Dave, Eric and I set out for ConnCon... and then spent the next two hours and twenty minutes traveling a paltry 6 miles. A huge accident had shut down 91 making a rather inauspicious start to our con experience. We later learned that Al had left later than us, avoided 91, and arrived sooner than us.

Props to Dave. He was kind enough to drive in the first place, and a traffic jam wasn't much of a reward for his generosity.

Despite arriving late to the con, I was still able to jump into my game that had been scheduled to begin 15 minutes before we got to the hotel. They were still in the early teaching phase luckily.

I've wanted to try this game for a while, but I don't get to play two player games that often, I don't have access to a copy and it's a bit pricey to buy without trying first. So I was happy to sign up for a teaching game of this.

I really enjoyed this and am wondering if I should consider getting this and the expansion (which allows for a third player).

Ron, Ted, Dave and I had all ended up scheduled in this teaching slot. Unfortunately there weren't enough copies. Ron graciously stepped out and allowed someone else to take his spot.

I didn't really know much about this game other than it was designed by Vladimír Suchý, but that was enough that I really wanted to try it. I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed this one. Another one I'm considering buying.

I always try to get games in with Maciek. He's a lot of fun and he always brings obscure games that I've never heard of but that are overlooked gems. So I sat down to play "Eine Frage der Ähre", which apparently has been redone in English as Heartland, and true to form this game was a lot of fun... and proved that Michelle and I can never be friends.

Al and Eric were looking for something light and quick so I taught Sagrada and then called it a day. Eric managed to win without ever using any of his glass tokens. He also demonstrated how to play the game expertly... which is to have dice randomly come up in the color/number combiation you need.

I'd heard that this game was good for a while now and really wanted to try it. I ended up playing it twice in a row. I enjoyed it a lot. Big thanks to Ai who taught, and also talked through her strategy, and proved that this can be a very, very deep game (as she wiped the table with us newbs).

Ron suggested this game, so Chris and I sat down to play with him. This is not a game I would have looked at twice due to the theme (I blame you Killer Bunnies), but it was actually very good. The art is great and I love that someone made a good game out of a bunny theme. I love drafting games, but am not at all good at them.

Maciek brought out this game, which was another one I've never heard of. I'm not usually one for visual perception games (if you've played a game with me facing the wrong side of a board you know my brain just doesn't work that way) or speed games, but this one was actually a lot of fun. I don't know that I'd seek it out, but I'd be happy to play it.

My next scheduled game was Montana and I was pleasantly surprised to see I was playing with George. Montana was a game that was on my radar, but I couldn't have told you why. It's another race game, which isn't my thing, but it's based on resource collection/worker placement, which was interesting. Ultimately this just didn't click with me. I'd play it again, but I wouldn't suggest it.

Maciek pulled out this game, which apparently isn't available in English. It's a trick taking game based on Pillars of the Earth. It's got a really neat twist where cards are randomly dealt out and other people might have your color cards and get to decide when to play your winning tricks. Amusingly I played the game and only saw a green card (my color) once during the entire game, on the last round, and it was the lowest card in my suit. I love trick taking games with interesting twists and I really enjoyed this game.

I had expected this to be a quick game, but instead ended up not getting to bed until after two. The funniest moment of the con for me was when Justin realized that Michelle's earlier advice to produce stone instead of sand meant he lost two points and the game. His riff on her completely cracked me up.

Ted was looking for a short game so we roped Dave into this quick filler. Ted and I decided to play a "friendly" game where we helped each other out by making sure each other's preferred train lines covered as much ground (and as few cities) as possible. It was deliciously nasty. Dave creamed us.

Murano had been on my radar for a long time, mostly because I was intrigued by the interesting action selection mechanism where you move boats to choose your actions. So Dave, Eric, Ted and I tried this.

This is probably the game of the con that most disappointed me. The action selection mechanism was interesting, but the rest of the game never came together. The game, which ostensibly is about making glass is really all about getting money. Once you have money you can find a way to make points. Unfortunately I never felt like I was doing anything except trying to make money.

I went into a shop-heavy strategy at the start thinking shops and selling to customers was a way to make money. Not only is it not, because there are never any customers, but not one person in the game ever sold to customers.

I'm glad to have played, just to see the action selection, and to have crossed it off my interest list.

This is a game that you could do a deep dive into if you really wanted to think through all the strategy.

Ron had won this in the play to win contest and suggested playing. So he, I and Dave tried this.

It's a game where using workers ties them up for a while depending on how far out you commit your workers. It's also got a "strength" element where workers can reach higher rows if they get strong, or alternatively if they work together. I'm a sucker for interesting game mechanisms and enjoyed the game just for that reason.
