I was joined by Dave and Jeff (who I've played Railways of the World with several times at IndyCon) and Cameron. Early on I focused on getting a lot of water - getting the 1/2 water cost building - which gave me flexibility to do other things later. I really then focused on getting goals and scored 4 of the 5 goals. Despite then scoring the least amount for exiting the planet, I still was able to sneak out a win. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the game!

The first "new to me" game of the con for me. Brian and Steve had got in from St. Louis and so we quickly got this one to the table before dinner. I focused on towers and a huge forest which worked out for me. I liked the game, but I like the charm of Kingdomino more. This one feels a bit more than I want it to be.

My absolute favorite part of IndyCon every year is the Tichu tournament. Each year we do three tournaments with Ticket to Ride and Crokinole being the others. The other two seem to have less people every year, but Tichu regularly puts together 8 teams easily. Now for the past two years my wife has won the tournament and she hasn't let me forget it all year. This year Logan and I came back with a vengeance! First up was Steve and Brian. We went 1-2 and called Tichu to start. Three hands later it was over. After that was Annie and Krista where on one hand I called Tichu, Annie & Krista had two bombs, and somehow we still won the trick! Finally, we were up against Tom and Joe. Joe had just learned that night and picked it up quickly - but I had about 5 bombs throughout the game and Logan and I are now back on top!

Deborah organized a big game of this - which helped make up for Patrick and Julia not being there. This was my first time playing it. I'm not sure what to think about it. It is for sure a different type of social deduction game. I'd play it again - though I'd prefer Mafia or the Resistance. We played with a lot of people on this one and it was cool to talk to Joe some more after Tichu as well as Scott who I see each year at IndyCon. I completely forgot to take any pictures of this one.

Saturday morning then came around and our scheduled game of Quebec happened after I played my Crokinole match against Dave. I appreciated everyone waiting for me! Steph used to come over to our house for game day, however we haven't gamed together for at least 5 years, so this year we made sure it happened! Quebec really is a hidden gem of a euro game. Jerry jumped out to a big lead thanks to the cascading, but Krista came roaring back and scored 8 points for the largest group which was our end game goal. I made a couple really boneheaded plays in the last century taking me out of the running. It was cool to play a game with Steph again and hopefully it won't be that long again before we play another!

Since Dave's cheap board started bubbling this year he asked me to bring my board "The Quest" by the Helinski Brothers. I played a warm up game against Brian M on Friday night - but started out against Dave K on Saturday morning in the tournament. I got 4 gophers in a single round that one which took me to victory. Up next was Barry - who often competes in this tournament - but I got the win. Now I started thinking I had a chance to make the finals for the first time ever! David W was up next, we'd seen each other at Firebird's for dinner and made sure we'd play when I got back. I was able to win! For the first time ever I made the finals! Here I was against two time champion Jerry Wilkinson facing me down. Our game started out with him getting 30 points. I then scored 10. He then scored 25. I then scored 45! We had a draw in there somewhere. Then it was 65 to 65 and I made some vital errors and Jerry got the win for his third time!

Brian S (Yeah there is a ton of Brian's at IndyCon!) saw me eyeing Tyrants in the play to win. He was reading the rules and so we put our heads together and figured it out. Troy joined us about two turns in. I ran away this one - which might have helped with my enjoyment - but I really liked this one! I thought it was better than Clank! just because of the area control portion of the game. The cards and board is pretty ugly however. Both Brian and I ended up wining a copy from the play to win so I'll get a chance to play it more!

I didn't play in the Ticket to Ride tourney - just organized it - but here is a cool picture! Congrats to Barry on the win. I talked him into being our 16th player and it worked out! Oh yeah, we played on Saturday instead of Friday because we only had a single copy of Ticket to Ride at the con. The next day there were at least 10 floating around. Three of the 10th Anniversary editions.

Chris Hahn came looking for me to teach - I said I'd play. We all knew going in that I'd probably win, because of all my real life fishing skills. After a quick rules refresher for myself and patience from the learners. I think everyone liked it. This is my fourth or fifth time playing it and I really do enjoy it. More than Raiders of the North Sea which everyone seems to compare it to these days.

Krista and Annie love this game. They taught me it right around the raffle. We knew we would likely not finish and we didn't. Only getting in 6 of the 7 rounds. I really enjoyed this one. It is a deep and thinky game. I'm glad Annie is going to back it on Kickstarter when TMG releases it.

We had to finish because we were going to Firebird's which is in the hotel parking lot. Those were some excellent burgers and having some great time with friends!

Didn't play this one, but thought I'd mention the games we acquired. Krista won this one in the raffle. I'm excited to try it as it was on my most anticipated games from 2017 list. I mentioned I won a copy of Tyrants of the Underdark, but we also won a play to win of Fabled Fruit. Then in the math trade I picked up Grifters, a version of Coup, and Power Grid: The Card Game. So a good haul overall!

When playing Coldwater Crown earlier I had asked Brad if he wanted to play Millennium Blades - we'd talked about it online before - and he and Amanda said yes! We made plans to play at 9pm that night. I played the introductory version of the game - which really is the best way to teach someone. While they looked overwhelmed before the game began at the end they seemed to have a good time, despite not really being CCG players. I was able to get the win thanks to a perfect collection in the last round and winning the last tournament, even though I did very poor in the first two tournaments. It was cool playing a couple games with Amanda and Brad. If you haven't heard their podcast Board Games with Panda you should check it out!

Sunday morning rolled around. While Krista and Annie played the Dilluvia Project I wrangled up Brian S, Kevin, and Barry to learn this one. A quick rules read, some referencing later, and we were off! Barry jumped out to an early lead and Brian was trailing quite a bit behind. Brian came roaring back though, but in the end Barry denied us. I almost bought this at Gen Con last year, however I'm not I'm glad I didn't. It felt very chaotic and I felt that since i had to go first in the last round there just wasn't going to be a way for me to win. I'd play it again, the theme is cool, but it didn't jump out to me. I'm also pretty sure Barry was mimicking being sick here...

Railroad Tycooon was the very first game I ever played at IndyCon 11 years ago. I played with the same copy again on Sunday, just this time on the Europe map. I decided to grab Vienna hotel as my first action, because I had the Baron that connected Vienna to St. Pete. However, Dave N (Yeah, we got a bunch of Dave's too) went to Moscow early cutting me off to my ideal routes. Jason did very well and got a couple service bounties while at the same time taking the least amount of stocks.

As RRT finished up I saw Troy and another fellow setting up this one. Jason, Kevin, and I jumped in. Chris was that other fellow and he was a really nice guy. It was his second IndyCon and despite having the Meeple Realty insert this was his first time playing Scythe. I was going to try and get a lot of encounters, but it didn't work out so well for me. I did start to spread out though and then was slammed by Troy in battle. This game had the most battles I've ever seen in Scythe. In the end Chris was able to get his 6th star and was also in the 2nd level of popularity which earned him the victory. That ended my IndyCon 2018 - which was a great way to end it. Thanks to everyone who played with me, who helped organize, and especially to my parents for watching the kids so Krista and I could game for 3 straight days!
